We study gapless quantum spin chains with spin 1/2 and 1: the Fredkin and Motzkin models. Their entangled groundstates are known exactly but not their excitation spectra. We first express the groundstates in the continuum which allows for the calculation of spin and entanglement properties in a unified fashion. Doing so, we uncover an emergent conformal-type symmetry, thus consolidating the connection to a widely studied family of Lifshitz quantum critical points in 2d. We then obtain the low lying excited states via large-scale DMRG simulations and find that the dynamical exponent is z = 3.2 in both cases. Other excited states show a different z, indicating that these models have multiple dynamics. Moreover, we modify the spin-1/2 model by adding a ferromagnetic Heisenberg term, which changes the entire spectrum. We track the resulting non-trivial evolution of the dynamical exponents using DMRG. Finally, we exploit an exact map from the quantum Hamiltonian to the non-equilibrium dynamics of a classical spin chain to shed light on the quantum dynamics.

Many-body systems with multiple emergent time scales arise in various contexts, including classical critical systems, correlated quantum materials, and ultra-cold atoms. We investigate such non-trivial quantum dynamics in a new setting: a spin-1 bili near-biquadratic chain. It has a solvable entangled groundstate, but a gapless excitation spectrum that is poorly understood. By using large-scale DMRG simulations, we find that the lowest excitations have a dynamical exponent $z$ that varies from 2 to 3.2 as we vary a coupling in the Hamiltonian. We find an additional gapless mode with a continuously varying exponent $2leq z <2.7$, which establishes the presence of multiple dynamics. In order to explain these striking properties, we construct a continuum wavefunction for the groundstate, which correctly describes the correlations and entanglement properties. We also give a continuum parent Hamiltonian, but show that additional ingredients are needed to capture the excitations of the chain. By using an exact mapping to the non-equilibrium dynamics of a classical spin chain, we find that the large dynamical exponent is due to subdiffusive spin motion. Finally, we discuss the connections to other spin chains and to a family of quantum critical models in 2d.
The spin ice materials, including Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7, are rare earth pyrochlore magnets which, at low temperatures, enter a constrained paramagnetic state with an emergent gauge freedom. Remarkably, the spin ices provide one of very few experiment ally realised examples of fractionalization because their elementary excitations can be regarded as magnetic monopoles and, over some temperature range, the spin ice materials are best described as liquids of these emergent charges. In the presence of quantum fluctuations, one can obtain, in principle, a quantum spin liquid descended from the classical spin ice state characterised by emergent photon-like excitations. Whereas in classical spin ices the excitations are akin to electrostatic charges, in the quantum spin liquid these charges interact through a dynamic and emergent electromagnetic field. In this review, we describe the latest developments in the study of such a quantum spin ice, focussing on the spin liquid phenomenology and the kinds of materials where such a phase might be found.
We investigate spin chains with bilinear-biquadratic spin interactions as a function of an applied magnetic field $h$. At the Uimin-Lai-Sutherland (ULS) critical point we find a remarkable hierarchy of fractionalized excitations revealed by the dynam ical structure factor $S(q,omega)$ as a function of magnetic field yielding a transition from a gapless phase to another gapless phase before reaching the fully polarized state. At $h=0$, the envelope of the lowest energy excitations goes soft at two points $q_1=2pi/3$ and $q_2=4pi/3$, dubbed the A-phase. With increasing field, the spectral peaks at each of the gapless points bifurcate and combine to form a new set of fractionalized excitations that soften at a single point $q=pi$ at $h_{c1}approx 0.94$. Beyond $h_{c1}$ the system remains in this phase dubbed the B-phase until the transition at $h_{c2}=4$ to the fully polarized phase. We discuss the central charge of these two gapless phases and contrast the behavior with that of the gapped Haldane phase in a field.
Topology in quantum matter is typically associated with gapped phases. For example, in symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, the bulk energy gap localizes edge modes near the boundary. In this work we identify a new mechanism that leads to top ological phases which are not only gapless but where the absence of a gap is essential. These `intrinsically gapless SPT phases have no gapped counterpart and are hence also distinct from recently discovered examples of gapless SPT phases. The essential ingredient of these phases is that on-site symmetries act in an anomalous fashion at low energies. Intrinsically gapless SPT phases are found to display several unique properties including (i) protected edge modes that are impossible to realize in a gapped system with the same symmetries, (ii) string order parameters that are likewise forbidden in gapped phases, and (iii) constraints on the phase diagram obtained upon perturbing the phase. We verify predictions of the general theory in a specific realization protected by $mathbb Z_4$ symmetry, the one dimensional Ising-Hubbard chain, using both numerical simulations and effective field theory. We also discuss extensions to higher dimensions and possible experimental realizations.
We show that a chain of Heisenberg spins interacting with long-range dipolar forces in a magnetic field h perpendicular to the chain exhibits a quantum critical point belonging to the two-dimensional Ising universality class. Within linear spin-wave theory the magnon dispersion for small momenta k is [Delta^2 + v_k^2 k^2]^{1/2}, where Delta^2 propto |h - h_c| and v_k^2 propto |ln k|. For fields close to h_c linear spin-wave theory breaks down and we investigate the system using density-matrix and functional renormalization group methods. The Ginzburg regime where non-Gaussian fluctuations are important is found to be rather narrow on the ordered side of the transition, and very broad on the disordered side.
