Superradiance is one of the outstanding problems in quantum optics since Dicke introduced the concept of enhanced directional spontaneous emission by an ensemble of identical two-level atoms. The effect is based on correlated collective Dicke states which turn out to be highly entangled. Here we show that enhanced directional emission of spontaneous radiation can be produced also with statistically independent incoherent sources via the measurement of higher order correlation functions of the emitted radiation. Our analysis is applicable to a wide variety of quantum systems like trapped atoms, ions, quantum dots or NV-centers, and is also valid for statistically independent incoherent classical emitters. This is experimentally confirmed with up to eight independent thermal light sources.

We present a fully quantum mechanical treatment of optically rephased photon echoes. These echoes exhibit noise due to amplified spontaneous emission, however this noise can be seen as a consequence of the entanglement between the atoms and the outpu t light. With a rephasing pulse one can get an echo of the amplified spontaneous emission, leading to light with nonclassical correlations at points separated in time, which is of interest in the context of building wide bandwidth quantum repeaters. We also suggest a wideband version of DLCZ protocol based on the same ideas.
In this letter we present an efficient gap-independent cooling scheme for a quantum annealer that benefits from finite temperatures. We choose a system based on superconducting flux qubits as a prominent example of current quantum annealing platforms . We propose coupling the qubit system transversely to a coplanar waveguide to counter noise and heating that arise from always-present longitudinal thermal noise. We provide a schematic circuit layout for the system and show how, for feasible coupling strengths, we achieve global performance enhancements. Specifically, we achieve cooling improvements of about $50%$ in the adiabatic and a few hundred percent in the non-adiabatic regime, respectively.
In this paper, we report an experiment about the device-independent tests of classical and quantum entropy based on a recent proposal [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 110501 (2015)], in which the states are encoded on the polarization of a biphoton system and measured by the state tomography technology. We also theoretically obtained the minimal quantum entropy for three widely used linear dimension witnesses. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical analysis, demonstrating that lower entropy is needed in quantum systems than that in classical systems under given values of the dimension witness.
We consider the quantum-to-classical transition for macroscopic systems coupled to their environments. By applying Borns Rule, we are led to a particular set of quantum trajectories, or an unravelling, that describes the state of the system from the frame of reference of the subsystem. The unravelling involves a branch dependent Schmidt decomposition of the total state vector. The state in the subsystem frame, the conditioned state, is described by a Poisson process that involves a non-linear deterministic effective Schrodinger equation interspersed with quantum jumps into orthogonal states. We then consider a system whose classical analogue is a generic chaotic system. Although the state spreads out exponentially over phase space, the state in the frame of the subsystem localizes onto a narrow wave packet that follows the classical trajectory due to Ehrenfests Theorem. Quantum jumps occur with a rate that is the order of the effective Lyapunov exponent of the classical chaotic system and imply that the wave packet undergoes random kicks described by the classical Langevin equation of Brownian motion. The implication of the analysis is that this theory can explain in detail how classical mechanics arises from quantum mechanics by using only unitary evolution and Borns Rule applied to a subsystem.
We quantitatively investigate the non-classicality and non-locality of a whole new class of mixed disparate quantum and semiquantum photon sources at the quantum-classical boundary. The latter include photon added thermal and photon added coherent so urces, experimentally investigated recently by Zavatta et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 140406 (2009)]. The key quantity in our investigations is the visibility of the corresponding photon-photon correlation function. We present explicit results on the violations of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality - which is a measure of nonclassicality - as well as of Bell-type inequalities.
