This work presents an analysis of ocean wave data including rogue waves. A stochastic approach based on the theory of Markov processes is applied. With this analysis we achieve a characterization of the scale dependent complexity of ocean waves by means of a Fokker-Planck equation, providing stochastic information of multi-scale processes. In particular we show evidence of Markov properties for increment processes, which means that a three point closure for the complexity of the wave structures seems to be valid. Furthermore we estimate the parameters of the Fokker-Planck equation by parameter-free data analysis. The resulting Fokker-Planck equations are verified by numerical reconstruction. This work presents a new approach where the coherent structure of rogue waves seems to be integrated into the fundamental statistics of complex wave states.

As an example for complex systems with extreme events we investigate ocean wave states exhibiting rogue waves. We present a statistical method of data analysis based on multi-point statistics which for the first time allows grasping extreme rogue wav e events in a statistically highly satisfactory manner. The key to the success of the approach is mapping the complexity of multi-point data onto the statistics of hierarchically ordered height increments for different time scales for which we can show that a stochastic cascade process with Markov properties is governed by a Fokker-Planck equation. Conditional probabilities as well as the Fokker-Planck equation itself can be estimated directly from the available observational data. With this stochastic description surrogate data sets can in turn be generated allowing to work out arbitrary statistical features of the complex sea state in general and extreme rogue wave events in particular. The results also open up new perspectives for forecasting the occurrence probability of extreme rogue wave events, and even for forecasting the occurrence of individual rogue waves based on precursory dynamics.
The problem of information extraction from discrete stochastic time series, produced with some finite sampling frequency, using flicker-noise spectroscopy, a general framework for information extraction based on the analysis of the correlation links between signal irregularities and formulated for continuous signals, is discussed. It is shown that the mathematical notions of Dirac and Heaviside functions used in the analysis of continuous signals may be interpreted as high-frequency and low-frequency stochastic components, respectively, in the case of discrete series. The analysis of electroencephalogram measurements for a teenager with schizophrenic symptoms at two different sampling frequencies demonstrates that the power spectrum and difference moment contain different information in the case of discrete signals, which was formally proven for continuous signals. The sampling interval itself is suggested as an additional parameter that should be included in general parameterization procedures for real signals.
We present a new high-resolution global renewable energy atlas ({REatlas}) that can be used to calculate customised hourly time series of wind and solar PV power generation. In this paper, the atlas is applied to produce 32-year-long hourly model win d power time series for Denmark for each historical and future year between 1980 and 2035. These are calibrated and validated against real production data from the period 2000 to 2010. The high number of years allows us to discuss how the characteristics of Danish wind power generation varies between individual weather years. As an example, the annual energy production is found to vary by $pm10%$ from the average. Furthermore, we show how the production pattern change as small onshore turbines are gradually replaced by large onshore and offshore turbines. Finally, we compare our wind power time series for 2020 to corresponding data from a handful of Danish energy system models. The aim is to illustrate how current differences in model wind may result in significant differences in technical and economical model predictions. These include up to $15%$ differences in installed capacity and $40%$ differences in system reserve requirements.
Partial Wave Analysis has traditionally been carried out using a set of tools handcrafted for each experiment. By taking an object-oriented approach, the design presented in this paper attempts to create a more generally useful, and easily extensible , environment for analyzing many different type of data.
A new method of inferencing of coupled stochastic nonlinear oscillators is described. The technique does not require extensive global optimization, provides optimal compensation for noise-induced errors and is robust in a broad range of dynamical mod els. We illustrate the main ideas of the technique by inferencing a model of five globally and locally coupled noisy oscillators. Specific modifications of the technique for inferencing hidden degrees of freedom of coupled nonlinear oscillators is discussed in the context of physiological applications.
