We report on a systematic study of the thermodynamic, electronic and charge transport properties of high-quality single crystals of BaNiS$_2$, the metallic end-member of the quasi-twodimensional BaCo$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$S$_2$ system characterized by a metal-insulator transition at $x_{cr}=0.22$. Our analysis of magnetoresistivity and specific heat data consistently suggests a picture of compensated semimetal with two hole- and one electron-bands, where electron-phonon scattering dominates charge transport and the minority holes exhibit, below $sim$100 K, a very large mobility, $mu_hsim$ 15000 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$, which is explained by a Dirac-like band. Evidence of unconventional metallic properties is given by an intriguing crossover of the resistivity from a Bloch-Gruneisen regime to a linear$-T$ regime occurring at 2 K and by a strong linear term in the paramagnetic susceptibility above 100 K. We discuss the possibility that these anomalies reflect a departure from conventional Fermi-liquid properties in presence of short-range AF fluctuations and of a large Hund coupling.

We report on the emergent magnetic state of (111)-oriented CoCr2O4 ultrathin films sandwiched by Al2O3 in the quantum confined geometry. At the two-dimensional crossover, polarized neutron reflectometry reveals an anomalous enhancement of the total m agnetization compared to the bulk value. Synchrotron x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) demonstrates the appearance of long-range ferromagnetic ordering of spins on both Co and Cr sublattices. Brillouin function analyses further corroborates that the observed phenomena are due to the strongly altered magnetic frustration, manifested by the onset of a Yafet-Kittel type ordering as the new ground state in the ultrathin limit, which is unattainable in the bulk.
Mott insulators are commonly pictured with electrons localized on lattice sites. Their low-energy degrees of freedom involve spins only. Here we observe emerging charge degrees of freedom in a molecule-based Mott insulator $kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SC N)$_2$Br, resulting in a quantum dipole liquid state. Electrons localized on molecular dimer lattice sites form electric dipoles that do not order at low temperatures and fluctuate with frequency detected experimentally in our Raman spectroscopy experiments. The heat capacity and Raman scattering response are consistent with a scenario where the composite spin and electric dipole degrees of freedom remain fluctuating down to the lowest measured temperatures.
The crystal structure of layered metal IrTe2 is determined using single-crystal x-ray diffraction. At T=220 K, it exhibits Ir and Te dimers forming a valence-bond crystal. Electronic structure calculations reveal an intriguing quasi-two-dimensional e lectronic state, with planes of reduced density of states cutting diagonally through the Ir and Te layers. These planes are formed by the Ir and Te dimers, which exhibit a signature of covalent bonding character development. Evidence for significant charge disproportionation among the dimerized and non-dimerized Ir (charge order) is also presented.

We investigate the phases of the ionic Hubbard model in a two-dimensional square lattice using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC). At half-filling, when the interaction strength or the staggered potential dominate we find Mott and band insulators , respectively. When these two energies are of the same order we find a metallic region. Charge and magnetic structure factors demonstrate the presence of antiferromagnetism only in the Mott region, although the externally imposed density modulation is present everywhere in the phase diagram. Away from half-filling, other insulating phases are found. Kinetic energy correlations do not give clear signals for the existence of a bond-ordered phase.
An important problem in contemporary physics concerns quantum-critical fluctuations in metals. A scaling function for the momentum, frequency, temperature and magnetic field dependence of the correlation function near a 2D-ferromagnetic quantum-criti cal point (QCP) is constructed, and its singularities are determined by comparing to the recent calculations of the correlation functions of the dissipative quantum XY model (DQXY). The calculations are motivated by the measured properties of the metallic compound YFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, which is a realization of the DQXY model in 2D. The frequency, temperature and magnetic field dependence of the scaling function as well as the singularities measured in the experiments are given by the theory without adjustable exponents. The same model is applicable to the superconductor-insulator transitions, classes of metallic AFM-QCPs, and as fluctuations of the loop-current ordered state in hole-doped cuprates. The results presented here lend credence to the solution found for the 2D-DQXY model, and its applications in understanding quantum-critical properties of diverse systems.
