In this paper, a link between monotonicity of deterministic dynamical systems and propagation of order by Markov processes is established. The order propagation has received considerable attention in the literature, however, this notion is still not fully understood. The main contribution of this paper is a study of the order propagation in the deterministic setting, which potentially can provide new techniques for analysis in the stochastic one. We take a close look at the propagation of the so-called increasing and increasing convex orders. Infinitesimal characterisations of these orders are derived, which resemble the well-known Kamke conditions for monotonicity. It is shown that increasing order is equivalent to the standard monotonicity, while the class of systems propagating the increasing convex order is equivalent to the class of monotone systems with convex vector fields. The paper is concluded by deriving a novel result on order propagating diffusion processes and an application of this result to biological processes.

Mixed monotone systems form an important class of nonlinear systems that have recently received attention in the abstraction-based control design area. Slightly different definitions exist in the literature, and it remains a challenge to verify mixed monotonicity of a system in general. In this paper, we first clarify the relation between different existing definitions of mixed monotone systems, and then give two sufficient conditions for mixed monotone functions defined on Euclidean space. These sufficient conditions are more general than the ones from the existing control literature, and they suggest that mixed monotonicity is a very generic property. Some discussions are provided on the computational usefulness of the proposed sufficient conditions.
In this technical note we analyse the performance improvement and optimality properties of the Learning Model Predictive Control (LMPC) strategy for linear deterministic systems. The LMPC framework is a policy iteration scheme where closed-loop traje ctories are used to update the control policy for the next execution of the control task. We show that, when a Linear Independence Constraint Qualification (LICQ) condition holds, the LMPC scheme guarantees strict iterative performance improvement and optimality, meaning that the closed-loop cost evaluated over the entire task converges asymptotically to the optimal cost of the infinite-horizon control problem. Compared to previous works this sufficient LICQ condition can be easily checked, it holds for a larger class of systems and it can be used to adaptively select the prediction horizon of the controller, as demonstrated by a numerical example.
In this paper, we investigate geometric properties of monotone systems by studying their isostables and basins of attraction. Isostables are boundaries of specific forward-invariant sets defined by the so-called Koopman operator, which provides a lin ear infinite-dimensional description of a nonlinear system. First, we study the spectral properties of the Koopman operator and the associated semigroup in the context of monotone systems. Our results generalize the celebrated Perron-Frobenius theorem to the nonlinear case and allow us to derive geometric properties of isostables and basins of attraction. Additionally, we show that under certain conditions we can characterize the bounds on the basins of attraction under parametric uncertainty in the vector field. We discuss computational approaches to estimate isostables and basins of attraction and illustrate the results on two and four state monotone systems.
We provide a set of counterexamples for the monotonicity of the Newton-Hewer method for solving the discrete-time algebraic Riccati equation in dynamic settings, drawing a contrast with the Riccati difference equation.
In this paper, we propose a new approach to design globally convergent reduced-order observers for nonlinear control systems via contraction analysis and convex optimization. Despite the fact that contraction is a concept naturally suitable for state estimation, the existing solutions are either local or relatively conservative when applying to physical systems. To address this, we show that this problem can be translated into an off-line search for a coordinate transformation after which the dynamics is (transversely) contracting. The obtained sufficient condition consists of some easily verifiable differential inequalities, which, on one hand, identify a very general class of detectable nonlinear systems, and on the other hand, can be expressed as computationally efficient convex optimization, making the design procedure more systematic. Connections with some well-established approaches and concepts are also clarified in the paper. Finally, we illustrate the proposed method with several numerical and physical examples, including polynomial, mechanical, electromechanical and biochemical systems.
