We report calculations of the electronic structure, vibrational properties and transport for the p-type semiconductors, SrAg$Ch$F ($Ch$=S, Se and Te). We find soft phonons with low frequency optical branches intersecting the acoustic modes below 50 $cm^{-1}$, indicative of a material with low thermal conductivity. The bands at and near the valence band maxima are highly two dimensional, which leads to high thermopowers even at high carrier concentrations, which is a combination that suggests good thermoelectric performance. These materials may be regarded as bulk realizations of superlattice thermoelectrics.

In this study, we perform a comparative theoretical study on the thermoelectric performance of materials with Cu$Ch_4$ ($Ch=$ S, Se) tetrahedra, including famous thermoelectric materials BiCuSeO and tetrahedrite Cu$_{12}$Sb$_4$S$_{13}$, by means of f irst-principles calculations. By comparing these electronic band structures, we find that many of these materials possess a Cu-$t_{2g}$ band structure consisting of quasi-one-dimensional band dispersions and the isotropic (two-dimensional for layered compounds) band dispersion near the valence-band edge. Therefore, the key factors for the thermoelectric performance are the anisotropy of the former band dispersion and the degeneracy of these two kinds of band dispersions. We also find that a large extension of the chalcogen orbitals often improves their thermoelectric performance by improving these two factors or by going beyond such a basic band structure through a large alternation of its shape. Such a large extension of the chalcogen orbitals might partially originate from the anisotropic Cu-$Ch$ bond geometry of a tetrahedron. Our study reveals interesting similarities and differences of materials with Cu$Ch_4$, which provides important knowledge for a future search of high-performance thermoelectric materials.
BiCh2-based superconductors (Ch: S, Se) are a new series of layered superconductor. However, mechanisms for the emergence of superconductivity in BiCh2-based superconductors have not been clarified. In this study, we have investigated crystal structu re of two series of optimally-doped BiCh2-based superconductors, Ce1-xNdxO0.5F0.5BiS2 and LaO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-ySey)2, using powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction in order to reveal the relationship between crystal structure and superconducting properties of the BiCh2-based family. We have found that an enhancement of in-plane chemical pressure would commonly induce bulk superconductivity in both systems. Furthermore, we have revealed that superconducting transition temperature for REO0.5F0.5BiCh2 superconductors could universally be determined by degree of in-plane chemical pressure.
Hybrid halide perovskites exhibit nearly 20% power conversion efficiency, but the origin of their high efficiency is still unknown. Here, we compute the shift current, a dominant mechanism of bulk photovoltaic (PV) effect for ferroelectric photovolta ics, in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_{3-x}$Cl$_{x}$ from first principles. We find that these materials give approximately three times larger shift current PV response to near-IR and visible light than the prototypical ferroelectric photovoltaic BiFeO$_3$. The molecular orientations of CH$_3$NH$_3^{+}$ can strongly affect the corresponding PbI$_3$ inorganic frame so as to alter the magnitude of the shift current response. Specifically, configurations with dipole moments aligned in parallel distort the inorganic PbI$_3$ frame more significantly than configurations with near net zero dipole, yielding a larger shift current response. Furthermore, we explore the effect of Cl substitution on shift current, and find that Cl substitution at the equatorial site induces a larger response than does substitution at the apical site.
NbBiCh$_3$ (Ch = S, Se) misfit-layered superconducting single crystals were successfully grown using a CsCl/KCl flux for the first time. The obtained crystals had a well-developed habit parallel to the c-plane with a typical width of 1-2 mm and thick ness of 10-40 um. The superconducting transition temperatures with zero resistivity of NbBiS$_3$ single crystals obtained from the nominal composition of Nb0.9Bi1.2S3 was 0.31 K, and that value of the NbBiSe$_3$ single crystals grown from the stoichiometry composition (NbBiSe$_3$) was 2.3 K. Sharp decreases in electric resistivity and magnetic susceptibility at approximately 3 K suggested a possible superconducting transition temperature of NbBiSe$_3$. The normal-state anisotropy values of grown NbBiS$_3$ and NbBiSe$_3$ single crystals were 2.2-2.4 and 1.5-1.6, respectively.
The electronic band structure and elastic properties of the Cd${}_{16}$Se${}_{15}$Te solid state solution in the framework of the density functional theory calculations are investigated. The structure of the sample is constructed on the original bina ry compound CdSe, which crystallizes in the cubic phase. Based on the electronic band structure, the effective mass of electron, heavy hole, light hole, spin-orbit effective masses and reduced mass in G point are calculated. In addition, the exciton binding energy, refractive index and high-frequency dielectric constant are calculated. The Young modulus, shear modulus, bulk modulus and Poisson ratio are calculated theoretically. Based on the results of elastic coefficients, the value of acoustic velocity and Debye temperature is obtained.
