In the present work, we examine the potential robustness of extreme wave events associated with large amplitude fluctuations of the Peregrine soliton type, upon departure from the integrable analogue of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation, namely the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) model. Our model of choice will be the so-called Salerno model, which interpolates between the AL and the DNLS models. We find that rogue wave events essentially are drastically distorted even for very slight perturbations of the homotopic parameter connecting the two models off of the integrable limit. Our results suggest that the Peregrine soliton structure is a rather sensitive feature of the integrable limit, which may not persist under generic perturbations of the limiting integrable case.

We investigate the generation and propagation of solitary waves in the context of the Hertz chain and Toda lattice, with the aim to highlight the similarities, as well as differences between these systems. We begin by discussing the kinetic and poten tial energy of a solitary wave in these systems, and show that under certain circumstances the kinetic and potential energy profiles in these systems (i.e., their spatial distribution) look reasonably close to each other. While this and other features, such as the connection between the amplitude and the total energy of the wave bear similarities between the two models, there are also notable differences, such as the width of the wave. We then study the dynamical behavior of these systems in response to an initial velocity impulse. For the Toda lattice, we do so by employing the inverse scattering transform, and we obtain analytically the ratio between the energy of the resulting solitary wave and the energy of the impulse, as a function of the impulse velocity; we then compare the dynamics of the Toda system to that of the Hertz system, for which the corresponding quantities are obtained through numerical simulations. In the latter system, we obtain a universality in the fraction of the energy stored in the resulting solitary traveling wave irrespectively of the size of the impulse. This fraction turns out to only depend on the nonlinear exponent. Finally, we investigate the relation between the velocity of the resulting solitary wave and the velocity of the impulse. In particular, we provide an alternative proof for the numerical scaling rule of Hertz type systems.
We report on the experimental study of an optically driven multimode semiconductor laser with 1~m cavity length. We observed a spatiotemporal regime where real time measurements reveal very high intensity peaks in the laser field. Such a regime, whic h coexists with the locked state and with stable phase solitons, is characterized by the emergence of extreme events which produce a heavy tail statistics in the probability density function. We interpret the extreme events as collisions of spatiotemporal structures with opposite chirality. Numerical simulations of the semiconductor laser model, showing very similar dynamical behavior, substantiate our evidences and corroborate the description of such interactions as collisions between phase solitons and transient structures with different phase rotations.

We study experimentally, in a large-scale basin, the propagation of unidirectional deep water gravity waves stochastically modulated in phase. We observe the emergence of nonlinear localized structures that evolve on a stochastic wave background. Suc h a coexistence is expected by the integrable turbulence theory for the nonlinear Schr{o}dinger equation (NLSE), and we report the first experimental observation in the context of hydrodynamic waves. We characterize the formation, the properties and the dynamics of these nonlinear coherent structures (solitons and extreme events) within the incoherent wave background. The extreme events result from the strong steepening of wave train fronts, and their emergence occurs after roughly one nonlinear length scale of propagation (estimated from NLSE). Solitons arise when nonlinearity and dispersion are weak, and of the same order of magnitude as expected from NLSE. We characterize the statistical properties of this state. The number of solitons and extreme events is found to increase all along the propagation, the wave-field distribution has a heavy tail, and the surface elevation spectrum is found to scale as a frequency power-law with an exponent --4.5 $pm$ 0.5. Most of these observations are compatible with the integrable turbulence theory for NLSE although some deviations (e.g. power-law spectrum, asymmetrical extreme events) result from effects proper to hydrodynamic waves.
We perform a numerical study of the initial-boundary value problem, with vanishing boundary conditions, of a driven nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) with linear damping and a Gaussian driver. We identify Peregrine-like rogue waveforms, excited by two different types of vanishing initial data decaying at an algebraic or exponential rate. The observed extreme events emerge on top of a decaying support. Depending on the spatial/temporal scales of the driver, the transient dynamics -- prior to the eventual decay of the solutions -- may resemble the one in the semiclassical limit of the integrable NLS, or may, e.g., lead to large-amplitude breather-like patterns. The effects of the damping strength and driving amplitude, in suppressing or enhancing respectively the relevant features, as well as of the phase of the driver in the construction of a diverse array of spatiotemporal patterns, are numerically analyzed.

Based on the notion of Darboux-KP chain hierarchy and its invariant submanifolds we construct some class of constraints compatible with integrable lattices. Some simple examples are given.
