The temperature of the working environment is a key factor in determining the properties of semiconductor detectors, and it affects the absolute accuracy and stability of the standard detector. In order to determine the temperature coefficient of CdTe detector used for X-rays detection, a precise temperature control system was designed. In this experiment, detectors and radiographic source were set inside the thermostat with temperature of 0-40 Celsius degree, so that the temperature can be regulated for the test of the temperature coefficient of CdTe detector. Studies had shown that, with the increase of the temperature, the energy resolution and detection efficiency of the CdTe detector would deteriorate, and under 10 Celsius degree the detectors have better performance with the 8 keV X-rays.

A CdTe double-sided strip detector (CdTe-DSD) is an ideal device for imaging and spectroscopic measure- ments in the hard X-ray range above 10 keV. Recent development enables us to realize an imager with a detection area of ~10 cm${^2}$. An energy re solution of 1-2 keV (FWHM) and a position resolution of a few hundred {mu}m are available from the detector. This type of imager has been long awaited for non-destructive elemental analysis, especially by using negative muons, because energies of characteristic X-rays from muonic atoms are about 200 time higher than those from normal atoms. With the method that uses negative muons, hard X-ray information gives the spatial distribution of elements in samples at a certain depth defined by the initial momentum of the muon beam. In order to study three-dimensional imaging capability of the method, we have developed a compact imaging system based on CdTe-DSD and a {phi}3 mm pinhole collimator as the first prototype. We conducted experiments with samples which consist of layers of Al, BN and LiF irradiated by negative muon beams in MUSE/J-PARC and successfully reconstruct hard X-ray images of muonic X-rays from B, N and F at various depths.
Photomultipliers are commonly used in commercial PET scanner as devices which convert light produced in scintillator by gamma quanta from positron-electron annihilation into electrical signal. For proper analysis of obtained electrical signal, a phot omultiplier gain curve must be known, since gain can be significantly different even between photomultipliers of the same model. In this article we describe single photoelectron method used for photomultipliers calibration applied for J-PET scanner, a novel PET detector being developed at the Jagiellonian University. Description of calibration method, an example of calibration curve and gain of few R4998 Hamamatsu photomultipliers are presented.
A new hybrid experiment has been constructed to measure the chemical composition of cosmic rays around the knee in the wide energy range by the Tibet AS$gamma$ collaboration at Tibet, China, since 2014. They consist of a high-energy air-shower-core a rray (YAC-II), a high-density air-shower array (Tibet-III) and a large underground water-Cherenkov muon-detector array (MD). In order to obtain the primary proton, helium and iron spectra and their knee positions in the energy range lower than $10^{16}$ eV, each of PMTs equipped to the MD cell is required to measure the number of photons capable of covering a wide dynamic range of 100 - $10^{6}$ photoelectrons (PEs) according to Monte Carlo simulations. In this paper, we firstly compare the characteristic features between R5912-PMT made by Japan Hamamatsu and CR365-PMT made by Beijing Hamamatsu. This is the first comparison between R5912-PMT and CR365-PMT. If there exists no serious difference, we will then add two 8-inch-in-diameter PMTs to meet our requirements in each MD cell, which are responsible for the range of 100 - 10000 PEs and 2000 - 1000000 PEs, respectively. That is, MD cell is expected to be able to measure the number of muons over 6 orders of magnitude.
In a neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0 ubetabeta$) experiment, energy resolution is important to distinguish between $0 ubetabeta$ and background events. CAlcium fluoride for studies of Neutrino and Dark matters by Low Energy Spectrometer (CANDLES) discerns the $0 ubetabeta$ of $^{48}$Ca using a CaF$_2$ scintillator as the detector and source. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) collect scintillation photons. At the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca, the current energy resolution (2.6%) exceeds the ideal statistical fluctuation of the number of photoelectrons (1.6%). Because of CaF$_2$s long decay constant of 1000 ns, a signal integration within 4000 ns is used to calculate the energy. The baseline fluctuation ($sigma_{baseline}$) is accumulated in the signal integration, thus degrading the energy resolution. This paper studies $sigma_{baseline}$ in the CANDLES detector, which severely degrades the resolution by 1% at the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca. To avoid $sigma_{rm baseline}$, photon counting can be used to obtain the number of photoelectrons in each PMT; however, a significant photoelectron signal overlapping probability in each PMT causes missing photoelectrons in counting and reduces the energy resolution. Partial photon counting reduces $sigma_{baseline}$ and minimizes photoelectron loss. We obtain improved energy resolutions of 4.5-4.0% at 1460.8 keV ($gamma$-ray of $^{40}$K), and 3.3-2.9% at 2614.5 keV ($gamma$-ray of $^{208}$Tl). The energy resolution at the Q-value is estimated to be improved from 2.6% to 2.2%, and the detector sensitivity for the $0 ubetabeta$ half-life of $^{48}$Ca can be improved by 1.09 times.

LXeGRIT - Liquid Xenon Gamma-Ray Imaging Telescope - is the first prototype of a Compton telescope for MeV g-ray astrophysics based on a LXe time projection chamber. One of the most relevant figures of merit for a Compton telescope is the detection e fficiency for g-rays, which depends on diverse contributions such as detector geometry and passive materials, trigger efficiency, dead time, etc. A detailed study of the efficiency of the LXeGRIT instrument, based both on laboratory measurements and Monte Carlo simulations, is presented in this paper.
