We investigate a two-component, cylindrical, quasi-one-dimensional quantum plasma subjected to a {em radial} confining harmonic potential and an applied magnetic field in the symmetric gauge. It is demonstrated that such a system as can be realized in semiconducting quantum wires offers an excellent medium for observing the quantum pinch effect at low temperatures. An exact analytical solution of the problem allows us to make significant observations: surprisingly, in contrast to the classical pinch effect, the particle density as well as the current density display a {em determinable} maximum before attaining a minimum at the surface of the quantum wire. The effect will persist as long as the equilibrium pair density is sustained. Therefore, the technological promise that emerges is the route to the precise electronic devices that will control the particle beams at the nanoscale.

Those who measure success with culmination do not seem to be aware that life is a journey not a destination. This spirit is best reflected in the unceasing failures in efforts for solving the problem of controlled thermonuclear fusion for even the si mplest pinches for over decades; and the nature keeps us challenging with examples. However, these efforts have permitted researchers the obtention of a dense plasma with a lifetime that, albeit short, is sufficient to study the physics of the pinch effect, to create methods of plasma diagnostics, and to develop a modern theory of plasma processes. Most importantly, they have impregnated the solid state plasmas, particularly the electron-hole plasmas in semiconductors, which do not suffer from the issues related with the confinement and which have demonstrated their potential not only for the fundamental physics but also for the device physics. Here, we report on a two-component, cylindrical, quasi-one-dimensional quantum plasma subjected to a {em radial} confining harmonic potential and an applied magnetic field in the symmetric gauge. We study a shot noise of a wide channel gated high-frequency transistor at temperature of 4.2K near pinch-off. In this regime, a transition from the metallic to the insulating state is expected to occur, accompanied by the increase of the partition n oise. The dependence of the noise spectral density on current is found to be slightly nonlinear. At low currents, the differential Fano factor is enhanced compared to the universal value 1/3 for metallic diffusive conductors. We explain this result by the effect of thermal fluctuations in a nonlinear regime near pinch-off, without calling for the enhanced partition noise.

We numerically study the quantum Hall effect (QHE) in bilayer graphene based on tight-binding model in the presence of disorder. Two distinct QHE regimes are identified in the full energy band separated by a critical region with non-quantized Hall Ef fect. The Hall conductivity around the band center (Dirac point) shows an anomalous quantization proportional to the valley degeneracy, but the $ u=0$ plateau is markedly absent, which is in agreement with experimental observation. In the presence of disorder, the Hall plateaus can be destroyed through the float-up of extended levels toward the band center and higher plateaus disappear first. The central two plateaus around the band center are most robust against disorder scattering, which is separated by a small critical region in between near the Dirac point. The longitudinal conductance around the Dirac point is shown to be nearly a constant in a range of disorder strength, till the last two QHE plateaus completely collapse.
Magnetoresistance measurements have been performed on a gated two-dimensional electron system (2DES) separated by a thin barrier layer from a layer of InAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs). Clear features of the quantum Hall effect were observed des pite the proximity of the QDs layer to the 2DES. However, the magnetoresistance ($rho_{xx}$) and Hall resistance ($rho_{xy}$) are suppressed significantly in the magnetic field range of filling factor $ u<1$ when a positive voltage is applied to the front gate. The influence of the charge state in QDs was observed on the transport properties of the nearby 2DES only in the field range of $ u < 1$. It is proposed that the anomalous suppression of $rho_{xx}$ and $rho_{xy}$ is related to spin excitation, which is induced by spin-flip processes involving electrons in the QDs and the 2DES.

We study the spectral properties of infinite rectangular quantum graphs in the presence of a magnetic field. We study how these properties are affected when three-dimensionality is considered, in particular, the chaological properties. We then establ ish the quantization of the Hall transverse conductivity for these systems. This quantization is obtained by relating the transverse conductivity to topological invariants. The different integer values of the Hall conductivity are explicitly computed for an anisotropic diffusion system which leads to fractal phase diagrams.
