The deliberate insertion of magnetic Mn dopants in the Fe sites of the optimally-doped SmFeAsO0.88-F0.12 iron-based superconductor can modify in a controlled way its electronic properties. The resulting phase diagram was investigated across a wide range of manganese contents (x) by means of muon-spin spectroscopy (muSR), both in zero- and in transverse fields, respectively, to probe the magnetic and the superconducting order. The pure superconducting phase (at x < 0.03) is replaced by a crossover region at intermediate Mn values (0.03 =< x < 0.08), where superconductivity coexists with static magnetic order. After completely suppressing superconductivity for x = 0.08, a further increase in Mn content reinforces the natural tendency towards antiferromagnetic correlations among the magnetic Mn ions. The sharp drop of Tc and the induced magnetic order in the presence of magnetic disorder/dopants, such as Mn, are both consistent with a recent theoretical model of unconventional superconductors [M. Gastiasoro et al., ArXiv 1606.09495], which includes correlation-enhanced RKKY-couplings between the impurity moments.

We prepared polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm1111) bulk samples by sintering and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) in order to study the effects of phase purity and relative density on the intergranular current density. Sintered and HIPped Sm1111 samples a re denser with fewer impurity phases, such as SmOF and the grain boundary wetting phase, FeAs. We found quite complex magnetization behavior due to variations of both the inter and intragranular current densities. Removing porosity and reducing second phase content enhanced the intergranular current density, but HIPping reduced Tc and the intragranular current density, due to loss of fluorine and reduction of Tc. We believe that the HIPped samples are amongst the purest polycrystalline 1111 samples yet made. However, their intergranular current densities are still small, providing further evidence that polycrystalline pnictides, like polycrystalline cuprates, are intrinsically granular.

We consider the impact of the competition among superconductivity, spin density wave, and nematic order in iron pnictides, and show that the ordering competition substantially reshapes the global phase diagram. We perform a detailed renormalization g roup analysis of an effective field theory of iron pnictides and derive the flow equations of all the physical parameters. Using these results, we find that superconductivity can be strongly suppressed by the ordering competition, and also extract the $T$-dependence of superfluid density. Moreover, the phase transitions may become first order. Interestingly, our RG analysis reveal that the nematic order exists only in an intermediate temperature region $T_{m}< T < T_{n}$, but is destroyed at $T > T_{n}$ by thermal fluctuation and at $T < T_{m}$ by ordering competition. This anomalous existence of nematic order leads to a back-bending of the nematic transition line on the phase diagram, consistent with the observed reentrance of tetragonal structure at low temperatures. A modified phase diagram is obtained based on the RG results.
A general constructive procedure is presented for analyzing magnetic instabilities in two-dimensional materials, in terms of [predominantly] double nesting, and applied to Hartree-Fock HF+RPA and Gutzwiller approximation GA+RPA calculations of the Hu bbard model. Applied to the cuprates, it is found that competing magnetic interactions are present only for hole doping, between half filling and the Van Hove singularity. While HF+RPA instabilities are present at all dopings (for sufficiently large Hubbard U), in a Gutzwiller approximation they are restricted to a doping range close to the range of relevance for the physical cuprates. The same model would hold for charge instabilities, except that the interaction is more likely to be q-dependent.
The relationship between antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and superconductivity has become a central topic of research in studies of superconductivity in the iron pnictides. We present unambiguous evidence of the absence of magnetic fluctuations i n the non-superconducting collapsed tetragonal phase of CaFe2As2 via inelastic neutron scattering time-of-flight data, which is consistent with the view that spin fluctuations are a necessary ingredient for unconventional superconductivity in the iron pnictides. We demonstrate that the collapsed tetragonal phase of CaFe2As2 is non-magnetic, and discuss this result in light of recent reports of high-temperature superconductivity in the collapsed tetragonal phase of closely related compounds.
We investigated the magnetic phase diagram of the first Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12 by means of high-resolution dc magnetization measurements in low temperatures down to 0.06K. The temperature dependence of the magnetization M(T) at 0.1kOe exhibits two distinct anomalies at Tc1=1.83K and Tc2=1.65K, in agreement with the specific heat measurements at zero field. Increasing magnetic field H, both Tc1(H) and Tc2(H) move toward lower temperatures without showing a tendency of intersecting to each other. Above 10kOe, the transition at Tc2(H) appears to merge into a line of the peak effect which is observed near the upper critical field Hc2 in the isothermal M(H) curves, suggesting a common origin for these two phenomena. The presence of the field-induced ordered phase (called phase A here) is confirmed for three principal directions above 40kOe, with the anisotropic A-phase transition temperature TA: TA[100] > TA[111] >TA[110]. The present results are discussed on the basis of crystalline-electrical-field level schemes with a non-magnetic ground state, with emphasis on a Gamma1 singlet as the possible ground state of Pr3+ in PrOs4Sb12.
