Ab initio calculations provide direct access to the properties of pure neutron systems that are challenging to study experimentally. In addition to their importance for fundamental physics, their properties are required as input for effective field theories of the strong interaction. In this work, we perform auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations of the ground and first excited state of two neutrons in a finite box, considering a simple contact potential as well as chiral effective field theory interactions. We compare the results against exact diagonalizations and present a detailed analysis of the finite-volume effects, whose understanding is crucial for determining observables from the calculated energies. Using the Luscher formula, we extract the low-energy S-wave scattering parameters from ground- and excited-state energies for different box sizes.

We consider the problem of including $Lambda$ hyperons into the ab initio framework of nuclear lattice effective field theory. In order to avoid large sign oscillations in Monte Carlo simulations, we make use of the fact that the number of hyperons i s typically small compared to the number of nucleons in the hypernuclei of interest. This allows us to use the impurity lattice Monte Carlo method, where the minority species of fermions in the full nuclear Hamiltonian is integrated out and treated as a worldline in Euclidean projection time. The majority fermions (nucleons) are treated as explicit degrees of freedom, with their mutual interactions described by auxiliary fields. This is the first application of the impurity lattice Monte Carlo method to systems where the majority particles are interacting. Here, we show how the impurity Monte Carlo method can be applied to compute the binding energy of the light hypernuclei. In this exploratory work we use spin-independent nucleon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon interactions to test the computational power of the method. We find that the computational effort scales approximately linearly in the number of nucleons. The results are very promising for future studies of larger hypernuclear systems using chiral effective field theory and realistic hyperon-nucleon interactions, as well as applications to other quantum many-body systems.
We compute the matrix elements for elastic scattering of dark matter (DM) particles off light nuclei ($^2$H, $^3$H, $^3$He, $^4$He and $^6$Li) using quantum Monte Carlo methods. We focus on scalar-mediated DM-nucleus interactions and use scalar curre nts obtained to next-to-leading order in chiral effective theory. The nuclear ground states are obtained from a phenomenological nuclear Hamiltonian that includes the Argonne $v_{18}$ two-body interaction and the three-body Urbana IX interaction. Within this approach, we study the impact of one- and two-body currents and discuss the size of nuclear uncertainties, including for the first time two-body effects in $A=4$ and $A=6$ systems. Our results provide the nuclear structure input needed to assess the sensitivity of future experimental searches of (light) dark matter using light nuclei, such as $^3$He and $^4$He.
The onset of hyperons in the core of neutron stars and the consequent softening of the equation of state have been questioned for a long time. Controversial theoretical predictions and recent astrophysical observations of neutron stars are the ground s for the so-called hyperon puzzle. We calculate the equation of state and the neutron star mass-radius relation of an infinite systems of neutrons and $Lambda$ particles by using the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm. We find that the three-body hyperon-nucleon interaction plays a fundamental role in the softening of the equation of state and for the consequent reduction of the predicted maximum mass. We have considered two different models of three-body force that successfully describe the binding energy of medium mass hypernuclei. Our results indicate that they give dramatically different results on the maximum mass of neutron stars, not necessarily incompatible with the recent observation of very massive neutron stars. We conclude that stronger constraints on the hyperon-neutron force are necessary in order to properly assess the role of hyperons in neutron stars.
The structures of the hyperon resonance $Lambda (1405)$ and the scalar mesons $sigma$, $f_{0}(980)$, and $a_{0}(980)$ are investigated based on the coupled-channels chiral dynamics with finite volume effect. The finite volume effect is utilized to ex tract the coupling constant, compositeness, and mean squared distance between two constituents of a Feshbach resonance state as well as a stable bound state. In this framework, the real-valued size of the resonance can be defined from the downward shift of the resonance pole according to the decreasing finite box size $L$ on a given closed channel. As a result, we observe that, when putting the $bar{K}N$ and $Kbar{K}$ channels into a finite box while other channels being unchanged, the poles of the higher $Lambda (1405)$ and $f_{0}(980)$ move to lower energies while other poles do not show downward mass shift, which implies large $bar{K}N$ and $Kbar{K}$ components inside higher $Lambda (1405)$ and $f_{0}(980)$, respectively. Extracting structures of $Lambda (1405)$ and $f_{0}(980)$ in our method, we find that the compositeness of $bar{K}N$ ($Kbar{K}$) inside $Lambda (1405)$ [$f_{0}(980)$] is 0.82-1.03 (0.73-0.97) and the mean distance between two constituents is evaluated as 1.7-1.9 fm (2.6-3.0 fm).
Pionless effective field theory in a finite volume (FVEFT$_{pi!/}$) is investigated as a framework for the analysis of multi-nucleon spectra and matrix elements calculated in lattice QCD (LQCD). By combining FVEFT$_{pi!/}$ with the stochastic variati onal method, the spectra of nuclei with atomic number $Ain{2,3}$ are matched to existing finite-volume LQCD calculations at heavier-than-physical quark masses corresponding to a pion mass $m_pi=806$ MeV, thereby enabling infinite-volume binding energies to be determined using infinite-volume variational calculations. Based on the variational wavefunctions that are constructed in this approach, the finite-volume matrix elements of various local operators are computed in FVEFT$_{pi!/}$ and matched to LQCD calculations of the corresponding QCD operators in the same volume, thereby determining the relevant one and two-body EFT counterterms and enabling an extrapolation of the LQCD matrix elements to infinite volume. As examples, the scalar, tensor, and axial matrix elements are considered, as well as the magnetic moments and the isovector longitudinal momentum fraction.
