We use the Wide Field Camera 3 onboard the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain deep, high-resolution photometry of the young (age ~ 300 Myr) star cluster NGC1856 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We compare the observed colour-magnitude diagram (CMD), after having applied a correction for differential reddening, with Monte Carlo simulations of simple stellar populations (SSPs) of various ages. We find that the main sequence turn-off (MSTO) region is wider than that derived from the simulation of a single SSP. Using constraints based on the distribution of stars in the MSTO region and the red clump, we find that the CMD is best reproduced using a combination of two different SSPs with ages separated by 80 Myr (0.30 and 0.38 Gyr, respectively). However, we can not formally exclude that the width of the MSTO could be due to a range of stellar rotation velocities if the efficiency of rotational mixing is higher than typically assumed. Using a King-model fit to the surface number density profile in conjunction with dynamical evolution models, we determine the evolution of cluster mass and escape velocity from an age of 10 Myr to the present age, taking into account the possible effects of primordial mass segregation. We find that the cluster has an escape velocity Vesc ~ 17 km/s at an age of 10 Myr, and it remains high enough during a period of ~ 100 Myr to retain material ejected by slow winds of first-generation stars. Our results are consistent with the presence of an age spread in NGC1856, in contradiction to the results of Bastian & Silva-Villa (2013).

The HST/ACS colour-magnitude diagrams (CMD) of the populous LMC star cluster NGC1751 present both a broad main sequence turn-off and a dual clump of red giants. We show that the latter feature is real and associate it to the first appearance of elect ron-degeneracy in the H-exhausted cores of the cluster stars. We then apply to the NGC1751 data the classical method of star formation history (SFH) recovery via CMD reconstruction, for different radii corresponding to the cluster centre, the cluster outskirts, and the underlying LMC field. The mean SFH derived from the LMC field is taken into account during the stage of SFH-recovery in the cluster regions, in a novel approach which is shown to significantly improve the quality of the SFH results. For the cluster centre, we find a best-fitting solution corresponding to prolonged star formation for a for a timespan of 460 Myr, instead of the two peaks separated by 200 Myr favoured by a previous work based on isochrone fitting. Remarkably, our global best-fitting solution provides an excellent fit to the data - with chi^2 and residuals close to the theoretical minimum - reproducing all the CMD features including the dual red clump. The results for a larger ring region around the centre indicate even longer star formation, but in this case the results are of lower quality, probably because of the differential extinction detected in the area. Therefore, the presence of age gradients in NGC1751 could not be probed. Together with our previous findings for the SMC cluster NGC419, the present results for the NGC1751 centre argue in favour of multiple star formation episodes (or continued star formation) being at the origin of the multiple main sequence turn-offs in Magellanic Cloud clusters with ages around 1.5 Gyr.

The rich SMC star cluster NGC419 has recently been found to present both a broad main sequence turn-off and a dual red clump of giants, in the sharp colour-magnitude diagrams (CMD) derived from the High Resolution Channel of the Advanced Camera for S urveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. In this work, we apply to the NGC419 data the classical method of star formation history (SFH) recovery via CMD reconstruction, deriving for the first time this function for a star cluster with multiple turn-offs. The values for the cluster metallicity, reddening, distance and binary fraction, were varied within the limits allowed by present observations. The global best-fitting solution is an excellent fit to the data, reproducing all the CMD features with striking accuracy. The corresponding star formation rate is provided together with estimates of its random and systematic errors. Star formation is found to last for at least 700 Myr, and to have a marked peak at the middle of this interval, for an age of 1.5 Gyr. Our findings argue in favour of multiple star formation episodes (or continued star formation) being at the origin of the multiple main sequence turn-offs in Magellanic Cloud clusters with ages around 1 Gyr. It remains to be tested whether alternative hypotheses, such as a main sequence spread caused by rotation, could produce similarly good fits to the data.

We present spatially resolved imaging and integral field spectroscopy data for 450 cool giant stars within 1,pc from Sgr,A*. We use the prominent CO bandheads to derive effective temperatures of individual giants. Additionally we present the deepest spectroscopic observation of the Galactic Center so far, probing the number of B9/A0 main sequence stars ($2.2-2.8,M_odot$) in two deep fields. From spectro-photometry we construct a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram of the red giant population and fit the observed diagram with model populations to derive the star formation history of the nuclear cluster. We find that (1) the average nuclear star-formation rate dropped from an initial maximum $sim10$,Gyrs ago to a deep minimum 1-2,Gyrs ago and increased again during the last few hundred Myrs, and (2) that roughly 80% of the stellar mass formed more than 5,Gyrs ago; (3) mass estimates within $rm Rsim1,pc$ from Sgr,A* favor a dominant star formation mode with a normal Chabrier/Kroupa initial mass function for the majority of the past star formation in the Galactic Center. The bulk stellar mass seems to have formed under conditions significantly different from the young stellar disks, perhaps because at the time of the formation of the nuclear cluster the massive black hole and its sphere of influence was much smaller than today.
NGC1846 and NGC1783 are two massive star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, hosting both an extended main sequence turn-off and a dual clump of red giants. They present similar masses but differ mainly in angular size. Starting from their high-q uality ACS data in the F435W, F555W and F814W filters, and updated sets of stellar evolutionary tracks, we derive their star formation rates as a function of age, SFR(t), by means of the classical method of CMD reconstruction which is usually applied to nearby galaxies. The method confirms the extended periods of star formation derived from previous analysis of the same data. When the analysis is performed for a finer resolution in age, we find clear evidence for a 50-Myr long hiatus between the oldest peak in the SFR(t), and a second prolonged period of star formation, in both clusters. For the more compact cluster NGC1846, there seems to be no significant difference between the SFR(t) in the cluster centre and in an annulus with radii between 20 and 60 arcsec (from 4.8 to 15.4 pc). The same does not occur in the more extended NGC1783 cluster, where the outer ring (between 33 and 107 arcsec, from 8.0 to 25.9 pc) is found to be slightly younger than the centre. We also explore the best-fitting slope of the present-day mass function and binary fraction for the different cluster regions, finding hints of a varying mass function between centre and outer ring in NGC1783. These findings are discussed within the present scenarios for the formation of clusters with multiple turn-offs.

Images of five fields in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 obtained with the {it Hubble Space Telescope} in the F555W and F814W filters are presented. Photometry for the stars in these images was extracted using the Point-Spread-Functio n fitting program HSTPHOT/MULTIPHOT. The resulting color-magnitude diagrams reach down to $Vapprox26$, a level well below the red clump, and were used to solve quantitatively for the star formation history of NGC 6822. Assuming that stars began forming in this galaxy from low-metallicity gas and that there is little variation in the metallicity at each age, the distribution of stars along the red giant branch is best fit with star formation beginning in NGC 6822 12-15 Gyr ago. The best-fitting star formation histories for the old and intermediate age stars are similar among the five fields and show a constant or somewhat increasing star formation rate from 15 Gyr ago to the present except for a possible dip in the star formation rate from 3 to 5 Gyr ago. The main differences among the five fields are in the higher overall star formation rate per area in the bar fields as well as in the ratio of the recent star formation rate to the average past rate. These variations in the recent star formation rate imply that stars formed within the past 0.6 Gyr are not spatially very well mixed throughout the galaxy.
