In this note we deal with a new observer for nonlinear systems of dimension n in canonical observability form. We follow the standard high-gain paradigm, but instead of having an observer of dimension n with a gain that grows up to power n, we design an observer of dimension 2n-2 with a gain that grows up only to power 2.

In this paper, a novel adaptive-gain Second Order Sliding Mode (SOSM) observer is proposed for multicell converters by considering it as a class of hybrid systems. The aim is to reduce the number of voltage sensors by estimating the capacitor voltage s only from the measurement of load current. The proposed observer is proven to be robust in the presence of perturbations with emph{unknown} boundary. However, the states of the system are only partially observable in the sense of observability rank condition. Due to its switching behavior, a recent concept of $Z(T_N)$ observability is used to analysis its hybrid observability, since its observability depends upon the switching control signals. Under certain condition of the switching sequences, the voltage across each capacitor becomes observable. Simulation results and comparisons with Luenberger switched observer highlight the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed observer with respect to output measurement noise and system uncertainties (load variations).

Pixel detectors typically display pixel-to-pixel gain variation of a few percent which result in reduced spectroscopic performance. We have developed a calibration method which relies on cross-correlating histograms of many pixel pairs and obtaining large sets of relative shifts. These were subsequently used to calculate absolute pixel shifts and corresponding pixel gains. We demonstrate that this method yields stable gain calibration maps with an order of magnitude less statistics than required by typical approaches. Finally, we demonstrate the accuracy of the method by comparing with gain maps obtained with good statistics and monochromatic radiation at a synchrotron beamline.

We provide a thorough theoretical analysis of qubit state measurement in a setup where a driven, parametrically-coupled cavity system is directly coupled to the qubit, with one of the cavities having a weak Kerr nonlinearity. Such a system could be r eadily realized using circuit QED architectures. We demonstrate that this setup is capable in the standard linear-response regime of both producing a highly amplified output signal while at the same time achieving near quantum-limited performance: the measurement backaction on the qubit is near the minimal amount required by the uncertainty principle. This setup thus represents a promising route for performing efficient large-gain qubit measurement that is completely on-chip, and that does not rely on the use of circulators or complex non-reciprocal amplifiers.
We demonstrate optical coherence tomography based on an SU(1,1) nonlinear interferometer with high-gain parametric down-conversion. For imaging and sensing applications, this scheme promises to outperform previous experiments working at low parametri c gain, since higher photon fluxes provide lower integration times for obtaining high-quality images. In this way one can avoid using single-photon detectors or CCD cameras with very high sensitivities, and standard spectrometers can be used instead. Other advantages are: higher sensitivity to small loss and amplification before detection, so that the detected light power considerably exceeds the probing one.
Following the concept of $mathcal{PT}$-symmetric couplers, we propose a linearly coupled system of nonlinear waveguides, made of positive- and negative-index materials, which carry, respectively, gain and loss. We report novel bi- and multi-stability states pertaining to transmitted and reflective intensities, which are controlled by the ratio of the gain and loss coefficients, and phase mismatch between the waveguides. These states offer transmission regimes with extremely low threshold intensities for transitions between coexisting states, and very large amplification ratio between the input and output intensities leading to an efficient way of controlling light with light.
