We periodically kick a local region in a one-dimensional lattice and demonstrate, by studying wave packet dynamics, that the strength and the time period of the kicking can be used as tuning parameters to control the transmission probability across the region. Interestingly, we can tune the transmission to zero which is otherwise impossible to do in a time-independent system. We adapt the non-equilibrium Greens function method to take into account the effects of periodic driving; the results obtained by this method agree with those found by wave packet dynamics if the time period is small. We discover that Floquet bound states can exist in certain ranges of parameters; when the driving frequency is decreased, these states get delocalized and turn into resonances by mixing with the Floquet bulk states. We extend these results to incorporate the effects of local interactions at the driven site, and we find some interesting features in the transmission and the bound states.

We analyze Andreev bound states (ABSs) that form in normal sections of a Rashba nanowire that is only partially covered by a superconducting layer. These ABSs are localized close to the ends of the superconducting section and can be pinned to zero en ergy over a wide range of magnetic field strengths even if the nanowire is in the non-topological regime. For finite-size nanowires (typically $lesssim 1$ $mu$m in current experiments), the ABS localization length is comparable to the length of the nanowire. The probability density of an ABS is therefore non-zero throughout the nanowire and differential-conductance calculations reveal a correlated zero-bias peak (ZBP) at both ends of the nanowire. When a second normal section hosts an additional ABS at the opposite end of the superconducting section, the combination of the two ABSs can mimic the closing and reopening of the bulk gap in local and non-local conductances accompanied by the appearance of the ZBP. These signatures are reminiscent of those expected for Majorana bound states (MBSs) but occur here in the non-topological regime. Our results demonstrate that conductance measurements of correlated ZBPs at the ends of a typical superconducting nanowire or an apparent closing and reopening of the bulk gap in the local and non-local conductance are not conclusive indicators for the presence of MBSs.
We investigate the effect of periodic driving by an external field on systems with attractive pairing interactions. These include spin systems (like the ferromagnetic XXZ model) as well as ultracold fermionic atoms described by the attractive Hubbard model. We show that a well-known phenomenon seen in periodically driven systems--the renormalization of the exchange coupling strength--acts selectively on bound-pairs of spins/atoms, relative to magnon/bare atom states. Thus one can control the direction and speed of transport of bound-pair relative to magnon/unpaired atom states, and thus coherently achieve spatial separation of these components. Applications to recent experiments on transport with fermionic atoms in optical lattices which consist of mixtures of bound-pairs and bare atoms are discussed.
We report the results of an experiment investigating coherence and correlation effects in a system of coupled donors. Two donors are strongly coupled to two leads in a parallel configuration within a nano-wire field effect transistor. By applying a m agnetic field we observe interference between two donor-induced Kondo channels, which depends on the Aharonov-Bohm phase picked up by electrons traversing the structure. This results in a non-monotonic conductance as a function of magnetic field and clearly demonstrates that donors can be coupled through a many-body state in a coherent manner. We present a model which shows good qualitative agreement with our data. The presented results add to the general understanding of interference effects in a donor-based correlated system which may allow to create artificial lattices that exhibit exotic many-body excitations.
Adsorbate engineering is a promising route for controlling the electronic properties of monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide materials. Here, we study shallow bound states induced by charged adatoms on MoS$_2$ using large-scale tight-binding sim ulations with screened adatom potentials obtained from ab initio calculations. The interplay of unconventional screening in two-dimensional systems and multivalley effects in the transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) band structure results in a rich diversity of bound impurity states. We present results for impurity state wavefunctions and energies, as well as for the local density of states in the vicinity of the adatom which can be measured using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. We find that the presence of several distinct valleys in the MoS$_2$ band structure gives rise to crossovers of impurity states at critical charge strengths, altering the orbital character of the most strongly bound state. We compare our results to simpler methods, such as the 2D hydrogen atom and effective mass theory, and we discuss limitations of these approaches.
The impact of bound states in Landauer-Buttiker scattering approach to non-equilibrium quantum transport is investigated. We show that the noise power at frequency $ u$ is sensitive to all bound states with energies $omega_b$ satisfying $|omega_b| < u$. We derive the exact expression of the bound state contribution and compare it to the one produced by the scattering states alone. It turns out that the bound states lead to specific modifications of both space and frequency dependence of the total noise power. The theoretical and experimental consequences of this result are discussed.
