We demonstrate, both experimentally and theoretically, a new phenomenon: the presence of dissipative coupling in the system of driven bosons. This is evidenced for a particular case of externally excited spots of exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities. We observe that for two spatially separated condensates the dissipative coupling leads to the phase locking, either in-phase or out-of-phase, between the condensates. The effect depends on the distance between the condensates. For several excited spots, we observe the appearance of spontaneous vorticity in the system.

We examine the photoluminescence of highly-excited exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities. Under strong pumping, exciton-polariton condensates have been observed to undergo a lasing transition where strong coupling between the e xcitons and photons is lost. We discuss an alternative high-density scenario, where the strong coupling is maintained. We find that the photoluminescence smoothly transitions between the lower polariton energy to the cavity photon energy. An intuitive understanding of the change in spectral characteristics is given, as well as differences to the photoluminescence characteristics of the lasing case.

We study driven-dissipative Bose-Einstein condensates in a two-mode Josephson system, such as a double-well potential, with asymmetrical pumping. We investigate nonlinear effects on the condensate populations and mode transitions. The generalized Gro ss-Pitaevskii equations are modified in order to treat pumping of only a single mode. We characterize the steady-state solutions in such a system as well as criteria for potential trapping of a condensate mode. There are many possible steady-states, with different density and/or phase profiles. Transitions between different condensate modes can be induced by varying the parameters of the junction or the initial conditions, or by applying external fields.
Bose-Einstein condensates of exciton-polaritons are described by a Schrodinger system of two equations. Nonlinearity due to exciton interactions gives rise to a frequency band of dark soliton solutions, which are found analytically for the lossless z ero-velocity case. The solitons far-field value varies from zero to infinity as the operating frequency varies across the band. For positive detuning (photon frequency higher than exciton frequency), the exciton wavefunction becomes discontinuous when the operating frequency exceeds the exciton frequency. This phenomenon lies outside the parameter regime of validity of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) model. Within its regime of validity, we give a derivation of a single-mode GP model from the initial Schrodinger system and compare the continuous polariton solitons and GP solitons using the healing length notion.
The phase and the frequency of an exciton polariton condensate excited by a nonresonant pump can be efficiently manipulated by an external coherent light. Being tuned close to the resonance with the condensate eigenfrequency, the external laser light imposes its frequency to the condensate and locks its phase, thereby manifesting a synchronization effect. The conditions of formation of the phase synchronized regime are determined. The synchronization of a couple of closely spaced polariton condensates by a spatially uniform coherent light is examined. At the moderate strength of the coherent driving the synchronization is accompanied by the appearance of symmetry-breaking states of the polariton dyad, while these states are superseded by the symmetric state at the high-intensity driving. By employing a zero-dimensional model of coupled dissipative oscillators with both dissipative and conservative coupling, we study the bifurcation scenario of the symmetry-breaking state formation.
Recently a new type of system exhibiting spontaneous coherence has emerged -- the exciton-polariton condensate. Exciton-polaritons (or polaritons for short) are bosonic quasiparticles that exist inside semiconductor microcavities, consisting of a sup erposition of an exciton and a cavity photon. Above a threshold density the polaritons macroscopically occupy the same quantum state, forming a condensate. The lifetime of the polaritons are typically comparable to or shorter than thermalization times, making them possess an inherently non-equilibrium nature. Nevertheless, they display many of the features that would be expected of equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The non-equilibrium nature of the system raises fundamental questions of what it means for a system to be a BEC, and introduces new physics beyond that seen in other macroscopically coherent systems. In this review we focus upon several physical phenomena exhibited by exciton-polariton condensates. In particular we examine topics such as the difference between a polariton BEC, a polariton laser, and a photon laser, as well as physical phenomena such as superfluidity, vortex formation, BKT (Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless) and BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) physics. We also discuss the physics and applications of engineered polariton structures.
