The cooperative behavior of quantum impurities on 2D materials, such as graphene and bilayer graphene, is characterized by a non-trivial competition between screening (Kondo effect), and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) magnetism. In addition, due to the small density of states at the Fermi level, impurities may not couple to the conduction electrons at all, behaving as free moments. Employing a recently developed {em{exact}} numerical method to study multi-impurity lattice systems, we obtain non-perturbative results that dramatically depart from expectations based on the conventional RKKY theory. At half-filling and for weak coupling, impurities remain in the local moment regime when they are on opposite sublattices, up to a critical value of the interactions when they start coupling anti-ferromagnetically with correlations that decay very slowly with inter-impurity distance. At finite doping, away from half-filling, ferromagnetism is completely absent and the physics is dominated by a competition between anti-ferromagnetism and Kondo effect. In bilayer graphene, impurities on opposite layers behave as free moments, unless the interaction is of the order of the hopping or larger.

To clarify the role of the Kondo effect in screening local magnetic moments of Plutonium 5f--electrons as well as its competition to the RKKY interactions we use a combination of density functional theory with static Hartree Fock and dynamic Hubbard 1 approximations to calculate the strength of both the Kondo exchange, J_K, and of the RKKY exchange, J_RKKY, couplings for Pu{1-x}Am{x} system as a function of x. We find that J_K increases despite the atomic volume gets larger with the Am doping due to unexpected enhancement of hybridization between f and conduction electrons in the vicinity of the Fermi level. At the same time, the RKKY exchange is shown to reduce smoothly with increasing x. Our results imply that the Kondo effect should be robust against the increase in interatomic spacing of this alloy.
Geometrically frustrated quantum impurities coupled to metallic leads have been shown to exhibit rich behavior with a quantum phase transition separating Kondo screened and local moment phases. Frustration in the quantum impurity can alternatively be introduced via Kitaev-couplings between different spins of the impurity cluster. We use the Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) to study a range of systems where the quantum impurity comprising a Kitaev cluster is coupled to a bath of non-interacting fermions. The models exhibits a competition between Kitaev and Kondo dominated physics depending on whether the Kitaev couplings are greater or less than the Kondo temperature. We characterize the ground state properties of the system and determine the temperature dependence of the crossover scale for the emergence of fractionalized degrees of freedom in the model. We also demonstrate qualitatively as well as quantitatively that in the Kondo limit, the complex impurity can be mapped to an effective two-impurity system, where the emergent spin $1/2$ comprises of both Majorana and flux degrees of freedom. For a tetrahedral-shaped Kitaev cluster, an extra orbital degree of freedom closely related to a flux degree of freedom remains unscreened even in the presence of both Heisenberg and Kondo interactions.
We show that the paradigmatic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) description of two local magnetic moments coupled to propagating electrons breaks down in helical Luttinger Liquids when the electron interaction is stronger than some critical value. In this novel regime, the Kondo effect overwhelms the RKKY interaction over all macroscopic inter-impurity distances. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of the helicity (realized, for instance, at edges of a time-reversal invariant topological insulator) and does not take place in usual (non-helical) Luttinger Liquids.
We study the ground-state properties of an extended periodic Anderson model to understand the role of Hunds coupling between localized and itinerant electrons using the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. By calculating the von Neumann en tropies we show that two phase transitions occur and two new phases appear as the hybridization is increased in the symmetric half-filled case due to the competition between Kondo-effect and Hunds coupling. In the intermediate phase, which is bounded by two critical points, we found a dimerized ground state, while in the other spatially homogeneous phases the ground state is Haldane-like and Kondo-singlet-like, respectively. We also determine the entanglement spectrum and the entanglement diagram of the system by calculating the mutual information thereby clarifying the structure of each phase.
In a Kondo lattice, the spin exchange coupling between a local spin and the conduction electrons acquires nonlocal contributions due to conduction electron scattering from surrounding local spins and the subsequent RKKY interaction. It leads to a hit herto unrecognized interference of Kondo screening and the RKKY interaction beyond the Doniach scenario. We develop a renormalization group theory for the RKKY-modified Kondo vertex. The Kondo temperature, $T_K(y)$, is suppressed in a universal way, controlled by the antiferromagnetic RKKY coupling parameter $y$. Complete spin screening ceases to exist beyond a critical RKKY strength $y_c$ even in the absence of magnetic ordering. At this breakdown point, $T_K(y)$ remains nonzero and is not defined for larger RKKY couplings, $y>y_c$. The results are in quantitative agreement with STM spectroscopy experiments on tunable two-impurity Kondo systems. The possible implications for quantum critical scenarios in heavy-fermion systems are discussed.
