We are interested in understanding the neural correlates of attentional processes using first principles. Here we apply a recently developed first principles approach that uses transmitted information in bits per joule to quantify the energy efficiency of information transmission for an inter-spike-interval (ISI) code that can be modulated by means of the synchrony in the presynaptic population. We simulate a single compartment conductance-based model neuron driven by excitatory and inhibitory spikes from a presynaptic population, where the rate and synchrony in the presynaptic excitatory population may vary independently from the average rate. We find that for a fixed input rate, the ISI distribution of the post synaptic neuron depends on the level of synchrony and is well-described by a Gamma distribution for synchrony levels less than 50%. For levels of synchrony between 15% and 50% (restricted for technical reasons), we compute the optimum input distribution that maximizes the mutual information per unit energy. This optimum distribution shows that an increased level of synchrony, as it has been reported experimentally in attention-demanding conditions, reduces the mode of the input distribution and the excitability threshold of post synaptic neuron. This facilitates a more energy efficient neuronal communication.

The recent concept of beamspace multiple input multiple output (MIMO) can significantly reduce the number of required radio-frequency (RF) chains in millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems without obvious performance loss. However, the fundamen tal limit of existing beamspace MIMO is that, the number of supported users cannot be larger than the number of RF chains at the same time-frequency resources. To break this fundamental limit, in this paper we propose a new spectrum and energy efficient mmWave transmission scheme that integrates the concept of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with beamspace MIMO, i.e., beamspace MIMO-NOMA. By using NOMA in beamspace MIMO systems, the number of supported users can be larger than the number of RF chains at the same time-frequency resources. Particularly, the achievable sum rate of the proposed beamspace MIMO-NOMA in a typical mmWave channel model is analyzed, which shows an obvious performance gain compared with the existing beamspace MIMO. Then, a precoding scheme based on the principle of zero-forcing (ZF) is designed to reduce the inter-beam interferences in the beamspace MIMO-NOMA system. Furthermore, to maximize the achievable sum rate, a dynamic power allocation is proposed by solving the joint power optimization problem, which not only includes the intra-beam power optimization, but also considers the inter-beam power optimization. Finally, an iterative optimization algorithm with low complexity is developed to realize the dynamic power allocation. Simulation results show that the proposed beamspace MIMO-NOMA can achieve higher spectrum and energy efficiency compared with existing beamspace MIMO.

The massiveness of devices in crowded Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications brings new challenges to existing random-access (RA) schemes, such as heavy signaling overhead and severe access collisions. In order to reduce the signaling overhead, we p ropose a fixed-symbol aided RA scheme where active devices access the network in a grant-free method, i.e., data packets are directly transmitted in randomly chosen slots. To further address the access collision which impedes the activity detection, one fixed symbol is inserted into each transmitted data packet in the proposed scheme. An iterative message passing based activity detection (MP-AD) algorithm is performed upon the received signal of this fixed symbol to detect the device activity in each slot. In addition, the deep neural network-aided MP-AD (DNN-MP-AD) algorithm is further designed to alleviate the correlation problem of the iterative message passing process. In the DNN-MP-AD algorithm, the iterative message passing process is transferred from a factor graph to a DNN. Weights are imposed on the messages in the DNN and further trained to improve the accuracy of the device activity detection. Finally, numerical simulations are provided for the throughput of the proposed RA scheme, the accuracy of the proposed MP-AD algorithm, as well as the improvement brought by the DNN-MP-AD algorithm.
High-speed trains (HSTs) are being widely deployed around the world. To meet the high-rate data transmission requirements on HSTs, millimeter wave (mmWave) HST communications have drawn increasingly attentions. To realize sufficient link margin, mmWa ve HST systems employ directional beamforming with large antenna arrays, which results in that the channel estimation is rather time-consuming. In HST scenarios, channel conditions vary quickly and channel estimations should be performed frequently. Since the period of each transmission time interval (TTI) is too short to allocate enough time for accurate channel estimation, the key challenge is how to design an efficient beam searching scheme to leave more time for data transmission. Motivated by the successful applications of machine learning, this paper tries to exploit the similarities between current and historical wireless propagation environments. Using the knowledge of reinforcement learning, the beam searching problem of mmWave HST communications is formulated as a multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem and a bandit inspired beam searching scheme is proposed to reduce the number of measurements as many as possible. Unlike the popular deep learning methods, the proposed scheme does not need to collect and store a massive amount of training data in advance, which can save a huge amount of resources such as storage space, computing time, and power energy. Moreover, the performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed in terms of regret. The regret analysis indicates that the proposed schemes can approach the theoretical limit very quickly, which is further verified by simulation results.
Towards next generation communications, Energy Efficiency (EE) attracts lots of attentions nowadays. Some innovative techniques have been proposed in prior literatures, especially the sleep mechanism of base station (BS). Yet how to sleep and when to sleep are still vague concepts. Another, most of the studies focus on the cellular section or core networks separately while integral and comprehensive version is neglected in prior literatures. In this paper, the integral optimization structure is studied based on cloud radio network (C-RAN) and information centric network (ICN) that raised latest combined with the sleep mode. The original C-RAN and ICN structures are amended in terms of reality application of sleep techniques. While adopting the sleep techniques both in core and cellular, apart from previous works, a transition smooth method that solve the current surge problems which is ignored before is further proposed. Based on the new method, it will be much more feasible to adopt the sleep techniques by knowing the appropriate occasion for transition between sleep and idle mode. Comprehensive computer based simulation results demonstrate that this integer proposal achieves better EE feature with negligible impact on quality of service (QoS) of user equipments (UEs).
Assuming that the number of possible decisions for a transmitter (e.g., the number of possible beamforming vectors) has to be finite and is given, this paper investigates for the first time the problem of determining the best decision set when energy -efficiency maximization is pursued. We propose a framework to find a good (finite) decision set which induces a minimal performance loss w.r.t. to the continuous case. We exploit this framework for a scenario of energy-efficient MIMO communications in which transmit power and beamforming vectors have to be adapted jointly to the channel given under finite-rate feedback. To determine a good decision set we propose an algorithm which combines the approach of Invasive Weed Optimization (IWO) and an Evolutionary Algorithm (EA). We provide a numerical analysis which illustrates the benefits of our point of view. In particular, given a performance loss level, the feedback rate can by reduced by 2 when the transmit decision set has been designed properly by using our algorithm. The impact on energy-efficiency is also seen to be significant.
