We investigated magnetic and thermodynamic properties of $S$ = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuMoO$_4$(OH) through single crystalline magnetization and heat capacity measurements. At zero field, it behaves as a uniform $S$ = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with $J$ = 238 K, and exhibits a canted antiferromagnetism below $T_mathrm{N}$ = 1.52 K. In addition, a magnetic field $H$ induces the anisotropy in magnetization and opens a gap in the spin excitation spectrum. These properties are understood in terms of an effective staggered field induced by staggered g-tensors and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. Temperature-dependencies of the heat capacity and their field variations are consistent with those expected for quantum sine-Gordon model, indicating that spin excitations consist of soliton, anti-soliton and breather modes. From field-dependencies of the soliton mass, the staggered field normalized by the uniform field $c_mathrm{s}$ is estimated as 0.041, 0.174, and 0.030, for $H parallel a$, $b$, and $c$, respectively. Such a large variation of $c_mathrm{s}$ is understood as the combination of staggered g-tensors and DM interactions which induce the staggered field in the opposite direction for $H parallel a$ and $c$ but almost the same direction for $H parallel b$ at each Cu site.

Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements in magnetic fields were performed on an $S=1/2$ one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuGaF$_6$. Exchange interaction was evaluated as $J/k_{rm B}simeq 100$ K. However, no magnetic ordering was observ ed down to 0.46 K. It was found that an applied magnetic field induces a staggered magnetic susceptibility obeying the Curie law and an excitation gap, both of which should be attributed to the antisymmetric interaction of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya type and/or the staggered $g$-tensor. With increasing magnetic field $H$, the gap increases almost in proportion to $H^{2/3}$.
BaCo2V2O8 is a nice example of a quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin system that can be described in terms of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid physics. This is explored in the present study where the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram is thoroughly est ablished up to 12 T using single-crystal neutron diffraction. The transition from the Neel phase to the incommensurate longitudinal spin density wave (LSDW) phase through a first-order transition, as well as the critical exponents associated with the paramagnetic to ordered phase transitions, and the magnetic order both in the Neel and in the LSDW phase are determined, thus providing a stringent test for the theory.
We report on NMR studies of the quasi one--dimensional (1D) antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ chain cuprate LiCuVO$_4$ in magnetic fields $H$ up to $mu_0H$ = 30 T ($approx 70$% of the saturation field $H_{rm sat}$). NMR spectra in fields higher than $H_{rm c 2}$ ($mu_0H_{rm c2} approx 7.5$ T) and temperatures $T<T_{rm N}$ can be described within the model of a spin-modulated phase in which the magnetic moments are aligned parallel to the applied field $H$ and their values alternate sinusoidally along the magnetic chains. Based on theoretical concepts about magnetically frustrated 1D chains, the field dependence of the modulation strength of the magnetic structure is deduced from our experiments. Relaxation time $T_2$ measurements of the $^{51}$V nuclei show that $T_2$ depends on the particular position of the probing $^{51}$V nucleus with respect to the magnetic copper moments within the 1D chains: the largest $T_2$ value is observed for the vanadium nuclei which are very next to the magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ion with largest ordered magnetic moment. This observation is in agreement with the expectation for the spin-modulated magnetic structure. The $(H,T)$ magnetic phase diagram of LiCuVO$_4$ is discussed.
Confinement is a process by which particles with fractional quantum numbers bind together to form quasiparticles with integer quantum numbers. The constituent particles are confined by an attractive interaction whose strength increases with increasin g particle separation and as a consequence, individual particles are not found in isolation. This phenomenon is well known in particle physics where quarks are confined in baryons and mesons. An analogous phenomenon occurs in certain magnetic insulators; weakly coupled chains of spins S=1/2. The collective excitations in these systems is spinons (S=1/2). At low temperatures weak coupling between chains can induce an attractive interaction between pairs of spinons that increases with their separation and thus leads to confinement. In this paper, we employ inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the spinon confinement in the quasi-1D S=1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8. Spinon excitations are observed above TN in quantitative agreement with established theory. Below TN the pairs of spinons are confined and two sequences of meson-like bound states with longitudinal and transverse polarizations are observed. Several theoretical approaches are used to explain the data. A new theoretical technique based on Tangent-space Matrix Product States gives a very complete description of the data and provides good agreement not only with the energies of the bound modes but also with their intensities. We also successfully explained the effect of temperature on the excitations including the experimentally observed thermally induced resonance between longitudinal modes below TN ,and the transitions between thermally excited spinon states above TN. In summary, our work establishes SrCo2V2O8 as a beautiful paradigm for spinon confinement in a quasi-1D quantum magnet and provides a comprehensive picture of this process.
We study an incommensurate long-range order induced by an external magnetic field in a quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating spin system, F5PNN, focusing on the role of the frustrating interaction which can be enhanced by a high-pressure effect. On the basis of the density matrix renormalization group analysis of a microscopic model for F5PNN, we present several H-T phase diagrams for typical parameters of the frustrating next-nearest-neighbour coupling and the interchain interaction, and then discuss how the field-induced incommensurate order develops by the frustration effect in such phase diagrams. A magnetization plateau at half the saturation moment is also mentioned.
