In metals near a quantum critical point, the electrical resistance is thought to be determined by the lifetime of the carriers of current, rather than the scattering from defects. The observation of $T$-linear resistivity suggests that the lifetime only depends on temperature, implying the vanishing of an intrinsic energy scale and the presence of a quantum critical point. Our data suggest that this concept extends to the magnetic field dependence of the resistivity in the unconventional superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ near its quantum critical point. We find that the lifetime depends on magnetic field in the same way as it depends on temperature, scaled by the ratio of two fundamental constants $mu_B/k_B$. These measurements imply that high magnetic fields probe the same quantum dynamics that give rise to the $T$-linear resistivity, revealing a novel kind of magnetoresistance that does not depend on details of the Fermi surface, but rather on the balance of thermal and magnetic energy scales. This opens new opportunities for the investigation of transport near a quantum critical point by using magnetic fields to couple selectively to charge, spin and spatial anisotropies.

We performed single electron tunneling measurements on bilayer ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. We observe an unusual oscillation in tunneling magnetoresistance near the metamagnetic quantum phase transition at temperatures below 7 K. The characteristic features of this oscillation suggest that it is unrelated to traditional quantum oscillations caused by orbit quantization. In addition, tunneling spectra are found to change sharply in the low bias voltage range of $V$ $<$ 2mV near the transition field. These observations reveal that the Fermi surface of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ changes in a surprising way as the system undergoes strong critical fluctuations.
Recent experiments on quantum criticality in the Ge-substituted heavy-electron material YbRh2Si2 under magnetic field have revealed a possible non-Fermi liquid (NFL) strange metal (SM) state over a finite range of fields at low temperatures, which st ill remains a puzzle. In the SM region, the zero-field antiferromagnetism is suppressed. Above a critical field, it gives way to a heavy Fermi liquid with Kondo correlation. The T (temperature)-linear resistivity and the T-logarithmic followed by a power-law singularity in the specific heat coefficient at low T, salient NFL behaviours in the SM region, are un-explained. We offer a mechanism to address these open issues theoretically based on the competition between a quasi-2d fluctuating short-ranged resonant- valence-bonds (RVB) spin-liquid and the Kondo correlation near criticality. Via a field-theoretical renormalization group analysis on an effective field theory beyond a large-N approach to an anti- ferromagnetic Kondo-Heisenberg model, we identify the critical point, and explain remarkably well both the crossovers and the SM behaviour.

Heavy fermion systems, and other strongly correlated electron materials, often exhibit a competition between antiferromagnetic (AF) and singlet ground states. Using exact Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we examine the effect of impurities in t he vicinity of such AF- singlet quantum critical points, through an appropriately defined impurity susceptibility, $chi_{imp}$. Our key finding is a connection, within a single calculational framework, between AF domains induced on the singlet side of the transition, and the behavior of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate $1/T_1$. We show that local NMR measurements provide a diagnostic for the location of the QCP which agrees remarkably well with the vanishing of the AF order parameter and large values of $chi_{imp}$. We connect our results with experiments on Cd-doped CeCoIn$_5$.

We present a study of thermoelectric coefficients in CeCoIn_5 down to 0.1 K and up to 16 T in order to probe the thermoelectric signatures of quantum criticality. In the vicinity of the field-induced quantum critical point, the Nernst coefficient nu exhibits a dramatic enhancement without saturation down to lowest measured temperature. The dimensionless ratio of Seebeck coefficient to electronic specific heat shows a minimum at a temperature close to threshold of the quasiparticle formation. Close to T_c(H), in the vortex-liquid state, the Nernst coefficient behaves anomalously in puzzling contrast with other superconductors and standard vortex dynamics.
An extended Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice with two orbitals per site at charge neutrality is investigated with unbiased large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The Fermi velocity of the Dirac fermions is renormalized as the cluster charge interaction increases, until a mass term emerges and a quantum phase transition from Dirac semi-metal to valence bond solid (VBS) insulator is established. The quantum critical point is discovered to belong to 3D $N=4$ Gross-Neveu chiral XY universality with the critical exponents obtained at high precision. Further enhancement of the interaction drives the system into two different VBS phases, the properties and transition between them are also revealed. Since the model is related to magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, our results may have relevance towards the symmetry breaking order at the charge neutrality point of the material, and associate the wide range of universal strange metal behavior around it with quantum critical fluctuations.
