Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the electronic structure near the Fermi level and the topological property of the Bi(111) films grown on the Bi$_2$Te$_3$(111) substrate were studied. Very different from the bulk Bi, we found another surface band near the $bar{M}$ point besides the two well-known surface bands on the Bi(111) surface. With this new surface band, the bulk valence band and the bulk conduction band of Bi can be connected by the surface states. Our band mapping revealed odd number of Fermi crossings of the surface bands, which provided a direct experimental signature that Bi(111) thin films of a certain thickness on the Bi$_2$Te$_3$(111) substrate can be topologically nontrivial in three dimension.

We report comprehensive x-ray diffraction studies of the crystal structure and epitaxy of thin films of the topological insulator Bi2Te3 grown on Si (1 1 1). The films are single crystals of high crystalline quality, which strongly depends on that of their substrates, with in-plane epitaxial relationships of Bi2Te3 [2 1 -3 0] || Si [1 -1 0] and Bi2Te3 [0 1 -1 0] || Si [1 1 -2] along which the lattices of 1x3 Bi2Te3 and 2x2 Si supercells are well matched. As the samples age, we observe loss of crystalline Bi2Te3 film thickness accompanied with roughening of the crystalline interfaces, formation of new crystalline phases as well as compositional and structural modification of the Si substrate, consistent with the diffusion of Te into the Si substrate.

We have investigated the crystal structure and the ferroelectric properties of BaTiO3 thin films with YBa2Cu3O7-d as the bottom and Au as the top electrode. Epitaxial heterostructures of YBa2Cu3O7-d and BaTiO3 were prepared by dc and rf sputtering, r espectively. The crystal structure of the films was characterised by x-ray diffraction. The ferroelectric behaviour of the BaTiO3 films was confirmed by hysteresis loop measurements using a Sawyer Tower circuit. We obtain a coercive field of 30 kV/cm and a remanent polarisation of 1.25 muC/cm. At sub-switching fields the capacitance of the films obeys a relation analogous to the Rayleigh law. This behaviour indicates an interaction of domain walls with randomly distributed pinning centres. At a field of 5 MV/m we calculate 3% contribution of irreversible domain wall motion to the total dielectric constant.
Single-crystalline transition metal films are ideal playing fields for the epitaxial growth of graphene and graphene-base materials. Graphene-silicon layered structures were successfully constructed on Ir(111) thin film on Si substrate with an yttria -stabilized zirconia buffer layer via intercalation approach. Such hetero-layered structures are compatible with current Si-based microelectronic technique, showing high promise for applications in future micro- and nano-electronic devices.
The correlation between magnetic and structural properties of Co_{2} FeAl (CFA) thin films of different thickness (10 nm<d< 100 nm) grown at room temperature on MgO-buffered Si/SiO2 substrates and annealed at 600lyxmathsym{textdegree}C has been studi ed. XRD measurements revealed an (011) out-of-plane texture growth of the films. The deduced lattice parameter increases with the film thickness. Moreover, pole figures showed no in-plane preferential growth orientation. The magneto-optical Kerr effect hysteresis loops showed the presence of a weak in-plane uniaxial anisotropy with a random easy axis direction. The coercive field measured with an applied field along the easy axis direction and the uniaxial anisotropy field increase linearly with the inverse of the CFA thickness. The microstrip line ferromagnetic resonance measurements for in-plane and perpendicular applied magnetic fields revealed that the effective magnetization and the uniaxial in-palne anisotropy field follow a linear variation versus the inverse CFA thickness. This allows deriving a perpendicular surface anisotropy coefficient of -1.86 erg/cm2
Combining various two-dimensional materials into novel van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures has been shown to lead to new emergent quantum systems. A novel heterostructure composed of a vdW topological insulator (TI) such as Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ with a q uantum spin liquid (QSL) such as $alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ is of great interest for the potential for the chiral Dirac electrons in the TI surface states to interact strongly with the fractionalized fermionic spin excitations in the QSL. We report the heteroepitaxial growth of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ thin films on $alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ as well as the characterization of their structural and electrical properties. Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ thin films with an atomically smooth and uniform surface are grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The heterostructure exhibits a preferential epitaxial relationship corresponding to $(5 times 5)-$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}/(2sqrt{3} times 2sqrt{3})R30deg-alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ commensurate supercells with a periodicity of 1.2 nm. The formation of the superlattice despite a lattice mismatch as large as 60% is attributed to the van der Waals heteroepitaxy. Magnetotransport measurements as a function of temperature show Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ films grown on $alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ are heavily $n$-doped, $n_{e}$ ~10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$, with mobility $mu$ ~450 cm$^{2}$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ at low temperatures.
