An easily constructed and operated polarimeter precisely determines the relative Stokes parameters that characterize the polarization of laser light. The polarimeter is calibrated in situ without removing or realigning its optical elements, and it is largely immune to fluctuations in the laser beam intensity. The polarimeters usefulness is illustrated by measuring thermally-induced birefringence in the indium-tin-oxide coated glass field plates used to produce a static electric field in the ACME collaborations measurement of the electron electric dipole moment.

Accurate calibration of polarization dependent optical elements is often necessary in optical experiments. A versatile polarimeter device to measure the polarization state of light is a valuable tool in these experiments. Here we report a rotating wa veplate-based polarimeter capable of complete Stokes vector analysis of collimated light. Calibration of the device allows accurate measurements over a range of wavelengths, with a bandwidth of >30 nm in this implementation. A photo-interrupter trigger system supplies the phase information necessary for full determination of the Stokes vector. An Arduino microcontroller performs rapid analysis and displays the results on a liquid crystal display. The polarimeter is compact and can be placed anywhere on an optical table on a single standard post. The components to construct the device are only a fraction of the cost of commercially available devices while the accuracy and precision of the measurements are of the same order of magnitude.

The detection of polarization states of light is essential in photonic and optoelectronic devices. Currently, the polarimeters are usually constructed with the help of waveplates or a comprehensive metasurface, which will inevitably increase the fabr ication complexity and unnecessary energy loss. Here, we have successfully demonstrated a self-powered filterless on-chip full-Stokes polarimeter based on a single-layer MoS2/few-layer MoS2 homojunction. Combining the built-in electric field enhanced circular photogalvanic effect with the intrinsic optical anisotropy of MoS2 between in-plane and out-of-plane direction, the device is able to conveniently sense four Stokes parameters of incident light at zero bias without requiring an extra filtering layer, and can function in the wavelength range of 650-690 nm with acceptable average errors. Besides, this homojunction device is easy to integrate with silicon-based chips and could have much smaller sizes than metasurface based polarimeters. Our study thus provides an excellent paradigm for high-performance on-chip filterless polarimeters.
We present the current status and outlook of the optical characterization of the polarimeter at the Bir{e}fringence Magnetique du Vide (BMV) experiment. BMV is a polarimetric search for the QED predicted anisotropy of vacuum in the presence of extern al electromagnetic fields. The main challenge faced in this fundamental test is the measurement of polarization ellipticity on the order of ${10^{-15}}$ induced in linearly polarized laser field per pass through a magnetic field having an amplitude and length ${B^{2}L=100,mathrm{T}^{2}mathrm{m}}$. This challenge is addressed by understanding the noise sources in precision cavity-enhanced polarimetry. In this paper we discuss the first investigation of dynamical birefringence in the signal-enhancing cavity as a result of cavity mirror motion.
He-Ne ring laser gyroscopes are, at present, the most precise devices for absolute angular velocity measurements. Limitations to their performance come from the non--linear dynamics of the laser. Following the Lamb semi-classical theory, we find a se t of critical parameters affecting the time stability of the system. We propose a method for estimating the long term drift of the laser parameters and for filtering out the laser dynamics effects from the rotation measurement. The parameter estimation procedure, based on the perturbative solutions of the laser dynamics, allow us to apply Kalman Filter theory for the estimation of the angular velocity. Results of a comprehensive Monte Carlo simulation and results of a preliminary analysis on experimental data from the ring laser prototype G-Pisa are shown and discussed.
A magnetic spectrometer has been developed for the AWAKE experiment at CERN in order to measure the energy distribution of bunches of electrons accelerated in wakefields generated by proton bunches in plasma. AWAKE is a proof-of-principle experiment for proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration, using proton bunches from the SPS. Electron bunches are accelerated to $mathcal{O}$(1 GeV) in a rubidium plasma cell and then separated from the proton bunches via a dipole magnet. The dipole magnet also induces an energy-dependent spatial horizontal spread on the electron bunch which then impacts on a scintillator screen. The scintillation photons emitted are transported via three highly-reflective mirrors to an intensified CCD camera, housed in a dark room, which passes the images to the CERN controls system for storage and further analysis. Given the known magnetic field and determination of the efficiencies of the system, the spatial spread of the scintillation photons can be converted to an electron energy distribution. A lamp attached on a rail in front of the scintillator is used to calibrate the optical system, with calibration of the scintillator screens response to electrons carried out at the CLEAR facility at CERN. In this article, the design of the AWAKE spectrometer is presented, along with the calibrations carried out and expected performance such that the energy distribution of accelerated electrons can be measured.
