Submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at $zgtrsim1$ are luminous in the far-infrared and have star-formation rates, SFR, of hundreds to thousands of solar masses per year. However, it is unclear whether they are true analogs of local ULIRGs or whether the mode of their star formation is more similar to that in local disk galaxies. We target these questions by using Herschel-PACS to examine the conditions in the interstellar medium (ISM) in far-infrared luminous SMGs at z~1-4. We present 70-160 micron photometry and spectroscopy of the [OIV]26 micron, [FeII]26 micron, [SIII]33 micron, [SiII]34 micron, [OIII]52 micron, [NIII]57 micron, and [OI]63 micron fine-structure lines and the S(0) and S(1) hydrogen rotational lines in 13 lensed SMGs identified by their brightness in early Herschel data. Most of the 13 targets are not individually spectroscopically detected and we instead focus on stacking these spectra with observations of an additional 32 SMGs from the herschel archive -- representing a complete compilation of PACS spectroscopy of SMGs. We detect [OI]63 micron, [SiII]34 micron, and [NIII]57 micron at >3sigma in the stacked spectra, determining that the average strengths of these lines relative to the far-IR continuum are $(0.36pm0.12)times10^{-3}$, $(0.84pm0.17)times10^{-3}$, and $(0.27pm0.10)times10^{-3}$, respectively. Using the [OIII]52/[NIII]57 emission line ratio we show that SMGs have average gas-phase metallicities $gtrsim Z_{rm sun}$. By using PDR modelling and combining the new spectral measurements with integrated far-infrared fluxes and existing [CII]158 micron data we show that SMGs have average gas densities, n, of $sim10^{1-3}{rm cm^{-3}}$ and FUV field strengths, $G_0sim10^{2.2-4.5}$ (in Habing units: $1.6times10^{-3}{rm erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}}$), consistent with both local ULIRGs and lower luminosity star-forming galaxies.

We report the first systematic study of the submillimeter water vapor rotational emission lines in infrared (IR) galaxies based on the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) data of {it Herschel} SPIRE. Among the 176 galaxies with publicly available FT S data, 45 have at least one H$_2$O emission line detected. The H$_2$O line luminosities range from $sim 1 times 10^5$ $L_{odot}$ to $sim 5 times 10^7 L_{odot}$ while the total IR luminosities ($L_mathrm{IR}$) have a similar spread ($sim 1-300 times 10^{10} L_{odot}$). In addition, emission lines of H$_2$O$^+$ and H$_2^{18}$O are also detected. H$_2$O is found, for most galaxies, to be the strongest molecular emitter after CO in FTS spectra. The luminosity of the five most important H$_2$O lines is near-linearly correlated with $L_mathrm{IR}$, no matter whether strong active galactic nucleus signature is present or not. However, the luminosity of H$_2$O($2_{11}-2_{02}$) and H$_2$O($2_{20}-2_{11}$) appears to increase slightly faster than linear with $L_mathrm{IR}$. Although the slope turns out to be slightly steeper when $zsim 2-4$ ULIRGs are included, the correlation is still closely linear. We find that $L_mathrm{H_2O}/L_mathrm{IR}$ decreases with increasing $f_{25}/f_{60}$, but see no dependence on $f_{60}/f_{100}$, possibly indicating that very warm dust contributes little to the excitation of the submillimeter H$_2$O lines. The average spectral line energy distribution (SLED) of the entire sample is consistent with individual SLEDs and the IR pumping plus collisional excitation model, showing that the strongest lines are H$_2$O($2_{02}-1_{11}$) and H$_2$O($3_{21}-3_{12}$).
We analyse the far-infrared properties of $sim$ 5,000 star-forming galaxies at $z<4.5$, drawn from the deepest, super-deblended catalogues in the GOODS-N and COSMOS fields. We develop a novel panchromatic SED fitting algorithm, $texttt{Stardust}$, th at models the emission from stars, AGN, and infrared dust emission, without relying on energy balance assumptions. Our code provides robust estimates of the UV-optical and FIR physical parameters, such as the stellar mass ($M_*$), dust mass ($M_{rm dust}$), infrared luminosities ($L_{rm IR}$) arising from AGN and star formation activity, and the average intensity of the interstellar radiation field ($langle U rangle$). Through a set of simulations we quantify the completeness of our data in terms of $M_{rm dust}$, $L_{rm IR}$ and $langle U rangle$, and subsequently characterise the distribution and evolution of these parameters with redshift. We focus on the dust-to-stellar mass ratio ($f_{rm dust}$), which we parametrise as a function of cosmic age, stellar mass, and specific star formation rate. The $f_{rm dust}$ is found to increase by a factor of 10 from $z=0$ to $z=2$ and appears to remain flat at higher$-z$, mirroring the evolution of the gas fraction. We also find a growing fraction of warm to cold dust with increasing distance from the main sequence, indicative of more intense interstellar radiation fields, higher star formation efficiencies and more compact star forming regions for starburst galaxies. Finally, we construct the dust mass functions (DMF) of star-forming galaxies up to $z=1$ by transforming the stellar mass function to DMF through the scaling relations derived here. The evolution of $f_{rm dust}$ and the recovered DMFs are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions of the Horizon-AGN and IllustrisTNG simulations.
We conducted systematic observations of the HI Br-alpha line (4.05 micron) and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) feature (3.3 micron) in 50 nearby (z<0.3) ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with AKARI. The Br-alpha line is predicted to be the brightest among the HI lines under high dust-extinction conditions (A_V>15 mag). The Br-alpha line traces ionizing photons from OB stars and so is used as an indicator of star formation on the assumption of the initial mass function. We detected the Br-alpha line in 33 ULIRGs. The luminosity of the line (L_BrA) correlates well with that of the 3.3 micron PAH emission (L_3.3). Thus we utilize L_3.3 as an indicator of star formation in fainter objects where the Br-alpha line is undetected. The mean L_BrA/L_IR ratio in LINERs/Seyferts is significantly lower than that in HII galaxies. This difference is reconfirmed with the L_3.3/L_IR ratio in the larger sample (46 galaxies). Using the ratios, we estimate that the contribution of starburst in LINERs/Seyferts is ~67%, and active galactic nuclei contribute to the remaining ~33%. However, comparing the number of ionizing photons, Q_BrA, derived from L_BrA with that, Q_IR, expected from star formation rate required to explain L_IR, we find that the mean Q_BrA/Q_IR ratio is only 55.5+/-7.5% even in HII galaxies which are thought to be energized by pure starburst. This deficit of ionizing photons traced by the Br-alpha line is significant even taking heavy dust extinction into consideration. We propose that dust within HII regions absorbs a significant fraction of ionizing photons.
Recent Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) observations at 115-175 MHz of a field at medium Galactic latitudes (centered at the bright quasar 3C196) have shown striking filamentary structures in polarization that extend over more than 4 degrees across the sk y. In addition, the Planck satellite has released full sky maps of the dust emission in polarization at 353GHz. The LOFAR data resolve Faraday structures along the line of sight, whereas the Planck dust polarization maps probe the orientation of the sky projected magnetic field component. Hence, no apparent correlation between the two is expected. Here we report a surprising, yet clear, correlation between the filamentary structures, detected with LOFAR, and the magnetic field orientation, probed by the Planck satellite. This finding points to a common, yet unclear, physical origin of the two measurements in this specific area in the sky. A number of follow-up multi- frequency studies are proposed to shed light on this unexpected finding.
We present high-resolution (0.16$$) 870um Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) imaging of 16 luminous (L_IR ~ 4 x 10^12 L_sun) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) from the ALESS survey of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. This dust imag ing traces the dust-obscured star formation in these z~2.5 galaxies on ~1.3 kpc scales. The emission has a median effective radius of $R_e=0.24 pm 0.02$, corresponding to a typical physical size of $R_{e}=1.8pm$0.2 kpc. We derive a median Sersic index of $n=0.9pm0.2$, implying that the dust emission is remarkably disk-like at the current resolution and sensitivity. We use different weighting schemes with the visibilities to search for clumps on 0.12$$ (~1.0 kpc) scales, but we find no significant evidence for clumping in the majority of cases. Indeed, we demonstrate using simulations that the observed morphologies are generally consistent with smooth exponential disks, suggesting that caution should be exercised when identifying candidate clumps in even moderate S/N interferometric data. We compare our maps to comparable-resolution HST H$_{160}$-band images, finding that the stellar morphologies appear significantly more extended and disturbed, and suggesting that major mergers may be responsible for driving the formation of the compact dust disks we observe. The stark contrast between the obscured and unobscured morphologies may also have implications for SED fitting routines that assume the dust is co-located with the optical/near-IR continuum emission. Finally, we discuss the potential of the current bursts of star formation to transform the observed galaxy sizes and light profiles, showing that the $zsim0$ descendants of these SMGs are expected to have stellar masses, effective radii, and gas surface densities consistent with the most compact massive (M_* ~ 1-2 x 10^11 M_sun) early-type galaxies observed locally.
