A three-dimensional unilateral contact problem for articular cartilage layers attached to subchondral bones shaped as elliptic paraboloids is considered in the framework of the biphasic cartilage model. The main novelty of the study is in accounting not only for the normal (vertical), but also for tangential vertical (horisontal) displacements of the contacting surfaces. Exact general relationships have been established between the contact approach and some integral characteristics of the contact pressure, including the contact force. Asymptotic representations for the contact pressure integral characteristics are obtained in terms of the contact approach and some integral characteristics of the contact zone. The main result is represented by the first-order approximation problem.

We consider a viscoelastic body occupying a smooth bounded domain of $R^3$ under the effects of volumic traction forces. Inertial effects are considered: hence, the equation describing the evolution of displacements is of the second order in time. On a part of the boundary of the domain, the body is anchored to a support and no displacement may occur; on a second part, the body can move freely; on a third portion of the boundary, the body is in adhesive contact with a solid support. The boundary forces acting there as a byproduct of elastic stresses are responsible for delamination, i.e., progressive failure of adhesive bonds. This phenomenon is mathematically represented by a boundary variable that represents the local fraction of active bonds and is assumed to satisfy a doubly nonlinear ODE. Following the lines of a new approach based on duality methods in Sobolev-Bochner spaces, we define a suitable concept of weak solution to the resulting system of equations. Correspondingly, we prove an existence result on finite time intervals of arbitrary length.
Radiosensitizers can increase the local treatment efficacy under a relatively low and safe radiation dose, thereby facilitating tumor eradication and minimizing side effects. Here, we report a new class of radiosensitizers that contain several gold ( Au) atoms embedded inside a peptide shell (e.g., Au10-12(SG)10-12) and can achieve ultrahigh tumor uptake (10.86 SUV at 24 h post injection) and targeting specificity, efficient renal clearance, and high radiotherapy enhancement.
Blood system functions are very diverse and important for most processes in human organism. One of its primary functions is matter transport among different parts of the organism including tissue supplying with oxygen, carbon dioxide excretion, drug propagation etc. Forecasting of these processes under normal conditions and in the presence of different pathologies like atherosclerosis, loss of blood, anatomical abnormalities, pathological changing in chemical transformations and others is significant issue for many physiologists. In this connection should be pointed out that global processes are of special interest as they include feedbacks and interdependences among different regions of the organism. Thus the main goal of this work is to develop the model allowing to describe effectively blood flow in the whole organism. As we interested in global processes the models of the four vascular trees (arterial and venous parts of systemic and pulmonary circulation) must be closed with heart and peripheral circulation models. As one of the model applications the processes of the blood loss is considered in the end of the paper.
The goal of immunotherapy is to enhance the ability of the immune system to kill cancer cells. Immunotherapy is more effective and, in general, the prognosis is better, when more immune cells infiltrate the tumor. We explore the question of whether t he spatial distribution rather than just the density of immune cells in the tumor is important in forecasting whether cancer recurs. After reviewing previous work on this issue, we introduce a novel application of maximum entropy to quantify the spatial distribution of discrete point-like objects. We apply our approach to B and T cells in images of tumor tissue taken from triple negative breast cancer (TBNC) patients. We find that there is a distinct difference in the spatial distribution of immune cells between good clinical outcome (no recurrence of cancer within at least 5 years of diagnosis) and poor clinical outcome (recurrence within 3 years of diagnosis). Our results highlight the importance of spatial distribution of immune cells within tumors with regard to clinical outcome, and raise new questions on their role in cancer recurrence.
Despite numerous advances in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, monitoring the formation of tissue regeneration and its metabolic variations during culture is still a challenge and mostly limited to bulk volumetric assays. Her e, a simple method of adding capsules based optical sensors in cell seeded 3D scaffolds is presented and the potential of these sensors to monitor the pH changes in space and time during cell growth is demonstrated. It is shown that the pH decreased over time in the 3D scaffolds, with a more prominent decrease at the edges of the scaffolds. Moreover, the pH change is higher in 3D scaffolds compared to monolayered 2D cell cultures. The results suggest that this system, composed by capsules based optical sensors and 3D scaffolds with predefined geometry and pore architecture network, can be a suitable platform for monitoring pH variations during 3D cell growth and tissue formation. This is particularly relevant for the investigation of 3D cellular microenvironment alterations occurring both during physiological processes, such as tissue regeneration, and pathological processes, such as cancer evolution.
