We present anisotropic transport and optical spectroscopy studies on EuCd_2As_2. The measurements reveal that EuCd_2As_2 is a low carrier density semimetal with moderate anisotropic resistivity ratio. The charge carriers experience very strong scattering from Eu magnetic moments, resulting in a Kondo-like increase of resistivity at low temperature. Below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature at $T_N$= 9.5 K, the resistivity drops sharply due to the reduced scattering from the ordered Eu moments. Nevertheless, the anisotropic ratio of $rho_c/rho_{ab}$ keeps increasing, suggesting that the antiferromagnetic coupling is along the c-axis. The optical spectroscopy measurement further reveals, besides an overdamped reflectance plasma edge at low energy, a strong coupling between phonon and electronic continuum. Our study suggests that EuCd_2As_2 is a promising candidate displaying intriguing interplay among charge, magnetism and the underlying crystal lattice.

The anisotropic-exchange spin-1/2 model on a triangular lattice has been used to describe the rare-earth chalcogenides, which may have exotic ground states. We investigate the quantum phase diagram of the model by using the projected entangled pair s tate (PEPS) method, and compare it to the classical phase diagram. Besides two stripe-ordered phase, and the 120$^circ$ state, there is also a multi-textbf{Q} phase. We identify the multi-textbf{Q} phase as a $Z_{2}$ vortex state. No quantum spin liquid state is found in the phase diagram, contrary to the previous DMRG calculations.
Magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, and Hall effect have been investigated on single-crystalline Ce_2PdSi_3. This compound is shown to order antiferromagnetically below Neel temperature (T_N) ~3 K. The Sommerfe ld coefficient far below T_N is found to be about 110 mJ/K^2 mol Ce, which indicates the heavy-fermion character of this compound. The transport and magnetic properties exhibit large anisotropy with an interplay between crystalline-electric-field (CEF) and Kondo effects. The sign of thermoelectric power is opposite for different directions at high temperatures and the ordinary Hall coefficient is anisotropic with opposite sign for different geometries, indicating the anisotropic Fermi surface. The CEF analysis from the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility suggests that the ground state is |+/-1/2>. The first and the second excited CEF doublet levels are found to be located at about 30 and 130 K, respectively. The Kondo temperature is estimated to be the same order as T_N, indicating the presence of a delicate competition between the Kondo effect and magnetic order.
We have performed Raman scattering investigations on the high energy magnetic excitations in a BiFeO$_3$ single crystal as a function of both temperature and laser excitation energy. A strong feature observed at 1250 cm$^{-1}$ in the Raman spectra ha s been previously assigned to two phonon overtone. We show here that its unusual frequency shift with the excitation energy and its asymmetric temperature dependent Fano lineshape reveal a strong coupling to magnetic excitations. In the same energy range, we have also identified the two-magnon excitation with a temperature dependence very similar to $alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ hematite.
We report the observation of an extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) in HoBi with a large magnetic moment from Ho f-electrons. Neutron scattering is used to determine the magnetic wave vectors across several metamagnetic (MM) transitions on the phase diag ram of HoBi. Unlike other magnetic rare-earth monopnictides, the field dependence of resistivity in HoBi is non-monotonic and reveals clear signatures of every metamagnetic transition in the low-temperature and low-field regime, at T < 2 K and H < 2.3 T. The XMR appears at H > 2.3 T after all the metamagnetic transitions are complete and the system is spin-polarized by the external magnetic field. The existence of an onset field for XMR and the intimate connection between magnetism and transport in HoBi are unprecedented among the magnetic rare-earth monopnictides. Therefore, HoBi provides a unique opportunity to understand the electrical transport in magnetic XMR semimetals.

We present a comparative study of CoO2 layers in the Bi-misfit and NaxCoO2 cobaltates. Co NMR measures the intrinsic susceptibility of the Co layers and is not affected by spurious contributions. At low dopings where room-temperature thermopower (TEP ) is large, Curie-Weiss susceptibilities are observed in both materials. But NMR and muSR experiments find neither charge nor spin order down to low temperatures in Bi-misfit, in contrast to the case of NaxCoO2. This demonstrates that metallicity, charge and magnetic orders are specific of the Na layers in NaxCoO2 whereas strong correlations are generic of the cobaltates physics and could explain the large TEP.
