We demonstrate the ability to control quantum coherent Rabi-oscillations in a room-temperature quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) by shaping the light pulses that trigger them. The experiments described here show that when the excitati on is resonant with the short wavelength slope of the SOA gain spectrum, a linear frequency chirp affects its ability to trigger Rabi-oscillations within the SOA: A negative chirp inhibits Rabi-oscillations whereas a positive chirp can enhance them, relative to the interaction of a transform limited pulse. The experiments are confirmed by a numerical calculation that models the propagation of the experimentally shaped pulses through the SOA.
The ability to induce, observe and control quantum coherent interactions in room temperature, electrically driven optoelectronic devices is of outmost significance for advancing quantum science and engineering towards practical applications. We demon strate here a quantum interference phenomena, Ramsey fringes, in an inhomogeneously broadened InAs/InP quantum dot (QD) ensemble in the form of a 1.5 mm long optical amplifier operating at room temperature. Observation of Ramsey fringes in semiconductor QD was previously achieved only at cryogenic temperatures and only in isolated single dot systems. A high-resolution pump probe scheme where both pulses are characterized by cross frequency resolved optical gating (X-FROG) reveals a clear oscillatory behavior both in the amplitude and the instantaneous frequency of the probe pulse with a period that equals one optical cycle at operational wavelength. Using nominal input delays of 600 to 900 fs and scanning the separation around each delay in 1 fs steps, we map the evolution of the material de-coherence and extract a coherence time. Moreover we notice a unique phenomenon, which can not be observed in single dot systems, that the temporal position of the output probe pulse also oscillates with the same periodicity but with a quarter cycle delay relative to the intensity variations. This delay is the time domain manifestation of coupling between the real and imaginary parts of the complex susceptibility.
Solid-state color centers with manipulatable spin qubits and telecom-ranged fluorescence are ideal platforms for quantum communications and distributed quantum computations. In this work, we coherently control the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center spins i n silicon carbide at room temperature, in which telecom-wavelength emission is detected. We increase the NV concentration six-fold through optimization of implantation conditions. Hence, coherent control of NV center spins is achieved at room temperature and the coherence time T2 can be reached to around 17.1 {mu}s. Furthermore, investigation of fluorescence properties of single NV centers shows that they are room temperature photostable single photon sources at telecom range. Taking advantages of technologically mature materials, the experiment demonstrates that the NV centers in silicon carbide are promising platforms for large-scale integrated quantum photonics and long-distance quantum networks.
Recently, vacancy-related spin defects in silicon carbide (SiC) have been demonstrated to be potentially suitable for versatile quantum interface building and scalable quantum network construction. Significant efforts have been undertaken to identify spin systems in SiC and to extend their quantum capabilities using large-scale growth and advanced nanofabrication methods. Here we demonstrated a type of spin defect in the 4H polytype of SiC generated via hydrogen ion implantation with high-temperature post-annealing, which is different from any known defects. These spin defects can be optically addressed and coherently controlled even at room temperature, and their fluorescence spectrum and optically detected magnetic resonance spectra are different from those of any previously discovered defects. Moreover, the generation of these defects can be well controlled by optimizing the annealing temperature after implantation. These defects demonstrate high thermal stability with coherently controlled electron spins, facilitating their application in quantum sensing and masers under harsh conditions.
Optically active defects in solids with accessible spin states are promising candidates for solid state quantum information and sensing applications. To employ these defects as quantum building blocks, coherent manipulation of their spin state is req uired. Here we realize coherent control of ensembles of boron vacancy (V$_B^-$) centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Specifically, by applying pulsed spin resonance protocols, we measure spin-lattice relaxation time ($T_1$) of 18 $mu$s and spin coherence time ($T_2$) of 2 $mu$s at room temperature. The spin-lattice relaxation time increases by three orders of magnitude at cryogenic temperature. Furthermore, employing a two- and three-pulse electron spin-echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) we separate the quadrupole and hyperfine interactions with the surrounding nuclei. Finally, by applying a method to decouple the spin state from its inhomogeneous nuclear environment - a hole-burning - the spectral optically detected magnetic resonance linewidth is significantly reduced to several tens of kHz, thus extending the spin coherence time by a factor of three. Our results are important for employment of van der Waals materials for quantum technologies, specifically in the context of using hBN as a high-resolution quantum sensor for hybrid quantum systems including 2D heterostructures, nanoscale devices and emerging atomically thin magnets.
