Sunspots on the surface of the Sun are the observational signatures of intense manifestations of tightly packed magnetic field lines, with near-vertical field strengths exceeding 6,000 G in extreme cases. It is well accepted that both the plasma density and the magnitude of the magnetic field strength decrease rapidly away from the solar surface, making high-cadence coronal measurements through traditional Zeeman and Hanle effects difficult since the observational signatures are fraught with low-amplitude signals that can become swamped with instrumental noise. Magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) techniques have previously been applied to coronal structures, with single and spatially isolated magnetic field strengths estimated as 9-55 G. A drawback with previous MHD approaches is that they rely on particular wave modes alongside the detectability of harmonic overtones. Here we show, for the first time, how omnipresent magneto-acoustic waves, originating from within the underlying sunspot and propagating radially outwards, allow the spatial variation of the local coronal magnetic field to be mapped with high precision. We find coronal magnetic field strengths of 32 +/- 5 G above the sunspot, which decrease rapidly to values of approximately 1 G over a lateral distance of 7000 km, consistent with previous isolated and unresolved estimations. Our results demonstrate a new, powerful technique that harnesses the omnipresent nature of sunspot oscillations to provide magnetic field mapping capabilities close to a magnetic source in the solar corona.

Using full three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations, we study the effects of magnetic field sigmoidity or helicity on the properties of the fundamental kink oscillation of solar coronal loops. Our model consists of a single denser coronal loop, embedded in a plasma with dipolar force-free magnetic field with a constant alpha-parameter. For the loop with no sigmoidity, we find that the numerically determined oscillation period of the fundamental kink mode matches the theoretical period calculated using WKB theory. In contrast, with increasing sigmoidity of the loop, the actual period is increasingly smaller than the one estimated by WKB theory. Translated through coronal seismology, increasing sigmoidity results in magnetic field estimates which are increasingly shifting towards higher values, and even surpassing the average value for the highest alpha value considered. Nevertheless, the estimated range of the coronal magnetic field value lies within the mimimal/maximal limits, proving the robustness coronal seismology. We propose that the discrepancy in the estimations of the absolute value of the force-free magnetic field could be exploited seismologically to determine the free energy of coronal loops, if averages of the internal magnetic field and density can be reliably estimated by other methods.

Potential field extrapolations are widely used as minimum-energy models for the Suns coronal magnetic field. As the reference to which other magnetic fields are compared, they have -- by any reasonable definition -- no global (signed) magnetic helici ty. Here we investigate the internal topological structure that is not captured by the global helicity integral, by splitting it into individual field line helicities. These are computed using potential field extrapolations from magnetogram observations over Solar Cycle 24, as well as for a simple illustrative model of a single bipolar region in a dipolar background. We find that localised patches of field line helicity arise primarily from linking between strong active regions and their overlying field, so that the total unsigned helicity correlates with the product of photospheric and open fluxes. Within each active region, positive and negative helicity may be unbalanced, but the signed helicity is only around a tenth of the unsigned helicity. Interestingly, in Cycle 24, there is a notable peak in unsigned helicity caused by a single large active region. On average, the total unsigned helicity at the resolution considered is approximately twice the typical signed helicity of a single real active region, according to non-potential models in the literature.

The effects of acoustic wave absorption, mode conversion and transmission by a sunspot on the helioseismic inferences are widely discussed, but yet accounting for them has proved difficult for lack of a consistent framework within helioseismic modell ing. Here, following a discussion of problems and issues that the near-surface magnetohydrodynamics hosts through a complex interplay of radiative transfer, measurement issues, and MHD wave processes, I present some possibilities entirely from observational analyses based on imaging spectropolarimetry. In particular, I present some results on wave evolution as a function of observation height and inclination of magnetic field to the vertical, derived from a high-cadence imaging spectropolarimetric observation of a sunspot and its surroundings using the instrument IBIS (NSO/Sac Peak, USA). These observations were made in magnetically sensitive (Fe I 6173 A) and insensitive (Fe I 7090 A) upper photospheric absorption lines. Wave travel time contributions from within the photospheric layers of a sunspot estimated here would then need to be removed from the inversion modelling procedure, that does not have the provision to account for them.
EIT waves are freely-propagating global pulses in the low corona which are strongly associated with the initial evolution of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). They are thought to be large-amplitude, fast-mode magnetohydrodynamic waves initially driven b y the rapid expansion of a CME in the low corona. An EIT wave was observed on 6 July 2012 to impact an adjacent trans-equatorial loop system which then exhibited a decaying oscillation as it returned to rest. Observations of the loop oscillations were used to estimate the magnetic field strength of the loop system by studying the decaying oscillation of the loop, measuring the propagation of ubiquitous transverse waves in the loop and extrapolating the magnetic field from observed magnetograms. Observations from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO/AIA) and the Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter (CoMP) were used to study the event. An Empirical Mode Decomposition analysis was used to characterise the oscillation of the loop system in CoMP Doppler velocity and line width and in AIA intensity. The loop system was shown to oscillate in the 2nd harmonic mode rather than at the fundamental frequency, with the seismological analysis returning an estimated magnetic field strength of ~5.5+/-1.5 G. This compares to the magnetic field strength estimates of ~1-9 G and ~3-9 G found using the measurements of transverse wave propagation and magnetic field extrapolation respectively.

Recent observations have revealed the ubiquitous presence of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and oscillations in the solar corona. The aim of this review is to present recent progress in the observational study of four types of wave (or oscillation) phenomena mainly occurring in active region coronal loops, including (i) flare-induced slow mode oscillations, (ii) fast kink mode oscillations, (iii) propagating slow magnetoacoustic waves, and (iv) ubiquitous propagating kink (Alfvenic) waves. This review not only comprehensively outlines various aspects of these waves and coronal seismology, but also highlights the topics that are newly emerging or hotly debated, thus can provide readers a useful guidance on further studies of their interested topics.
