The behavior of the generation efficiency and radiation spectrum of a three-cavity axial vircator versus the radius of the injected electron beam, its impedance and energy homogeneity is studied. This paper establishes that for each geometry of a three-cavity resonator, there exist the optimal (maximizing the generation efficiency) values of these parameters and determines the range within which they may vary without losing the efficiency of generation.

The fast beam-ion instability (FII) is caused by the interaction of an electron bunch train with the residual gas ions. The ion oscillations in the potential well of the electron beam have an inherent frequency spread due to the nonlinear profile of the potential. However, this frequency spread and associated with it Landau damping typically is not strong enough to suppress the instability. In this work, we develop a model of FII which takes into account the frequency spread in the electron beam due to the beam-beam interaction in an electron-ion collider. We show that with a large enough beam-beam parameter the fast ion instability can be suppressed. We estimate the strength of this effect for the parameters of the eRHIC electron-ion collider.
We present measurements of slice energy spread at the injector section of the European X-Ray Free Electron Laser for an electron bunch with charge of 250 pC. Two methods considered in the paper are based on measurements at the dispersive section afte r a transverse deflecting structure (TDS). The first approach uses measurements at different beam energies. We show that with a proper scaling of the TDS voltage with the beam energy the rms error of the measurement is less than 0.3 keV for the energy spread of 6 keV. In the second approach we demonstrate that keeping the beam energy constant but adjusting only the optics we are able to simplify the measurement complexity and to reduce the rms error below 0.1 keV. The accuracy of the measurement is confirmed by numerical modelling including beam transport effects and collective beam dynamics of the electron beam. The slice energy spread measured at the European XFEL for the beam charge of 250 pC is nearly 3 times lower as the one reported recently at SwissFEL for the same cathode material and the beam charge of 200 pC.
Compton scattering provides one of the most promising scheme to obtain polarized positrons for the next generation of $e^-$ -- $e^+$ colliders. Moreover it is an attractive method to produce monochromatic high energy polarized gammas for nuclear appl ications and X-rays for compact light sources. In this framework a four-mirror Fabry-Perot cavity has been installed at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF - KEK, Tsukuba, Japan) and is used to produce an intense flux of polarized gamma rays by Compton scattering cite{ipac-mightylaser}. For electrons at the ATF energy (1.28 GeV) Compton scattering may result in a shorter lifetime due to the limited bucket acceptance. We have implemented the effect of Compton scattering on a 2D tracking code with a Monte-Carlo method. This code has been used to study the longitudinal dynamics of the electron beam at the ATF damping ring, in particular the evolution of the energy spread and the bunch length under Compton scattering. The results obtained are presented and discussed. Possible methods to observe the effect of Compton scattering on the ATF beam are proposed.
We demonstrate the strong coupling between an electron spin ensemble and a three-dimensional cavity in a reflection geometry. We also find that an anticrossing in the cavity/spin spectrum can be observed under conditions that the collective coupling strength $g_c$ is smaller than the spin linewidth $gamma_s$ or the cavity linewidth. We identify a ratio of $g_c$ to $gamma_s$ ($g_c/gamma_s >$ 0.64) as a condition to observe a splitting in the cavity frequency. Finally, we confirm that $g_c$ scales with $sqrt{N}$, where $N$ is the number of polarized spins.
Results are presented from numerical modeling of the effect of the inhomogeneity of the ion background on the complicated spatiotemporal dynamics of an electron beam with a virtual cathode in plane geometry. The possibility is demonstrated of increas ing the generation frequency without changing the beam current. The spatiotemporal structures that form in the beam and govern the complicated stochastic dynamics of the nonuniform electron-plasma system under consideration are investigated by the methods of wavelet bicoherence and by analyzing the calculated electron trajectories on the space-time diagrams
