The idea that a quantum magnet could act like a liquid crystal, breaking spin-rotation symmetry without breaking time-reversal symmetry, holds an abiding fascination. However, the very fact that spin nematic states do not break time-reversal symmetry renders them invisible to the most common probes of magnetism - they do not exhibit magnetic Bragg peaks, a static splitting of lines in NMR spectra, or oscillations in muSR. Nonetheless, as a consequence of breaking spin-rotation symmetry, spin-nematic states do possess a characteristic spectrum of dispersing excitations which could be observed in experiment. With this in mind, we develop a symmetry-based description of long-wavelength excitations in a spin-nematic state, based on an SU(3) generalisation of the quantum non-linear sigma model. We use this field theory to make explicit predictions for inelastic neutron scattering, and argue that the wave-like excitations it predicts could be used to identify the symmetries broken by the otherwise unseen spin-nematic order.

Recent work has highlighted remarkable effects of classical thermal fluctuations in the dipolar spin ice compounds, such as artificial magnetostatics, manifesting as Coulombic power-law spin correlations and particles behaving as diffusive magnetic m onopoles. In this paper, we address quantum spin ice, giving a unifying framework for the study of magnetism of a large class of magnetic compounds with the pyrochlore structure, and in particular discuss Yb2Ti2O7 and extract its full set of Hamiltonian parameters from high field inelastic neutron scattering experiments. We show that fluctuations in Yb2Ti2O7 are strong, and that the Hamiltonian may support a Coulombic Quantum Spin Liquid ground state in low field and host an unusual quantum critical point at larger fields. This appears consistent with puzzling features in prior experiments on Yb2Ti2O7. Thus Yb2Ti2O7 is the first quantum spin liquid candidate in which the Hamiltonian is quantitatively known.
In this study, we examine the thermodynamics and spin dynamics of spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 heptamers. Through an exact diagonalization of the isotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian, we find the closed-form, analytical representations for thermodynamic propert ies, spin excitations, and neutron scattering structure factors. Furthermore, we investigate the {cluster-like excitations of quantum spin heptamer} in the three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice material MgCr$_2$O$_4$. Using a spin mapping of the spin-1/2 heptamer excitations, the calculated structure factors of the spin-3/2 heptamer are be determined, which provides clarification for the spin excitations in MgCr$_2$O$_4$. Overall, this study demonstrates the ability to use the spin mapping of structure factors for small spin systems to analyze more complex structures.
We report a neutron scattering study of the spin-1/2 alternating bond antiferromagnet Cu(NO_3)_2. 2.5D_2O for 0.06<k_BT/J_1<1.5. For k_BT/J_1 << 1 the excitation spectrum is dominated by a coherent singlet-triplet mode centered at J_1=0.442(2) meV wi th sinusoidal dispersion and a bandwidth of J_2=0.106(2) meV. A complete description of the zero temperature contribution to the scattering function from this mode is provided by the Single Mode Approximation. At finite temperatures we observe exponentially activated band narrowing and damping. The relaxation rate is thermally activated and wave vector dependent with the period icity of the reciprocal lattice.

Despite possessing a local spin $2$ moment on the iron site and a Curie-Weiss temperature of $45K$, the A site spinel FeSc$_2$S$_4$ does not magnetically order down to 50mK. Previous theoretical work by Chen and Balents advanced an explanation for th is observation in the form of the $J_2$-$lambda$ model which places FeSc$_2$S$_4$ close to a quantum critical point on the disordered side of a quantum phase transition between a N{e}el ordered phase and a Spin-Orbital Liquid in which spins and orbitals are entangled, quenching the magnetization. We present new theoretical studies of the optical properties of the $J_2$-$lambda$ model, including a computation of the dispersion relation for the quasiparticle excitations and the form of the collective response to electric field. We argue that the latter directly probes a low energy excitation continuum characteristic of quantum criticality, and that our results reinforce the consistency of this model with experiment.
The spin-nematic state has proved elusive, due to the difficulty of observing the order parameter in experiment. In this article we develop a theory of spin excitations in a field-induced spin-nematic state, and use it to show how a spin-nematic orde r can be indentified using inelastic neutron scattering. We concentrate on 2-dimensional frustrated ferromagnets, for which a two-sublattice, bond-centered spin-nematic state is predicted to exist over a wide range of parameters. First, to clarify the nature of spin-excitations, we introduce a soluble spin-1 model, and use this to derive a continuum field theory, applicable to any two-sublattice spin-nematic state. We then parameterise this field theory, using diagrammatic calculations for a realistic microscopic model of a spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnet, and show how it can be used to make predictions for inelastic neutron scattering. As an example, we show quantitative predictions for inelastic scattering of neutrons from BaCdVO(PO_4)_2, a promising candidate to realise a spin-nematic state at an achievable hsim 4T. We show that in this material it is realistic to expect a ghostly Goldstone mode, signalling spin-nematic order, to be visible in experiment.
