The Kakimizu complex is usually defined in the context of knots, where it is known to be quasi-Euclidean. We here generalize the definition of the Kakimizu complex to surfaces and 3-manifolds (with or without boundary). Interestingly, in the setting of surfaces, the complexes and the techniques turn out to replicate those used to study the Torelli group, {it i.e.,} the nonlinear subgroup of the mapping class group. Our main results are that the Kakimizu complexes of a surface are contractible and that they need not be quasi-Euclidean. It follows that there exist (product) $3$-manifolds whose Kakimizu complexes are not quasi-Euclidean.

In 1992, Osamu Kakimizu defined a complex that has become known as the Kakimizu complex of a knot. Vertices correspond to isotopy classes of minimal genus Seifert surfaces of the knot. Higher dimensional simplices correspond to collections of such cl asses of Seifert surfaces that admit disjoint representatives. We show that this complex is simply connected.
Kakimizu complex of a knot is a flag simplicial complex whose vertices correspond to minimal genus Seifert surfaces and edges to disjoint pairs of such surfaces. We discuss a general setting in which one can define a similar complex. We prove that th is complex is contractible, which was conjectured by Kakimizu. More generally, the fixed-point set (in the Kakimizu complex) for any subgroup of an appropriate mapping class group is contractible or empty. Moreover, we prove that this fixed-point set is non-empty for finite subgroups, which implies the existence of symmetric Seifert surfaces.

We define the surface complex for $3$-manifolds and embark on a case study in the arena of Seifert fibered spaces. The base orbifold of a Seifert fibered space captures some of the topology of the Seifert fibered space, so, not surprisingly, the surf ace complex of a Seifert fibered space always contains a subcomplex isomorphic to the curve complex of the base orbifold.
Aramayona and Leininger have provided a finite rigid subset $mathfrak{X}(Sigma)$ of the curve complex $mathscr{C}(Sigma)$ of a surface $Sigma = Sigma^n_g$, characterized by the fact that any simplicial injection $mathfrak{X}(Sigma) to mathscr{C}(Sigm a)$ is induced by a unique element of the mapping class group $mathrm{Mod}(Sigma)$. In this paper we prove that, in the case of the sphere with $ngeq 5$ marked points, the reduced homology class of the finite rigid set of Aramayona and Leininger is a $mathrm{Mod}(Sigma)$-module generator for the reduced homology of the curve complex $mathscr{C}(Sigma)$, answering in the affirmative a question posed by Aramayona and Leininger. For the surface $Sigma = Sigma_g^n$ with $ggeq 3$ and $nin {0,1}$ we find that the finite rigid set $mathfrak{X}(Sigma)$ of Aramayona and Leininger contains a proper subcomplex $X(Sigma)$ whose reduced homology class is a $mathrm{Mod}(Sigma)$-module generator for the reduced homology of $mathscr{C}(Sigma)$ but which is not itself rigid.
The Nielsen Realization problem asks when the group homomorphism from Diff(M) to pi_0 Diff(M) admits a section. For M a closed surface, Kerckhoff proved that a section exists over any finite subgroup, but Morita proved that if the genus is large enou gh then no section exists over the entire mapping class group. We prove the first nonexistence theorem of this type in dimension 4: if M is a smooth closed oriented 4-manifold which contains a K3 surface as a connected summand then no section exists over the whole of the mapping class group. This is done by showing that certain obstructions lying in the rational cohomology of B(pi_0 Diff(M)) are nonzero. We detect these classes by showing that they are nonzero when pulled back to the moduli space of Einstein metrics on a K3 surface.
