We report on the electronic ground state of a layered perovskite vanadium oxide Sr$_2$VO$_4$ studied by the combined use of synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction (SR-XRD) and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($mu$SR) techniques, where $mu$SR measurements were extended down to 30 mK. We found an intermediate orthorhombic phase between $T_{rm c2} sim$~130 K and $T_{rm c1} sim$~100 K, whereas a tetragonal phase appears for $T > T_{rm c2}$ and $T < T_{rm c1}$. The absence of long-range magnetic order was confirmed by $mu$SR at the reentrant tetragonal phase below $T_{rm c1}$, where the relative enhancement in the $c$-axis length versus that of the $a$-axis length was observed. However, no clear indication of the lowering of the tetragonal lattice symmetry with superlattice modulation, which is expected in the orbital order state with superstructure of $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals, was observed by SR-XRD below $T_{rm c1}$. Instead, it was inferred from $mu$SR that a magnetic state developed below $T_{rm c0} sim$~10 K, which was characterized by the highly inhomogeneous and fluctuating local magnetic fields down to 30 mK. We argue that the anomalous magnetic ground state below $T_{rm c0}$ originates from the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations.

We investigate the crystal structure and lattice vibrations of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ by a combined phonon Raman scattering and x-ray powder diffraction experiment under pressures up to $66$ GPa and room temperature. Density functional theory (DFT) and $ab$-i nitio lattice dynamics calculations were also carried out. A first-order structural phase transition associated with an $8$ % collapse of the $c$-axis is observed at high pressures, with phase coexistence being observed between $sim 40$ and $55$ GPa. At lower pressures, lattice and phonon anomalies were observed, reflecting crossovers between isostructural competing states. A critical pressure of $P_1=17$ GPa is associated with: (i) a reduction of lattice volume compressibility and a change of behavior of the tetragonal $c/a$ ratio take place above $P_1$; (ii) a four-fold symmetry-breaking lattice strain associated with lattice disorder; (iii) disappearance of two Raman active modes (at $sim 180$ and $sim 260$ cm$^{-1}$); and (iv) development of an asymmetric Fano lineshape for the $sim 390$ cm$^{-1}$ mode. DFT indicates that the phase above $P_1$ is most likely non-magnetic. Exploring the similarities between iridate and cuprate physics, we argue that these observations are consistent with the emergence of a rotational symmetry-breaking electronic instability at $P_1$, providing hints for the avoided metallization under pressure and supporting the hypothesis of possible competing orders that are detrimental to superconductivity in this family. Alternative scenarios for the transition at $P_1$ are also suggested and critically discussed. Additional phonon and lattice anomalies in the tetragonal phase are observed at $P_2=30$ and $P_3=40$ GPa, indicating further competing phases that are stabilized at high pressures.
We present a single crystal neutron diffraction study of the magnetic short-range correlations in Tb$_5$Ge$_4$ which orders antiferromagnetically below the Neel temperature $T_N$ $approx$ 92 K. Strong diffuse scattering arising from magnetic short-ra nge correlations was observed in wide temperature ranges both below and above $T_N$. The antiferromagnetic ordering in Tb$_5$Ge$_4$ can be described as strongly coupled ferromagnetic block layers in the $ac$-plane that stack along the b-axis with weak antiferromagnetic inter-layer coupling. Diffuse scattering was observed along both $a^*$ and $b^*$ directions indicating three-dimensional short-range correlations. Moreover, the $q$-dependence of the diffuse scattering is Squared-Lorentzian in form suggesting a strongly clustered magnetic state that may be related to the proposed Griffiths-like phase in Gd$_5$Ge$_4$.
We report on the optical excitation spectra in Sr$_2$VO$_4$. The phonon modes are assigned and their evolution with temperature is discussed in the frame of the different phase transitions crossed upon cooling. Besides the expected infrared-active ph onons we observe two additional excitations at about 290 cm$^{-1}$ and 840 cm$^{-1}$ which could correspond to electronic transitions of the V$^{4+}$ ions. Our experimental results are discussed in the context of recent experimental and theoretical studies of this material with a unique spin-orbital ground state.
Using high resolution X-Ray diffraction (XRD) on high purity powders, we resolved the structure and $ab$ symmetry of the intriguing compound svo$ $ from room temperature down to 20 K to an unprecedented level of accuracy. Upon cooling, this new set o f data unambiguously reveals a second order phase transition lowering the symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic at a temperature $T_{c2}=136$ K. The observation of an orthorhombic distortion of the $ab$-plane is attributed to nematic phase formation supported by local Jahn-Teller (JT) dynamical instability. At $T_{N}=105$ K, spins order and at $T_{c1}=100$ K the tetragonal structure is recovered with an elongated c-axis.
We have carried out Raman spectroscopy experiments to investigate two-magnon excitations in epitaxial thin films of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ under in-plane misfit strain. With in-plane biaxial compressi on, the energy of the two-magnon peak increases, and the peak remains observable over a wider temperature range above the Neel temperature, indicating strain-induced enhancement of the superexchange interactions between $it{J}_{eff}$ = 1/2 pseudospins. From density functional theory calculations, we have found an increase of the nearest-neighbor hopping parameter and exchange interaction with increasing biaxial compressive strain, in agreement with the experimental observations. Our experimental and theoretical results provide perspectives for systematic, theory-guided strain control of the primary exchange interactions in 5$it{d}$ transition metal oxides.
