We present an end-to-end image compression system based on compressive sensing. The presented system integrates the conventional scheme of compressive sampling and reconstruction with quantization and entropy coding. The compression performance, in terms of decoded image quality versus data rate, is shown to be comparable with JPEG and significantly better at the low rate range. We study the parameters that influence the system performance, including (i) the choice of sensing matrix, (ii) the trade-off between quantization and compression ratio, and (iii) the reconstruction algorithms. We propose an effective method to jointly control the quantization step and compression ratio in order to achieve near optimal quality at any given bit rate. Furthermore, our proposed image compression system can be directly used in the compressive sensing camera, e.g. the single pixel camera, to construct a hardware compressive sampling system.

Image compression is one of the most fundamental techniques and commonly used applications in the image and video processing field. Earlier methods built a well-designed pipeline, and efforts were made to improve all modules of the pipeline by handcr afted tuning. Later, tremendous contributions were made, especially when data-driven methods revitalized the domain with their excellent modeling capacities and flexibility in incorporating newly designed modules and constraints. Despite great progress, a systematic benchmark and comprehensive analysis of end-to-end learned image compression methods are lacking. In this paper, we first conduct a comprehensive literature survey of learned image compression methods. The literature is organized based on several aspects to jointly optimize the rate-distortion performance with a neural network, i.e., network architecture, entropy model and rate control. We describe milestones in cutting-edge learned image-compression methods, review a broad range of existing works, and provide insights into their historical development routes. With this survey, the main challenges of image compression methods are revealed, along with opportunities to address the related issues with recent advanced learning methods. This analysis provides an opportunity to take a further step towards higher-efficiency image compression. By introducing a coarse-to-fine hyperprior model for entropy estimation and signal reconstruction, we achieve improved rate-distortion performance, especially on high-resolution images. Extensive benchmark experiments demonstrate the superiority of our model in rate-distortion performance and time complexity on multi-core CPUs and GPUs. Reliable and accurate 3D object detection is a necessity for safe autonomous driving. Although LiDAR sensors can provide accurate 3D point cloud estimates of the environment, they are also prohibitively expensive for many settings. Recently, the intr oduction of pseudo-LiDAR (PL) has led to a drastic reduction in the accuracy gap between methods based on LiDAR sensors and those based on cheap stereo cameras. PL combines state-of-the-art deep neural networks for 3D depth estimation with those for 3D object detection by converting 2D depth map outputs to 3D point cloud inputs. However, so far these two networks have to be trained separately. In this paper, we introduce a new framework based on differentiable Change of Representation (CoR) modules that allow the entire PL pipeline to be trained end-to-end. The resulting framework is compatible with most state-of-the-art networks for both tasks and in combination with PointRCNN improves over PL consistently across all benchmarks -- yielding the highest entry on the KITTI image-based 3D object detection leaderboard at the time of submission. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end feature compression scheme by leveraging the representation and learning capability of deep neural networks, towards intelligent front-end equipped analysis with promising accuracy and efficiency. In parti cular, the extracted features are compactly coded in an end-to-end manner by optimizing the rate-distortion cost to achieve feature-in-feature representation. In order to further improve the compression performance, we present a latent code level teacher-student enhancement model, which could efficiently transfer the low bit-rate representation into a high bit rate one. Such a strategy further allows us to adaptively shift the representation cost to decoding computations, leading to more flexible feature compression with enhanced decoding capability. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed model with the facial feature, and experimental results reveal better compression performance in terms of rate-accuracy compared with existing models.
We propose a novel method for semantic segmentation, the task of labeling each pixel in an image with a semantic class. Our method combines the advantages of the two main competing paradigms. Methods based on region classification offer proper spatia l support for appearance measurements, but typically operate in two separate stages, none of which targets pixel labeling performance at the end of the pipeline. More recent fully convolutional methods are capable of end-to-end training for the final pixel labeling, but resort to fixed patches as spatial support. We show how to modify modern region-based approaches to enable end-to-end training for semantic segmentation. This is achieved via a differentiable region-to-pixel layer and a differentiable free-form Region-of-Interest pooling layer. Our method improves the state-of-the-art in terms of class-average accuracy with 64.0% on SIFT Flow and 49.9% on PASCAL Context, and is particularly accurate at object boundaries.
Modern deep learning techniques have enabled advances in image-based dietary assessment such as food recognition and food portion size estimation. Valuable information on the types of foods and the amount consumed are crucial for prevention of many c hronic diseases. However, existing methods for automated image-based food analysis are neither end-to-end nor are capable of processing multiple tasks (e.g., recognition and portion estimation) together, making it difficult to apply to real life applications. In this paper, we propose an image-based food analysis framework that integrates food localization, classification and portion size estimation. Our proposed framework is end-to-end, i.e., the input can be an arbitrary food image containing multiple food items and our system can localize each single food item with its corresponding predicted food type and portion size. We also improve the single food portion estimation by consolidating localization results with a food energy distribution map obtained by conditional GAN to generate a four-channel RGB-Distribution image. Our end-to-end framework is evaluated on a real life food image dataset collected from a nutrition feeding study.
