Single photons with orbital angular momentum (OAM) have attracted substantial attention from researchers. A single photon can carry infinite OAM values theoretically. Thus, OAM photon states have been widely used in quantum information and fundamental quantum mechanics. Although there have been many methods for sorting quantum states with different OAM values, the nondestructive and efficient sorter of high-dimensional OAM remains a fundamental challenge. Here, we propose a scalable OAM sorter which can categorize different OAM states simultaneously, meanwhile, preserving both OAM and spin angular momentum. Fundamental elements of the sorter are composed of symmetric multiport beam splitters (BSs) and Dove prisms with cascading structure, which in principle can be flexibly and effectively combined to sort arbitrarily high-dimensional OAM photons. The scalable structures proposed here greatly reduce the number of BSs required for sorting high-dimensional OAMstates. In view of the nondestructive and extensible features, the sorters can be used as fundamental devices not only for high-dimensional quantum information processing, but also for traditional optics.

On-chip photon sources carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are in demand for high-capacity optical information processing in both classical and quantum regimes. However, currently-exploited integrated OAM sources have been primarily limited to th e classical regime. Herein, we demonstrate a room-temperature on-chip integrated OAM source that emits well-collimated single photons, with a single-photon purity of g(2)(0) = 0.22, carrying entangled spin and orbital angular momentum states and forming two spatially separated entangled radiation channels with different polarization properties. The OAM-encoded single photons are generated by efficiently outcoupling diverging surface plasmon polaritons excited with a deterministically positioned quantum emitter via Archimedean spiral gratings. Our OAM single-photon sources bridge the gap between conventional OAM manipulation and nonclassical light sources, enabling high-dimensional and large-scale photonic quantum systems for information processing.
Light beams carrying orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) play an important role in optical manipulation and communication owing to their unbounded state space. However, it is still challenging to efficiently discriminate OAM modes with large topological c harges and thus only a small part of the OAM states have been usually used. Here we demonstrate that neural networks can be trained to sort OAM modes with large topological charges and unknown superpositions. Using intensity images of OAM modes generalized in simulations and experiments as the input data, we illustrate that our neural network has great generalization power to recognize OAM modes of large topological charges beyond training areas with high accuracy. Moreover, the trained neural network can correctly classify and predict arbitrary superpositions of two OAM modes with random topological charges. Our machine learning approach only requires a small portion of experimental samples and significantly reduces the cost in experiments, which paves the way to study the OAM physics and increase the state space of OAM beams in practical applications.
As one fundamental property of light, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photon has elicited widespread interest. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that the OAM conversion of light without any spin state can occur in homogeneous and isotropic med ium when a specially tailored locally linearly polarized (STLLP) beam is strongly focused by a high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens. Through a high NA objective lens, the STLLP beams can generate identical twin foci with tunable distance between them controlled by input state of polarization. Such process admits partial OAM conversion from linear state to conjugate OAM states, giving rise to helical phases with opposite directions for each focus of the longitudinal component in the focal field.

The existing techniques for measuring high-dimensional pure states of light in the orbital angular momentum (OAM) basis either involve a large number of single-pixel data acquisitions and substantial postselection errors that increase with dimensiona lity, or involve substantial loss, or require interference with a reference beam of known phase. Here, we propose an interferometric technique that can measure an unknown pure state using only nine multipixel image acquisitions without involving postselection, loss, or a separate reference beam. The technique essentially measures two complex correlation functions of the input field and then employs a recursive postprocessing algorithm to infer the state. We experimentally demonstrate the technique for pure states up to dimensionality of 25, reporting a mean fidelity greater than 90 % up to 11 dimensions. Our technique can significantly improve the performance of OAM-based information processing applications.
Phase manipulation is essential to quantum information processing, for which the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photon is a promising high-dimensional resource. Dove prism (DP) is one of the most important element to realize the nondestructive pha se manipulation of OAM photons. DP usually changes the polarization of light and thus increases the manipulation error for a spin-OAM hybrid state. DP in a Sagnac interferometer also introduces a mode-dependent global phase to the OAM mode. In this work, we implemented a high-dimensional controlled-phase manipulation module (PMM), which can compensate the mode-dependent global phase and thus preserve the phase in the spin-OAM hybrid superposition state. The PMM is stable for free running and is suitable to realize the high-dimensional controlled-phase gate for spin-OAM hybrid states. Considering the Sagnac-based structure, the PMM is also suitable for classical communication with spin-OAM hybrid light field.
