The detection of landmarks or patterns is of interest for extracting features in biological images. Hence, algorithms for finding these keypoints have been extensively investigated in the literature, and their localization and detection properties are well known. In this paper, we study the complementary topic of local orientation estimation, which has not received similar attention. Simply stated, the problem that we address is the following: estimate the angle of rotation of a pattern with steerable filters centered at the same location, where the image is corrupted by colored isotropic Gaussian noise. For this problem, we use a statistical framework based on the Cram{e}r-Rao lower bound (CRLB) that sets a fundamental limit on the accuracy of the corresponding class of estimators. We propose a scheme to measure the performance of estimators based on steerable filters (as a lower bound), while considering the connection to maximum likelihood estimation. Beyond the general results, we analyze the asymptotic behaviour of the lower bound in terms of the order of steerablility and propose an optimal subset of components that minimizes the bound. We define a mechanism for selecting optimal subspaces of the span of the detectors. These are characterized by the most relevant angular frequencies. Finally, we project our template to a basis of steerable functions and experimentally show that the prediction accuracy achieves the predicted CRLB. As an extension, we also consider steerable wavelet detectors.

We provide a complete pipeline for the detection of patterns of interest in an image. In our approach, the patterns are assumed to be adequately modeled by a known template, and are located at unknown positions and orientations that we aim at retriev ing. We propose a continuous-domain additive image model, where the analyzed image is the sum of the patterns to localize and a background with self-similar isotropic power-spectrum. We are then able to compute the optimal filter fulfilling the SNR criterion based on one single template and background pair: it strongly responds to the template while being optimally decoupled from the background model. In addition, we constrain our filter to be steerable, which allows for a fast template detection together with orientation estimation. In practice, the implementation requires to discretize a continuous-domain formulation on polar grids, which is performed using quadratic radial B-splines. We demonstrate the practical usefulness of our method on a variety of template approximation and pattern detection experiments. We show that the detection performance drastically improves when we exploit the statistics of the background via its power-spectrum decay, which we refer to as spectral-shaping. The proposed scheme outperforms state-of-the-art steerable methods by up to 50% of absolute detection performance.
Recently, a new class of so-called emph{hierarchical thresholding algorithms} was introduced to optimally exploit the sparsity structure in joint user activity and channel detection problems. In this paper, we take a closer look at the user detection performance of such algorithms under noise and relate its performance to the classical block correlation detector with orthogonal signatures. More specifically, we derive a lower bound for the diversity order which, under suitable choice of the signatures, equals that of the block correlation detector. Surprisingly, in specific parameter settings non-orthogonal pilots, i.e. pilots where (cyclically) shift
This paper presents an analysis of target localization accuracy, attainable by the use of MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) radar systems, configured with multiple transmit and receive sensors, widely distributed over a given area. The Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for target localization accuracy is developed for both coherent and non-coherent processing. Coherent processing requires a common phase reference for all transmit and receive sensors. The CRLB is shown to be inversely proportional to the signal effective bandwidth in the non-coherent case, but is approximately inversely proportional to the carrier frequency in the coherent case. We further prove that optimization over the sensors positions lowers the CRLB by a factor equal to the product of the number of transmitting and receiving sensors. The best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) is derived for the MIMO target localization problem. The BLUEs utility is in providing a closed form localization estimate that facilitates the analysis of the relations between sensors locations, target location, and localization accuracy. Geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) contours are used to map the relative performance accuracy for a given layout of radars over a given geographic area.

In cognitive radio systems, one of the main requirements is to detect the presence of the primary users transmission, especially in weak signal cases. Cyclostationary detection is always used to solve weak signal detection, however, the computational complexity prevents it from wide usage. In this paper, a fast cycle frequency domain feature detection algorithm has been proposed, in which only feature frequency with significant cyclic signature is considered for a certain modulation mode. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has remarkable performance gain than energy detection when supporting real-time detection with low computational complexity.
With the increasing development of Internet of Things (IoT), the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) wireless network is required to support grant-free random access of a massive number of sporadic traffic devices. In particular, at the beginning of each time slot, the base station (BS) performs joint activity detection and channel estimation (JADCE) based on the received pilot sequences sent from active devices. Due to the deployment of a large-scale antenna array and the existence of a massive number of IoT devices, conventional JADCE approaches usually have high computational complexity and need long pilot sequences. To solve these challenges, this paper proposes a novel deep learning framework for JADCE in 6G wireless networks, which contains a dimension reduction module, a deep learning network module, an active device detection module, and a channel estimation module. Then, prior-feature learning followed by an adaptive-tuning strategy is proposed, where an inner network composed of the Expectation-maximization (EM) and back-propagation is introduced to jointly tune the precision and learn the distribution parameters of the device state matrix. Finally, by designing the inner layer-by-layer and outer layer-by-layer training method, a feature-aided adaptive-tuning deep learning network is built. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results confirm that the proposed deep learning framework has low computational complexity and needs short pilot sequences in practical scenarios.
