The recent discovery by Bachetti et al. (2014) of a pulsar in M82 that can reach luminosities of up to 10^40 ergs s^-1, a factor of ~100 the Eddington luminosity for a 1.4 Msol compact object, poses a challenge for accretion physics. In order to better understand the nature of this source and its duty cycle, and in the light of several physical models that have been subsequently published, we conduct a spectral and temporal analysis of the 0.5-8 keV X-ray emission from this source from 15 years of Chandra observations. We fit the Chandra spectra of the pulsar with a power-law model and a disk black body model, subjected to interstellar absorption in M82. We carefully assess for the effect of pile-up in our observations, where 4/19 observations have a pile-up fraction >10%, which we account for during spectral modeling with a convolution model. When fitted with a power-law model, the average photon index when the source is at high luminosity (L_X>10^39 ergs s^-1) is Gamma=1.33+/-0.15. For the disk black body model, the average temperature is T=3.24+/-0.65 keV, consistent with other luminous X-ray pulsars. We also investigated the inclusion of a soft excess component and spectral break, finding that the spectra are also consistent with these features common to luminous X-ray pulsars. In addition, we present spectral analysis from NuSTAR over the 3-50 keV range where we have isolated the pulsed component. We find that the pulsed emission in this band is best fit by a power-law with a high-energy cut-off, where Gamma=0.6+/-0.3 and E_C=14^{+5}_{-3} keV. While the pulsar has previously been identified as a transient, we find from our longer-baseline study that it has been remarkably active over the 15-year period, where for 9/19 (47%) observations that we analyzed, the pulsar appears to be emitting at a luminosity in excess of 10^39 ergs s^-1, greater than 10 times its Eddington limit.

We have analysed the spectra and the variability of individual X-ray sources in the M-81 field using data from the available ROSAT-PSPC and ROSAT-HRI observations of this nearby spiral galaxy. Here we present the results on the second brightest sourc e in the field (X-9 - Fabbiano, 1988 ApJ 325 544), whose identification and interpretation is still unclear. Our work includes the study of the shape of X-9 from HRI data, the light curve and hardness ratio evolution, and the spectral analysis.
We present the first coordinated soft and hard 0.3-80 keV X-ray campaign of the extragalactic supernova SN 2014C in the first $sim$2307 d of its evolution. SN 2014C initially appeared to be an ordinary type Ib explosion but evolved into a strongly-in teracting hydrogen-rich type IIn SN over $sim1 rm{yr}$. We observed signatures of interaction with a dense medium across the X-ray spectrum, which revealed the presence of a $sim 1-2 rm{M}_{odot}$ shell of material at $sim6times10^{16} rm{cm}$ from the progenitor. This finding challenges current understanding of hydrogen-poor core-collapse progenitor evolution. Potential scenarios to interpret these observations include (i) the ejection of the hydrogen envelope by the progenitor star in the centuries prior to the explosion; (ii) interaction of the fast Wolf-Rayet (WR) star wind with the slow, dense wind of the Red Super Giant (RSG) phase, with an anomalously short WR phase.
Previous X-ray spectral analysis has revealed an increasing number of AGNs with high accretion rates where an outflow with a mildly relativistic velocity originates from the inner accretion disk. Here we report the detection of a new ultra-fast outfl ow (UFO) with a velocity of $v_{rm out}=0.319^{+0.005}_{-0.008}c$ in addition to a relativistic disk reflection component in a poorly studied NLS1 WKK~4438, based on archival ustar and suzaku observations. The spectra of both suzaku and ustar observations show an Fe~textsc{xxvi} absorption feature and the suzaku data also show evidence for an Ar~textsc{xviii} with the same blueshift. A super-solar argon abundance ($Z^{prime}_{rm Ar}>6Z_{odot}$) and a slight iron over-abundance ($Z^{prime}_{rm Fe}=2.6^{+1.9}_{-2.0}Z_{odot}$) are found in our spectral modelling. Based on Monte-Carlo simulations, the detection of the UFO is estimated to be around at 3$sigma$ significance. The fast wind most likely arises from a radius of $geq20r_g$ away from the central black hole. The disk is accreting at a high Eddington ratio ($L_{rm bol}=0.4-0.7L_{rm Edd}$). The mass outflow rate of the UFO is comparable with the disk mass inflow rate ($dot M_{rm out}>30%dot M_{rm in}$), assuming a maximum covering factor. The kinetic power of the wind might not be high enough to have influence in AGN feedback ($dot E_{rm wind}/L_{rm bol}approx 3-5%$) due to a relatively small column density ($12^{+9}_{-4}times10^{22}$~cm$^{-2}$). However note that both the inferred velocity and the column density could be lower limits owing to the low viewing angle ($i=23^{+3}_{-2}$$^{circ}$).

We report variability of the X-ray source, X-7, in NGC 6946, during a 60 ksec Chandra observation when the count rate decreased by a factor of ~1.5 in ~5000 secs. Spectral fitting of the high and low count rate segments of the light curve reveal that the simplest and most probable interpretation is that the X-ray spectra are due to disk black body emission with an absorbing hydrogen column density equal to the Galactic value of 2.1 X 10^{21} cm^{-2}. During the variation, the inner disk temperature decreased from ~0.29 to ~0.26 keV while the inner disk radius remained constant at ~6 X 10^8 cm. This translates into a luminosity variation from 3.8 to 2.8 X 10^{39} ergs cm^{-2} sec^{-1} and a black hole mass of ~400 solar masses. More complicated models like assuming intrinsic absorption and/or the addition of a power-law component imply a higher luminosity and a larger black hole mass. Even if the emission is beamed by a factor of ~5, the size of the emitting region would be > 2.7 X 10^8 cm implying a black hole mass > 180 solar masses. Thus, these spectral results provide strong evidence that the mass of the black hole in this source is definitely > 100 solar masses and more probably ~400 solar masses.
We report on detailed analysis of the hard X-ray and GeV gamma-ray spectra of LS 5039, one of the brightest gamma-ray binary system in the Galaxy. The NuSTAR observation covering its entire orbit in 2016 allowed us for the first time to study the orb ital variability of the spectrum above 10 keV. The hard X-ray spectrum is well described with a single power-law component up to 78 keV. The X-ray flux showed a slight deviation from those observed previously with Suzaku in 2007. The fast X-ray brightening observed with Suzaku, around the inferior conjunction, was not observed in this observation. We also analyzed 11 years of Fermi Large Area Telescope data of LS 5039. The GeV spectrum around the inferior conjunction was well described with two non-thermal components; a power law with a photon index of $sim 3$ and a cut-off power law with a cutoff energy of $sim 2$ GeV. The orbital flux variability also changed gradually around a few GeV. These results indicate that there are two emission components in the GeV band, and the dominant component above $sim 1$ GeV does not depend on the orbital phase. By combining these results, we update the spectral energy distribution of LS 5039 with the highest available statistics. Theoretical models proposed so far cannot explain the obtained multi-wavelength spectrum, especially the emission from $sim$ 1 MeV to $sim$ 400 MeV, and we discuss a possibility that particle acceleration in LS 5039 is different from the shock acceleration.
