We present a comprehensive study of the adsorption of bis(phthalocyaninato)lutetium(III) (LuPc$_2$) on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite(0001) (HOPG). The growth and self-assembly of the molecular layers as well as the electronic structure has been investigated systematically using scanning tunnelling microscopy and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular mechanics simulations. We reveal that the adsorption of LuPc$_2$ leads to the formation of a square-like close-packed structure on the almost inert surface of HOPG, which is corroborated by simulations. Moreover, we observed a parallel orientation of the LuPc$_2$ molecules in the first monolayer, whereas in subsequent layers an increasing tilt out of the surface plane was found. Tip-sample distance-dependent tunnelling spectroscopy measurements allowed us to detect a shift in the energy positions of the peaks assigned to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital toward the Fermi energy with decreasing tip-sample separation.

We revisit here how Raman spectroscopy can be used to estimate the H content in hard hydrogenated amorphous carbon layers. The H content was varied from 2 at.% to 30 at.%, using heat treatments of a a-C:H, from room temperature to 1300 K and was dete rmined independently using ion beam analysis. We examine the correlation of various Raman parameters and the consistency of their thermal evolution with thermo-desorption results. We identify a weak band at 860 cm-1 attributed to H bonded to C(sp2). We show that the HD/HG parameter (Height ratio between the D and G bands) is quasi-linear in the full range of H content and can thus be used to estimate the H content. Conversely, we show that the m/HG parameter (ratio between the photoluminescence background, m, and the height of the G band), often used to estimate the H content, should be used with care, first because it is sensitive to various photoluminescence quenching processes and second because it is not sensitive to H bonded to C(sp2).
Kerr rotation and Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) magnetometry measurements were performed on ultrathin (Ga$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$)As layers. The thinner layers (below 250 AA) exhibit magnetic properties different than those of thick er ones, associated with different microstructure, and some degree of inhomogeneity. The temperature dependence of the field-cooled-magnetization of the layers is recorded after successive low temperature annealings. While the Curie temperature of the thicker layer (250 AA) is nearly unchanged, the critical temperature of the thinner layers is enhanced by more than 23 K after two annealings. Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) experiments on similar layers show that Mn is displaced upon annealing. The results are discussed considering a possible segregation of substitutional and interstitial Mn atoms at the surface of the (Ga,Mn)As layers.
Over the past several years, the inherent scaling limitations of electron devices have fueled the exploration of high carrier mobility semiconductors as a Si replacement to further enhance the device performance. In particular, compound semiconductor s heterogeneously integrated on Si substrates have been actively studied, combining the high mobility of III-V semiconductors and the well-established, low cost processing of Si technology. This integration, however, presents significant challenges. Conventionally, heteroepitaxial growth of complex multilayers on Si has been explored. Besides complexity, high defect densities and junction leakage currents present limitations in the approach. Motivated by this challenge, here we utilize an epitaxial transfer method for the integration of ultrathin layers of single-crystalline InAs on Si/SiO2 substrates. As a parallel to silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology14,we use the abbreviation XOI to represent our compound semiconductor-on-insulator platform. Through experiments and simulation, the electrical properties of InAs XOI transistors are explored, elucidating the critical role of quantum confinement in the transport properties of ultrathin XOI layers. Importantly, a high quality InAs/dielectric interface is obtained by the use of a novel thermally grown interfacial InAsOx layer (~1 nm thick). The fabricated FETs exhibit an impressive peak transconductance of ~1.6 mS/{mu}m at VDS=0.5V with ON/OFF current ratio of greater than 10,000 and a subthreshold swing of 107-150 mV/decade for a channel length of ~0.5 {mu}m.
Graphite is the most widely used and among the most widely-studied anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. With increasing demands on lithium batteries to operate at lower temperatures and higher currents, it is crucial to understand lithium inter calation in graphite due to issues associated with lithium plating. Lithium intercalation into graphite has been extensively studied theoretically using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, complemented by experimental studies through X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, optical imaging and other techniques. In this work, we present a first principles based model using DFT calculations, employing the BEEF-vdW as the exchange correlation functional, and Ising model to determine the phase transformations and subsequently, the thermodynamic intercalation potential diagram. We explore a configurational phase space of about 1 billion structures by accurately determining the important interactions for the Ising model. The BEEF-vdW exchange correlation functional employed accurately captures a range of interactions including vdW, covalent and ionic interactions. We incorporate phonon contributions at finite temperatures and configurational entropy to get high accuracy in free energy and potentials. We utilize the built-in error estimation capabilities of the BEEF-vdW exchange correlation functional and to develop a methodological framework for determining the uncertainty associated with DFT calculated phase diagrams and intercalation potentials. The framework also determines the confidence of each predicted stable phase. The confidence value of a phase can help us to identify regions of solid solutions and phase transformations accurately.
In this work, we report our results on the geometric and electronic properties of hybrid graphite-like structure made up of silicene and boron nitride (BN) layers. We predict from our calculations that this hybrid bulk system, with alternate layers o f honeycomb silicene and BN, possesses physical properties similar to those of bulk graphite. We observe that there exists a weak van der Waals interaction between the layers of this hybrid system in contrast to the strong inter-layer covalent bonds present in multi-layers of silicene. Furthermore, our results for the electronic band structure and the density of states show that it is a semi-metal and the dispersion around the Fermi level (E_F) is parabolic in nature and thus the charge carriers in this system behave as textit{Nearly-Free Particle-Like}. These results indicate that the electronic properties of the hybrid bulk system resemble closely those of bulk graphite. Around E_F the electronic band structures have contributions only from silicene layers and the BN layer act only as a buffer layer in this hybrid system since it does not contribute to the electronic properties near E_F. In case of bi-layers of silicene with a single BN layer kept in between, we observe a linear dispersion around E_F similar to that of graphene. However, the characteristic linear dispersion become parabola-like when the system is subjected to a compression along the transverse direction. Our present calculations show that the hybrid system based on silicon and BN can be a possible candidate for two dimensional layered system akin to graphite and multi-layers of graphene.
