We find the relation between the energy of the absorbed photon and the threshold current at which the resistive state appears in the current-carrying superconducting film with the probability about unity. In our calculations we use the modified hot spot model, which assumes different strength of suppression of the superconducting order parameter in the finite area of the film around the place where the photon is absorbed. To find the threshold current we solve the Ginzburg-Landau equation for superconducting order parameter, which automatically includes the current continuity equation and it allows us to consider the back effect of current redistribution near the hot spot on the stability of the superconducting state. We find quantitative agreement with the recent experiments, where we use the single fitting parameter which describes what part of the energy of the photon goes for the local destruction of the superconductivity in the film.

We show that avoiding bends in a current-carrying superconducting nanowire enhances the probability for low energy photons to be detected and that this enhancement is entirely due to the increase in the experimentally achievable critical current. We studied nanowires shaped as either meander or spiral. The spirals had different layouts, a double-spiral layout with an S-turn in the middle and a single-spiral layout without such turn. Nanowires were prepared from films of niobium nitride with a thickness of 5 nm. For specimens with each layout we measured the spectra of the single-photon response in the wavelength range from 400 nm to 1600 nm and defined the cut-off wavelength ${lambda}c$ beyond which the response rolls off. The largest and the smallest ${lambda}c$ were found for the single-spiral layout and for the meander, respectively. For all three layouts the relationship between ${lambda}c$ and the relative bias current falls onto a universal curve which has been predicted earlier in the framework of the modified hot-spot model. For the single-spiral layout, the efficiency of photon detection at wavelengths smaller than ${lambda}c$ reaches the expected absorbance of the spiral structure and the timing jitter per unit length of the nanowire has the smallest value.
We theoretically study the dependence of the intrinsic detection efficiency (IDE) of superconducting single photon detector on the applied current $I$ and magnetic field $H$. We find that the current, at which the resistive state appears in the super conducting film, depends on the position of the hot spot (region with suppressed superconductivity around the place where the photon has been absorbed) with respect to the edges of the film. It provides inevitable smooth dependence IDE(I) when IDE $sim 0.05-1$ even for homogenous straight superconducting film and in the absence of fluctuations. When IDE $lesssim 0.05$ much sharper current dependence comes from the fluctuation assisted vortex entry to the hot spot located near the edge of the film. We find that weak magnetic field strongly affects IDE when the photon detection is connected with fluctuation assisted vortex entry (IDE$ll 1$) and it weakly affects IDE when the photon detection is connected with the current induced vortex entry to the hot spot or nucleation of the vortex-antivortex pair inside the hot spot (IDE$sim 0.05-1$).
We estimate the depairing current of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) by studying the dependence of the nanowires kinetic inductance on their bias current. The kinetic inductance is determined by measuring the resonance frequ ency of resonator style nanowire coplanar waveguides both in transmission and reflection configurations. Bias current dependent shifts in the measured resonant frequency correspond to the change in the kinetic inductance, which can be compared with theoretical predictions. We demonstrate that the fast relaxation model described in the literature accurately matches our experimental data and provides a valuable tool for direct determination of the depairing current. Accurate and direct measurement of the depairing current is critical for nanowire quality analysis, as well as modeling efforts aimed at understanding the detection mechanism in SNSPDs.
We investigate the role of electrothermal feedback in the operation of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs). It is found that the desired mode of operation for SNSPDs is only achieved if this feedback is unstable, which happens n aturally through the slow electrical response associated with their relatively large kinetic inductance. If this response is sped up in an effort to increase the device count rate, the electrothermal feedback becomes stable and results in an effect known as latching, where the device is locked in a resistive state and can no longer detect photons. We present a set of experiments which elucidate this effect, and a simple model which quantitatively explains the results.

Using two-temperature model coupled with modified time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation we calculate the delay time $tau_d$ in appearance of growing normal domain in the current-biased superconducting strip after absorption of the single photon. We demonstrate that $tau_d$ depends on the place in the strip where photon is absorbed and monotonically decreases with increasing of the current. We argue, that the variation of $tau_d$ (timing jitter), connected either with position-dependent response or Fano fluctuations could be as small as the lowest relaxation time of the superconducting order parameter $sim hbar/k_BT_c$ ($T_c$ is the critical temperature of the superconductor) when the current approaches the depairing current.
