Using first-principles density functional calculations, electronic and optical properties of ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO are investigated. In particular, we have developed a way to obtain the spin-dependent optical response of the magnetic materials, which is helpful to verify the spin-dependent band structure of EuO. Significantly different optical responses from spin-up and spin-down channels are obtained in both linear and nonlinear cases, making it possible to distinguish contributions from different spin-channels in the optical absorption spectra if spin-flip process can be neglected. In addition, the red-shift of the absorption edge from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic ordering is explained by exchange interactions. Using such method, we have also compared the optical properties of multiferroic EuO which is induced by strong epitaxial strain. Our results show that from tensile to compressive strain, the blue-shift of the leading absorption peaks in the optical spectra, the red-shift of the optical band gap in spin-up state can be observed, consistent to the energy difference between spin-splitting orbits. The spin-dependent nonlinear optical properties reveal that in the infrared and visible light region, the contributions to second-harmonic generation (SHG) susceptibilities are mainly from spin-majority channels. In addition, the strain effect is also discussed. With the increase of epitaxial strain, the larger energy shift of the leading absorption peaks, and the more remarkable nonlinear optical response can be obtained.

We studied the light-induced effects in BiFeO$_3$ single crystals as a function of temperature by means of optical spectroscopy. Here we report the observation of several light-induced absorption features, which are discussed in terms of the photostr iction effect and are interpreted in terms of excitons. The temperature dependence of their energy position suggests a possible coupling between the excitons and the lattice vibrations. Moreover, there are hints for anomalies in the temperature evolution of the excitonic features, which might be related to the temperature-induced magnetic phase transitions in BiFeO$_3$. Our findings suggest a coupling between light-induced excitons and the lattice and spin degrees of freedom, which might be relevant for the observed ultrafast photostriction effect in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$.

All-optical pump-probe detection of magnetization precession has been performed for ferromagnetic EuO thin films at 10 K. We demonstrate that the circularly-polarized light can be used to control the magnetization precession on an ultrafast time scal e. This takes place within the 100 fs duration of a single laser pulse, through combined contribution from two nonthermal photomagnetic effects, i.e., enhancement of the magnetization and an inverse Faraday effect. From the magnetic field dependences of the frequency and the Gilbert damping parameter, the intrinsic Gilbert damping coefficient is evaluated to be {alpha} approx 3times10^-3.
The pressure dependence of light-induced effects in single-crystalline BiFeO$_3$ is studied by optical spectroscopy. At low pressures, we observe three light-induced absorption features with energies just below the two crystal field excitations and t he absorption onset, respectively. These absorption features were previously ascribed to excitons, possibly connected with the ultra-fast photostriction effect in BiFeO$_3$. The pressure-induced redshift of the absorption features follows the pressure dependence of the corresponding crystal field excitations and absorption onset, suggesting the link between them. Above the structural phase transition at $P_{mathrm{c1}}approx{}3.5$ GPa the three absorption features disappear, suggesting their connection to the polar phase in BiFeO$_3$. The pressure-induced disappearance of the photo-induced features is irreversible upon pressure release.
The three-dimensional ternary LiFeO2 compound presents various unusual essential properties. The main features are thoroughly explored by the density functional and many-body perturbation theory. The concise physical/chemical picture, the critical sp in-polarizations and orbital hybridizations in the Li-O and Fe-O bonds, are clearly examined through geometric optimization, quasi-particle energy spectra, spin-polarized density of states, the spatial charge densities, the spin-density distributions, and the strong optical responses. The unusual optical transitions cover various frequency-dependent absorption structures, and the most prominent plasmon modes are identified by the dielectric functions, energy loss functions, reflectance spectra, and absorption coefficients. Optical excitations are anisotropic and strongly affected by excitonic effects. The close combinations of electronic, magnetic and optical properties allow us to identify the significant spin-polarizations and orbital hybridizations for each available excitation channel. The lithium ferrite compound can be used for spintronic and photo-catalysis applications.
Most multiferroic materials with coexisting ferroelectric and magnetic order exhibit cycloidal antiferromagnetism with wavelength of several nanometers. The prototypical example is bismuth ferrite (BiFeO$_3$ or BFO), a room-temperature multiferroic c onsidered for a number of technological applications. While most applications require small sizes such as nanoparticles, little is known about the state of these materials when their sizes are comparable to the cycloid wavelength. This work describes a microscopic theory of cycloidal magnetism in nanoparticles based on Hamiltonian calculations. It is demonstrated that magnetic anisotropy close to the surface has a huge impact on the multiferroic ground state. For certain nanoparticle sizes the modulus of the ferromagnetic and ferroelectric moments are bistable, an effect that may be used in the design of ideal memory bits that can be switched electrically and read out magnetically.
