We study the spin transport in the quantum Heisenberg spin chain subject to boundary magnetic fields and driven out of equilibrium by Lindblad dissipators. An exact solution is given in terms of matrix product states, which allows us to calculate exactly the spin current for any chain size. It is found that the system undergoes a discontinuous spin-valve-like quantum phase transition from ballistic to sub-diffusive spin current, depending on the value of the boundary fields. Thus, the chain behaves as an extremely sensitive magnonic logic gate operating with the boundary fields as the base element.

Using the algebraic Bethe ansatz, we derive a matrix product representation of the exact Bethe-ansatz states of the six-vertex Heisenberg chain (either XXX or XXZ and spin-$frac{1}{2}$) with open boundary conditions. In this representation, the compo nents of the Bethe eigenstates are expressed as traces of products of matrices which act on a tensor product of auxiliary spaces. As compared to the matrix product states of the same Heisenberg chain but with periodic boundary conditions, the dimension of the exact auxiliary matrices is enlarged as if the conserved number of spin-flips considered would have been doubled. This result is generic for any non-nested integrable model, as is clear from our derivation and we further show by providing an additional example of the same matrix product state construction for a well known model of a gas of interacting bosons. Counterintuitively, the matrices do not depend on the spatial coordinate despite the open boundaries and thus suggest generic ways of exploiting (emergent) translational invariance both for finite size and in the thermodynamic limit.

The thermal entanglement of a two-qubit anisotropic Heisenberg $XYZ$ chain under an inhomogeneous magnetic field b is studied. It is shown that when inhomogeneity is increased to certain value, the entanglement can exhibit a larger revival than that of less values of b. The property is both true for zero temperature and a finite temperature. The results also show that the entanglement and critical temperature can be increased by increasing inhomogeneous exteral magnetic field.
Based on the inhomogeneous T-Q relation constructed via the off-diagonal Bethe Ansatz, the Bethe-type eigenstates of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain with arbitrary boundary fields are constructed. It is found that by employing two sets of gauge transformation s, proper generators and reference state for constructing Bethe vectors can be obtained respectively. Given an inhomogeneous T-Q relation for an eigenvalue, it is proven that the resulting Bethe state is an eigenstate of the transfer matrix, provided that the parameters of the generators satisfy the associated Bethe Ansatz equations.

The thermodynamic properties of the XXZ spin chain with integrable open boundary conditions at the gaped region (i.e., the anisotropic parameter $eta$ being a real number) are investigated. It is shown that the contribution of the inhomogeneous term i n the $T-Q$ relation of the ground state and elementary excited state can be neglected when the size of the system $N$ tends to infinity. The surface energy and elementary excitations induced by the unparallel boundary magnetic fields are obtained.
A new nonlinear integral equation (NLIE) describing the thermodynamics of the Heisenberg spin chain is derived based on the t-W relation of the quantum transfer matrices. The free energy of the system in a magnetic field is thus obtained by solving t he NLIE. This method can be generalized to other lattice quantum integrable models. Taking the SU(3)-invariant quantum spin chain as an example, we construct the corresponding NLIEs and compute the free energy. The present results coincide exactly with those obtained via other methods previously.
