Recently, there has been a renewed interest in the quantification of coherence or other coherence-like concepts within the framework of quantum resource theory. However, rigorously defined or not, the notion of coherence or decoherence has already been used by the community for decades since the advent of quantum theory. Intuitively, the definitions of coherence and decoherence should be the two sides of the same coin. Therefore, a natural question is raised: how can the conventional decoherence processes, such as the von Neumann-L{u}ders (projective) measurement postulation or partially dephasing channels, fit into the bigger picture of the recently established theoretic framework? Here we show that the state collapse rules of the von Neumann or L{u}ders-type measurements, as special cases of genuinely incoherent operations (GIO), are consistent with the resource theories of quantum coherence. New hierarchical measures of coherence are proposed for the L{u}ders-type measurement and their relationship with measurement-dependent discord is addressed. Moreover, utilizing the fixed point theory for $C^ast$-algebra, we prove that GIO indeed represent a particular type of partially dephasing (phase-damping) channels which have a matrix representation based on the Schur product. By virtue of the Stinesprings dilation theorem, the physical realizations of incoherent operations are investigated in detail and we find that GIO in fact constitute the core of strictly incoherent operations (SIO) and generally incoherent operations (IO) and the unspeakable notion of coherence induced by GIO can be transferred to the theories of speakable coherence by the corresponding permutation or relabeling operators.

An idea for an application of the quantum annealing mechanism to construct a projection measurement in a collective space is proposed. We use the annealing mechanism to drive the pointer degree of freedom associated with the measurement process. The parameters in its problem Hamiltonian is given not as classical variables but as quantum variables (states). By additionally introducing successive short interactions so that the back reaction to the quantum state (to be measured) can be controlled, we invent a quantum mechanically parametrized quantum annealing process. Applying to a particular problem of discrimination of two collective states , we find that the process by the quantum mechanically parametrized annealing arrives at projection measurement in the collective space when the parametrizing quantum variables themselves are orthogonal (or distinguishable).
Quantum devices are systems that can explore quantum phenomena, like entanglement or coherence, for example, to provide some enhancement performance concerning their classical counterparts. In particular, quantum batteries are devices that use entang lement as main element in its high performance in the charging powerful. In this paper, we explore the quantum battery performance and its relationship with the amount of entanglement that arises during the charging process. By using a general approach to a two and three-cell battery, our results suggest that entanglement is not the main resource to quantum batteries, where there is a non-trivial correlation-coherence trade-off as resource for the high efficiency of such quantum devices.
A multi-slit interference experiment, with which-way detectors, in the presence of environment induced decoherence, is theoretically analyzed. The effect of environment is modeled via a coupling to a bath of harmonic oscillators. Through an exact ana lysis, an expression for $mathcal{C}$, a recently introduced measure of coherence, of the particle at the detecting screen is obtained as a function of the parameters of the environment. It is argued that the effect of decoherence can be quantified using the measured coherence value which lies between zero and one. For the specific case of two slits, it is shown that the decoherence time can be obtained from the measured value of the coherence, $mathcal{C}$, thus providing a novel way to quantify the effect of decoherence via direct measurement of quantum coherence. This would be of significant value in many current studies that seek to exploit quantum superpositions for quantum information applications and scalable quantum computation.
A measurement is deemed successful, if one can maximize the information gain by the measurement apparatus. Here, we ask if quantum coherence of the system imposes a limitation on the information gain during quantum measurement. First, we argue that t he information gain in a quantum measurement is nothing but the coherent information or the distinct quantum information that one can send from the system to apparatus. We prove that the maximum information gain from a pure state, using a mixed apparatus is upper bounded by the initial coherence of the system. Further, we illustrate the measurement scenario in the presence of environment. We argue that the information gain is upper bounded by the entropy exchange between the system and the apparatus. Also, to maximize the information gain, both the initial coherence of the apparatus, and the final entanglement between the system and apparatus should be maximum. Moreover, we find that for a fixed amount of coherence in the final apparatus state the more robust apparatus is, the more will be the information gain.
The recent advances in the study of thermodynamics of microscopic processes have driven the search for new developments in energy converters utilizing quantum effects. We here propose a universal framework to describe the thermodynamics of a quantum engine fueled by quantum projective measurements. Standard quantum thermal machines operating in a finite-time regime with a driven Hamiltonian that does not commute in different times have the performance decreased by the presence of coherence, which is associated with a larger entropy production and irreversibility degree. However, we show that replacing the standard hot thermal reservoir by a projective measurement operation with general basis in the Bloch sphere and controlling the basis angles suitably could improve the performance of the quantum engine as well as decrease the entropy change during the measurement process. Our results go in direction of a generalization of quantum thermal machine models where the fuel comes from general sources beyond the standard thermal reservoir.
