In the framework of a multiorbital Hubbard model description of superconductivity, a matrix formulation of the superconducting pairing interaction that has been widely used is designed to treat spin, charge and orbital fluctuations within a random phase approximation (RPA). In terms of Feynman diagrams, this takes into account particle-hole ladder and bubble contributions as expected. It turns out, however, that this matrix formulation also generates additional terms which have the diagrammatic structure of vertex corrections. Here we examine these terms and discuss the relationship between the matrix-RPA superconducting pairing interaction and the Feynman diagrams that it sums.

The many-body theory of interacting electrons poses an intrinsically difficult problem that requires simplifying assumptions. For the determination of electronic screening properties of the Coulomb interaction, the Random Phase Approximation (RPA) pr ovides such a simplification. Here, we explicitly show that this approximation is justified for band structures with sizeable band gaps. This is when the electronic states responsible for the screening are energetically far away from the Fermi level, which is equivalent to a short electronic propagation length of these states. The RPA contains exactly those diagrams in which the classical Coulomb interaction covers all distances, whereas neglected vertex corrections involve quantum tunneling through the barrier formed by the band gap. Our analysis of electron-electron interactions provides a real-space analogy to Migdals theorem on the smallness of vertex corrections in electron-phonon problems. An important application is the increasing use of constrained Random Phase Approximation (cRPA) calculations of effective interactions. We find that their usage of Kohn-Sham energies already accounts for the leading local (excitonic) vertex correction in insulators.
To understand the recently established unique magnetic and superconducting phase diagram of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$, we analyze the realistic multiorbital tight-binding model for $x=0 sim 0.4$ beyond the rigid band approximation. Both the spin and orbit al susceptibilities are calculated in the presence of the Coulomb and charge quadrupole interactions. It is found that both orbital and spin fluctuations strongly develop at both $x sim 0$ and 0.4, due to the strong violation of the rigid band picture in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$. Based on this result, we discuss the experimental phase diagram, especially the double-dome superconducting phase. Moreover, we show that the quadrupole interaction is effectively produced by the vertex correction due to Coulomb interaction, resulting in the mutual development of spin and orbital fluctuations.
In this work, we adapt the formalism of the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Gamma$A), a diagrammatic approach including many-body correlations beyond the dynamical mean-field theory, to the case of attractive onsite interactions. We start by exploi ting the ladder approximation of the D$Gamma$A scheme, in order to derive the corresponding equations for the non-local self-energy and vertex functions of the attractive Hubbard model. Second, we prove the validity of our derivation by showing that the results obtained in the particle-hole symmetric case fully preserve the exact mapping between the attractive and the repulsive models. It will be shown, how this property can be related to the structure of the ladders, which makes our derivation applicable for any approximation scheme based on ladder diagrams. Finally, we apply our D$Gamma$A algorithm to the attractive Hubbard model in three dimensions, for different fillings and interaction values. Specifically, we focus on the parameters region in the proximity of the second-order transition to the superconducting and charge-density wave phases, respectively, and calculate (i) their phase-diagrams, (ii) their critical behavior, as well as (iii) the effects of the strong non-local correlations on the single-particle properties.

We use the Random Dispersion Approximation (RDA) to study the Mott-Hubbard transition in the Hubbard model at half band filling. The RDA becomes exact for the Hubbard model in infinite dimensions. We implement the RDA on finite chains and employ the Lanczos exact diagonalization method in real space to calculate the ground-state energy, the average double occupancy, the charge gap, the momentum distribution, and the quasi-particle weight. We find a satisfactory agreement with perturbative results in the weak- and strong-coupling limits. A straightforward extrapolation of the RDA data for $Lleq 14$ lattice results in a continuous Mott-Hubbard transition at $U_{rm c}approx W$. We discuss the significance of a possible signature of a coexistence region between insulating and metallic ground states in the RDA that would correspond to the scenario of a discontinuous Mott-Hubbard transition as found in numerical investigations of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory for the Hubbard model.
The dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) combined with the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) method, namely FLEX+DMFT, is an approach for correlated electron systems to incorporate both local and non-local long-range correlations in a self-consistent manner. We formulate FLEX+DMFT in a systematic way starting from a Luttinger-Ward functional, and apply it to study the $d$-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model. The critical temperature ($T_c$) curve obtained in the FLEX+DMFT exhibits a dome structure as a function of the filling, which has not been clearly observed in the FLEX approach alone. We trace back the origin of the dome to the local vertex correction from DMFT that renders a filling dependence in the FLEX self-energy. We compare the results with those of GW+DMFT, where the $T_c$-dome structure is qualitatively reproduced due to the same vertex correction effect, but a crucial difference from FLEX+DMFT is that $T_c$ is always estimated below the N{e}el temperature in GW+DMFT. The single-particle spectral function obtained with FLEX+DMFT exhibits a double-peak structure as a precursor of the Hubbard bands at temperature above $T_c$.
