Luminous Galactic OH/IR stars have been identified as massive (>4-5 M_s) AGB stars experiencing HBB and Li production. Their Rb abundances and [Rb/Zr] ratios derived from hydrostatic model atmospheres, are significantly higher than predictions from AGB nucleosynthesis models, posing a problem to our understanding of AGB evolution and nucleosynthesis. We report new Rb and Zr abundances in the full sample of massive Galactic AGB stars, previously studied with hydrostatic models, by using more realistic extended model atmospheres. We use a modified version of the spectral synthesis code Turbospectrum and consider the presence of a circumstellar envelope and radial wind. The Rb and Zr abundances are determined from the 7800 A Rb I resonant line and the 6474 A ZrO bandhead, respectively, and we explore the sensitivity of the derived abundances to variations of the stellar (Teff) and wind (M_loss, beta and vexp) parameters in the extended models. The Rb and Zr abundances derived from the best spectral fits are compared with the most recent AGB nucleosynthesis theoretical models. The new Rb abundances are much lower (even 1-2 dex) than those derived with the hydrostatic models, while the Zr abundances are similar. The Rb I line profile and Rb abundance are very sensitive to the M_loss rate but much less sensitive to variations of the wind velocity-law and the vexp(OH). We confirm the earlier preliminary results based on a smaller sample of massive O-rich AGB stars, that the use of extended atmosphere models can solve the discrepancy between the AGB nucleosynthesis theoretical models and the observations of Galactic massive AGB stars. The Rb abundances, however, are still strongly dependent of the M_loss, which is unknown in these AGB stars. Accurate M_loss rates in these massive Galactic AGB stars are needed in order to break the models degeneracy and get reliable Rb abundances in these stars.

A long debated issue concerning the nucleosynthesis of neutron-rich elements in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars is the identification of the neutron source. We report intermediate-mass (4 to 8 solar masses) AGB stars in our Galaxy that are rubidi um-rich owing to overproduction of the long-lived radioactive isotope 87Rb, as predicted theoretically 40 years ago. This represents a direct observational evidence that the 22Ne(alpha,n)25Mg reaction must be the dominant neutron source in these stars. These stars then challenge our understanding of the late stages of the evolution of intermediate-mass stars and would promote a highly variable Rb/Sr environment in the early solar nebula.

Spectroscopic determinations of Rubidium abundances were conducted by applying the spectrum fitting method to the Rb I 7800 line for an extensive sample of ~500 late-type dwarfs as well as giants (including Hyades cluster stars) belonging to the gala ctic disk population, with an aim of establishing the behaviour of [Rb/Fe] ratio for disk stars in the metallicity range of -0.6<[Fe/H]<+0.3. An inspection of the resulting Rb abundances for Hyades dwarfs revealed that they show a systematic Teff-dependent trend at >5500K; this means that the results for mid-G to F stars (including the Sun) are not reliable (i.e., more or less overestimated), which might be due to some imperfect treatment of surface convection in classical model atmospheres. As such, it was decided to confine only to late-G and K stars at Teff<5500K and adopt the solar-system (meteoritic) value as the reference Rb abundance. The [Rb/Fe] vs.[Fe/H] relations derived for field dwarfs and giants turned out to be consistent with each other, showing a gradual increase of [Rb/Fe] with a decrease in [Fe/H] (with d[Rb/Fe]/d[Fe/H] gradient of ~-0.4 around the solar metallicity), which is favourably compared with the theoretical prediction of chemical evolution models. Accordingly, this study could not confirm the anomalous behaviour of [Rb/Fe] ratio (tending to be subsolar but steeply increasing toward supersolar metallicity) recently reported for M dwarf stars of -0.3<[Fe/H]<+0.3.
Multiple stellar populations (MPs) are a distinct characteristic of Globular Clusters (GCs). Their general properties have been widely studied among main sequence, red giant branch (RGB) and horizontal branch (HB) stars, but a common framework is sti ll missing at later evolutionary stages. We studied the MP phenomenon along the AGB sequences in 58 GCs, observed with the Hubble Space Telescope in ultraviolet (UV) and optical filters. By using UV-optical color-magnitude diagrams, we selected the AGB members of each cluster and identified the AGB candidates of the metal-enhanced population in type II GCs. We studied the photometric properties of AGB stars and compared them to theoretical models derived from synthetic spectra analysis. We observe the following features: i) the spread of AGB stars in photometric indices sensitive to variations of light-elements and helium is typically larger than that expected from photometric errors; ii) the fraction of metal-enhanced stars in the AGB is lower than in the RGB in most of the type II GCs; iii) the fraction of 1G stars derived from the chromosome map of AGB stars in 15 GCs is larger than that of RGB stars; v) the AGB/HB frequency correlates with the average mass of the most helium-enriched population. These findings represent a clear evidence of the presence of MPs along the AGB of Galactic GCs and indicate that a significant fraction of helium-enriched stars, which have lower mass in the HB, does not evolve to the AGB phase, leaving the HB sequence towards higher effective temperatures, as predicted by the AGB-manque scenario.
This paper presents a summary of four invited and twelve contributed presentations on asymptotic giant branch stars and red supergiants, given over the course of two afternoon splinter sessions at the 19th Cool Stars Workshop. It highlights both rece nt observations and recent theory, with some emphasis on high spatial resolution, over a wide range of wavelengths. Topics covered include 3D models, convection, binary interactions, mass loss, dust formation and magnetic fields.
We explore the detailed and broad properties of carbon burning in Super Asymptotic Giant Branch (SAGB) stars with 2755 MESA stellar evolution models. The location of first carbon ignition, quenching location of the carbon burning flames and flashes, angular frequency of the carbon core, and carbon core mass are studied as a function of the ZAMS mass, initial rotation rate, and mixing parameters such as convective overshoot, semiconvection, thermohaline and angular momentum transport. In general terms, we find these properties of carbon burning in SAGB models are not a strong function of the initial rotation profile, but are a sensitive function of the overshoot parameter. We quasi-analytically derive an approximate ignition density, $rho_{ign} approx 2.1 times 10^6$ g cm$^{-3}$, to predict the location of first carbon ignition in models that ignite carbon off-center. We also find that overshoot moves the ZAMS mass boundaries where off-center carbon ignition occurs at a nearly uniform rate of $Delta M_{rm ZAMS}$/$Delta f_{rm{ov}}approx$ 1.6 $M_{odot}$. For zero overshoot, $f_{rm{ov}}$=0.0, our models in the ZAMS mass range $approx$ 8.9 to 11 $M_{odot}$ show off-center carbon ignition. For canonical amounts of overshooting, $f_{rm{ov}}$=0.016, the off-center carbon ignition range shifts to $approx$ 7.2 to 8.8 $M_{odot}$. Only systems with $f_{rm{ov}}$ $geq 0.01$ and ZAMS mass $approx$ 7.2-8.0 $M_{odot}$ show carbon burning is quenched a significant distance from the center. These results suggest a careful assessment of overshoot modeling approximations on claims that carbon burning quenches an appreciable distance from the center of the carbon core.
