We investigate the influence of a stochastically fluctuating step-barrier potential on bimolecular reaction rates by exact analytical theory and stochastic simulations. We demonstrate that the system exhibits a new resonant reaction behavior with rate enhancement if an appropriately defined fluctuation decay length is of the order of the system size. Importantly, we find that in the proximity of resonance the standard reciprocal additivity law for diffusion and surface reaction rates is violated due to the dynamical coupling of multiple kinetic processes. Together, these findings may have important repercussions on the correct interpretation of various kinetic reaction problems in complex systems, as, e.g., in biomolecular association or catalysis.

The kinetic processes in nanoparticle-based catalysis are dominated by large fluctuations and spatiotemporal heterogeneities, in particular for diffusion-influenced reactions which are far from equilibrium. Here, we report results from particle-resol ved reaction-diffusion simulations of steady-state bimolecular reactions catalyzed on the surface of a single, perfectly spherical nanoparticle. We study various reactant adsorption and diffusion regimes, in particular considering the crowding effects of the reaction products. Our simulations reveal that fluctuations, significant coverage cross-correlations, transient self-poisoning, related domain formation, and excluded-volume effects on the nanoparticle surface lead to a complex kinetic behavior, sensitively tuned by the balance between adsorption affinity, mixed 2D and 3D diffusion, and chemical reaction propensity. The adsorbed products are found to influence the correlations and fluctuations, depending on overall reaction speed, thereby going beyond conventional steric (e.g., Langmuir-like) product inhibition mechanisms. We summarize our findings in a state diagram depicting the nonlinear kinetic regimes by an apparent surface reaction order in dependence of the intrinsic reaction propensity and adsorption strength. Our study using a simple, perfectly spherical, and inert nanocatalyst demonstrates that spatiotemporal heterogeneities are intrinsic to the reaction-diffusion problem and not necessarily caused by any dynamical surface effects from the catalyst (e.g., dynamical surface reconstruction), as often argued.
A Brownian particle moving across a porous membrane subject to an oscillating force exhibits stochastic resonance with properties which strongly depend on the geometry of the confining cavities on the two sides of the membrane. Such a manifestation o f stochastic resonance requires neither energetic nor entropic barriers, and can thus be regarded as a purely geometric effect. The magnitude of this effect is sensitive to the geometry of both the cavities and the pores, thus leading to distinctive optimal synchronization conditions.
The transition states and dividing surfaces used to find rate constants for bimolecular reactions are shown to undergo qualitative changes, known as Morse bifurcations, and to exist for a large range of energies, not just immediately above the critic al energy for first connection between reactants and products. Specifically, we consider capture between two molecules and the associated transition states for the case of non-zero angular momentum and general attitudes. The capture between an atom and a diatom, and then a general molecule are presented, providing concrete examples of Morse bifurcations of transition states and dividing surfaces. The reduction of the $n$-body systems representing the reactions is discussed and reviewed with comments on the difficulties associated with choosing appropriate charts and the global geometry of the reduced spaces.
In many biological situations, a species arriving from a remote source diffuses in a domain confined between two parallel surfaces until it finds a binding partner. Since such a geometric shape falls in between two- and three-dimensional settings, th e behavior of the macroscopic reaction rate and its dependence on geometric parameters are not yet understood. Modeling the geometric setup by a capped cylinder with a concentric disk-like reactive region on one of the lateral surfaces, we provide an exact semi-analytical solution of the steady-state diffusion equation and compute the diffusive flux onto the reactive region. We explore the dependence of the macroscopic reaction rate on the geometric parameters and derive asymptotic results in several limits. Using the self-consistent approximation, we also obtain a simple fully explicit formula for the reaction rate that exhibits a transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional behavior as the separation distance between lateral surfaces increases. Biological implications of these results are discussed.

Anomalous short- and long-time self-diffusion of non-overlapping fractal particles on a percolation cluster with spreading dimension $1.67(2)$ is studied by dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. As reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 097801 (2015), the diso rdered phase formed by these particles is that of an unconfined, homogeneous and monodisperse fluid in fractal space. During particle diffusion in thermodynamic equilibrium, the mean squared chemical displacement increases as a nonlinear power of time, with an exponent of $0.96(1)$ at short times and $0.63(1)$ at long times. At finite packing fractions the steric hindrance among nearest neighbor particles leads to a sub-diffusive regime that separates short-time anomalous diffusion from long-time anomalous diffusion. Particle localization is observed over eight decades in time for packing fractions of $sim 60%$ and higher.
