Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy ferromagnetic/ superconducting (FM/SC) bilayers with a labyrinth domain structure are used to study nucleation of superconductivity on a fractal network, tunable through magnetic history. As clusters of reversed domains appear in the FM layer, the SC film shows a percolative behavior that depends on two independent processes: the arrangement of initial reversed domains and the fractal geometry of expanding clusters. For a full labyrinth structure, the behavior of the upper critical field is typical of confined superconductivity on a fractal network.

We analyze recent data on the complex inductance of dc SQUIDs that show 1/f inductance noise highly correlated with conventional 1/f flux noise. We argue that these data imply a formation of long range order in fractal spin structures. We show that t hese structures appear naturally in a random system of spins with wide distribution of spin-spin interactions. We perform numerical simulations on the simplest model of this type and show that it exhibits $1/f^{1+zeta}$ magnetization noise with small exponent $zeta$ and reproduces the correlated behavior observed experimentally.
Nonlinear I-V characteristics have been observed in insulating quench-condensed films which are locally superconducting. We suggest an interpretation in terms of the enhancement of conduction by the depinning of a Cooper pair charge density wave, Coo per pair crystal, or Cooper pair glass that may characterize the insulating regime of locally superconducting films. We propose that this is a more likely description than the Coulomb blockade or charge-anticharge unbinding phenomena.
When a magnetic field is applied, the mixed state of a conventional Type II superconductor gets destroyed at the upper critical field Hc2, where the normal vortex cores overlap with each other. Here, we show that in the presence weak and homogeneous disorder the destruction of superconductivity with field follows a different route. Starting with a weakly disordered NbN thin film ( Tc ~ 9K ), we show that under the application of magnetic field the superconducting state becomes increasingly granular, where lines of vortices separate the superconducting islands. Consequently, phase fluctuations between these islands give rise to a field induced pseudogap phase, which has a gap in the electronic density of states but where the global zero resistance state is destroyed.
Within the Ginzburg-Landau model we study the critical field and temperature enhancement for crossing superconducting channels formed either along the sample edges or domain walls in thin-film magnetically coupled superconducting - ferromagnetic bila yers. The corresponding Cooper pair wave function can be viewed as a hybridization of two order parameter (OP) modes propagating along the boundaries and/or domain walls. Different momenta of hybridized OP modes result in the formation of vortex chains outgoing from the crossing point of these channels. Near this crossing point the wave functions of the modes merge giving rise to the increase in the critical temperature for a localized superconducting state. The origin of this critical temperature enhancement caused by the wave function squeezing is illustrated for a limiting case of approaching parallel boundaries and/or domain walls. Using both the variational method and numerical simulations we have studied the critical temperature dependence and OP structure vs the applied magnetic field and the angle between the crossing channels.
Magnetoconductance (MC) in a parallel magnetic field B has been measured in a two-dimensional electron system in Si, in the regime where the conductivity decreases as sigma (n_s,T,B=0)=sigma (n_s,T=0) + A(n_s)T^2 (n_s -- carrier density) to a non-zer o value as temperature T->0. Very near the B=0 metal-insulator transition, there is a large initial drop in sigma with increasing B, followed by a much weaker sigma (B). At higher n_s, the initial drop of MC is less pronounced.
