We introduce the family of $k$-gap-planar graphs for $k geq 0$, i.e., graphs that have a drawing in which each crossing is assigned to one of the two involved edges and each edge is assigned at most $k$ of its crossings. This definition is motivated by applications in edge casing, as a $k$-gap-planar graph can be drawn crossing-free after introducing at most $k$ local gaps per edge. We present results on the maximum density of $k$-gap-planar graphs, their relationship to other classes of beyond-planar graphs, characterization of $k$-gap-planar complete graphs, and the computational complexity of recognizing $k$-gap-planar graphs.

We prove that the spectral gap of a finite planar graph $X$ is bounded by $lambda_1(X)le C(frac{log(diam X)}{diam X})^2$ where $C$ depends only on the degree of $X$. We then give a sequence of such graphs showing the the above estimate cannot be impr oved. This yields a negative answer to a question of Benjamini and Curien on the mixing times of the simple random walk on planar graphs.
We initiate the study of the following problem: Given a non-planar graph G and a planar subgraph S of G, does there exist a straight-line drawing {Gamma} of G in the plane such that the edges of S are not crossed in {Gamma} by any edge of G? We give positive and negative results for different kinds of connected spanning subgraphs S of G. Moreover, in order to enlarge the subset of instances that admit a solution, we consider the possibility of bending the edges of G not in S; in this setting we discuss different trade-offs between the number of bends and the required drawing area.
Graph drawing addresses the problem of finding a layout of a graph that satisfies given aesthetic and understandability objectives. The most important objective in graph drawing is minimization of the number of crossings in the drawing, as the aesthe tics and readability of graph drawings depend on the number of edge crossings. VLSI layouts with fewer crossings are more easily realizable and consequently cheaper. A straight-line drawing of a planar graph G of n vertices is a drawing of G such that each edge is drawn as a straight-line segment without edge crossings. However, a problem with current graph layout methods which are capable of producing satisfactory results for a wide range of graphs is that they often put an extremely high demand on computational resources. This paper introduces a new layout method, which nicely draws internally convex of planar graph that consumes only little computational resources and does not need any heavy duty preprocessing. Here, we use two methods: The first is self organizing map known from unsupervised neural networks which is known as (SOM) and the second method is Inverse Self Organized Map (ISOM).
For a fixed virtual scene (=collection of simplices) S and given observer position p, how many elements of S are weakly visible (i.e. not fully occluded by others) from p? The present work explores the trade-off between query time and preprocessing s pace for these quantities in 2D: exactly, in the approximate deterministic, and in the probabilistic sense. We deduce the EXISTENCE of an O(m^2/n^2) space data structure for S that, given p and time O(log n), allows to approximate the ratio of occluded segments up to arbitrary constant absolute error; here m denotes the size of the Visibility Graph--which may be quadratic, but typically is just linear in the size n of the scene S. On the other hand, we present a data structure CONSTRUCTIBLE in O(n*log(n)+m^2*polylog(n)/k) preprocessing time and space with similar approximation properties and query time O(k*polylog n), where k<n is an arbitrary parameter. We describe an implementation of this approach and demonstrate the practical benefit of the parameter k to trade memory for query time in an empirical evaluation on three classes of benchmark scenes.
We present self-adjusting data structures for answering point location queries in convex and connected subdivisions. Let $n$ be the number of vertices in a convex or connected subdivision. Our structures use $O(n)$ space. For any convex subdivision $ S$, our method processes any online query sequence $sigma$ in $O(mathrm{OPT} + n)$ time, where $mathrm{OPT}$ is the minimum time required by any linear decision tree for answering point location queries in $S$ to process $sigma$. For connected subdivisions, the processing time is $O(mathrm{OPT} + n + |sigma|log(log^* n))$. In both cases, the time bound includes the $O(n)$ preprocessing time.
