Previous studies of the Carina region have revealed its complexity and richness as well as a significant number of early-type stars. In many cases, these studies only concentrated on the central region or were not homogeneous. This latter aspect, in particular, is crucial because very different ages and distances for key clusters have been claimed in recent years. The aim of this work is to study in detail an area of the Galactic plane in Carina. We analyze the properties of different stellar populations and focus on a sample of open clusters and their population of YSOs and highly reddened early stars. We also studied the stellar mass distribution in these clusters and the possible scenario of their formation. Finally, we outline the Galactic spiral structure in this direction. We obtained photometric data for six young open clusters located in Carina at l = 291, and their adjacent stellar fields, which we complemented with spectroscopic observations of a few selected targets. We also culled additional information from the literature. Our results provide more reliable estimates of distances, color excesses, masses, and ages of the stellar populations in this direction. We estimate the basic parameters of the studied clusters and find that they identify two overdensities of young stellar populations. We find evidence of PMS populations inside them, with an apparent coeval stellar formation in the most conspicuous clusters. We also discuss apparent age and distance gradients in the direction NW-SE. We study the mass distributions of several clusters in the region. They consistently show a canonical IMF slope. We discover and characterise an abnormally reddened massive stellar population. Spectroscopic observations of ten stars of this latter population show that all selected targets were massive OB stars. Their location is consistent with the position of the Car-Sag spiral arm.

We present a catalog of eclipsing binaries in the northern Galactic Plane from the Kiso Wide-Field Camera Intensive Survey of the Galactic Plane (KISOGP). We visually identified 7055 eclipsing binaries spread across $sim$330 square degrees, including 4197 W Ursa Majoris/EW-, 1458 $beta$ Lyrae/EB-, and 1400 Algol/EA-type eclipsing binaries. For all systems, $I$-band light curves were used to obtain accurate system parameters. We derived the distances and extinction values for the EW-type objects from their period--luminosity relation. We also obtained the structure of the thin disk from the distribution of our sample of eclipsing binary systems, combined with those of high-mass star-forming regions and Cepheid tracers. We found that the thin disk is inhomogeneous in number density as a function of Galactic longitude. Using this new set of distance tracers, we constrain the detailed structure of the thin disk. Finally, we report a global parallax zero-point offset of $ Delta pi=-42.1pm1.9mbox{(stat.)}pm12.9mbox{(syst.)}$ $mu$as between our carefully calibrated EW-type eclipsing binary positions and those provided by Gaia Early Data Release 3. Implementation of the officially recommended parallax zero-point correction results in a significantly reduced offset. Additionally, we provide a photometric characterization of our EW-type eclipsing binaries that can be applied to further analyses.

We discuss the stellar content of the Galactic Center, and in particular, recent estimates of the star formation rate (SFR). We discuss pros and cons of the different stellar tracers and focus our attention on the SFR based on the three classical Cep heids recently discovered in the Galactic Center. We also discuss stellar populations in field and cluster stars and present some preliminary results based on near-infrared photometry of a field centered on the young massive cluster Arches. We also provide a new estimate of the true distance modulus to the Galactic Center and we found 14.49$pm$0.02(standard)$pm$0.10(systematic) mag (7.91$pm0.08pm0.40$ kpc). Current estimate agrees quite well with similar photometric and kinematic distance determinations available in the literature. We also discuss the metallicity gradient of the thin disk and the sharp change in the slope when moving across the edge of the inner disk, the Galactic Bar and the Galactic Center. The difference becomes even more compelling if we take into account that metal abundances are based on young stellar tracers (classical Cepheids, Red Supergiants, Luminous Blue Variables). Finally, we briefly outline the possible mechanisms that might account for current empirical evidence.
The VERITAS IACT observatory has carried out an extensive survey of the Cygnus region between 67 and 82 degrees in galactic longitude and between -1 and 4 degrees in galactic latitude. This region is a natural choice for a Very High Energy (VHE) gamm a-ray survey in the Northern Hemisphere, as it contains a substantial number of potential VHE gamma-ray emitters such as supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, high-mass X-ray binaries, and massive star clusters, in addition to a few previously detected VHE gamma-ray sources. It is also home to a number of GeV gamma-ray sources, including no less than four new high-significance sources detected in the first six months of Fermi data. The VERITAS survey, comprising more than 140 hours of observations, reaches an average VHE point-source flux sensitivity of better than 4% of the Crab Nebula flux at energies above 200 GeV. Here we report on preliminary results from this survey, including two source detections, and discuss the prospects for further studies that would exploit the joint coverage provided by VERITAS and Fermi data in this region.

Multiple stellar populations (MPs) are a distinct characteristic of Globular Clusters (GCs). Their general properties have been widely studied among main sequence, red giant branch (RGB) and horizontal branch (HB) stars, but a common framework is sti ll missing at later evolutionary stages. We studied the MP phenomenon along the AGB sequences in 58 GCs, observed with the Hubble Space Telescope in ultraviolet (UV) and optical filters. By using UV-optical color-magnitude diagrams, we selected the AGB members of each cluster and identified the AGB candidates of the metal-enhanced population in type II GCs. We studied the photometric properties of AGB stars and compared them to theoretical models derived from synthetic spectra analysis. We observe the following features: i) the spread of AGB stars in photometric indices sensitive to variations of light-elements and helium is typically larger than that expected from photometric errors; ii) the fraction of metal-enhanced stars in the AGB is lower than in the RGB in most of the type II GCs; iii) the fraction of 1G stars derived from the chromosome map of AGB stars in 15 GCs is larger than that of RGB stars; v) the AGB/HB frequency correlates with the average mass of the most helium-enriched population. These findings represent a clear evidence of the presence of MPs along the AGB of Galactic GCs and indicate that a significant fraction of helium-enriched stars, which have lower mass in the HB, does not evolve to the AGB phase, leaving the HB sequence towards higher effective temperatures, as predicted by the AGB-manque scenario.
