The history and phenomenology of hadronic parity nonconservation (PNC) is reviewed. We discuss the current status of the experimental tests and theory. We describe a re-analysis of the asymmetry for polarized proton-proton scattering that, when combined with other experimental constraints and with a recent lattice QCD calculation of the weak pion-nucleon coupling, reveals a much more consistent pattern of PNC couplings. In particular, isoscalar coupling strengths are similar to but somewhat larger than the best value estimate of Donoghue, Desplanques, and Holstein, while both lattice QCD and experiment indicate a suppressed parity-nonconserving pion-nucleon coupling. We discuss the relationship between meson-exchange models of hadronic PNC and formulations based on effective theory, stressing their general compatibility as well as the challenge presented to theory by experiment, as several of the most precise measurements involve significant momentum scales. Future directions are proposed.

Microscopic transport approaches are the tool to describe the non-equilibrium evolution in low energy collisions as well as in the late dilute stages of high-energy collisions. Here, a newly developed hadronic transport approach, SMASH (Simulating Ma ny Accelerated Strongly-interacting Hadrons) is introduced. The overall bulk dynamics in low energy heavy ion collisions is shown including the excitation function of elliptic flow employing several equations of state. The implications of this new approach for dilepton production are discussed and preliminary results for afterburner calculations at the highest RHIC energy are presented and compared to previous UrQMD results. A detailed understanding of a hadron gas with vacuum properties is required to establish the baseline for the exploration of the transition to the quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions at high net baryon densities.

For decades the primary experimental goal in studies of hadronic parity nonconservation (PNC) has been the isolation of the isovector weak nucleon-nucleon interaction, expected to be dominated by long-range pion exchange and enhanced by the neutral c urrent. In meson-exchange descriptions this interaction together with an isoscalar interaction generated by rho and omega exchange dominate most observables. Consequently these two amplitudes have been used to compare and check the consistency of the fields experiments. Yet to date, despite sensitive searches like that performed with 18F, no evidence for isovector hadronic PNC has been found. Here we argue, based on recent large-Nc treatments and new global analyses, that the emphasis on isovector hadronic PNC was misplaced. Large-Nc provides an alternative and theoretically better motivated simplification of effective field theories (EFTs) of hadronic PNC, separating the five low-energy constants (LECs) into two of leading order (LO), and three others that are NNLO. This scheme pivots the isospin coordinates we have traditionally used, placing one dominant axis in the isoscalar plane, and a second along the isotensor direction. We show that this large-Nc LEC hierarchy accurately describes all existing data on hadronic PNC, and we discuss opportunities to further test the predicted large-Nc hierarchy of LECs, illustrating the kind of analyses experimentalists can use to better constrain the LO theory and to determine the size of NNLO corrections.
We reconsider the derivation of the nucleon-nucleon parity-violating (PV) potential within a chiral effective field theory framework. We construct the potential up to next-to-next-to-leading order by including one-pion-exchange, two-pion-exchange, co ntact, and 1/M (M being the nucleon mass) terms, and use dimensional regularization to renormalize the pion-loop corrections. A detailed analysis of the number of independent low-energy constants (LECs) entering the potential is carried out. We find that it depends on six LECs: the pion-nucleon PV coupling constant $h^1_pi$ and five parameters multiplying contact interactions. We investigate PV effects induced by this potential on several few-nucleon observables, including the $vec{p}$-$p$ longitudinal asymmetry, the neutron spin rotation in $vec{n}$-$p$ and $vec{n}$-$d$ scattering, and the longitudinal asymmetry in the $^3$He$(vec{n},p)^3$H charge-exchange reaction. An estimate for the range of values of the various LECs is provided by using available experimental data.

A significant excess of J/$psi$ yield at very low transverse momentum ($p_T < 0.3$ GeV/c) was observed by the ALICE and STAR collaborations in peripheral A+A collisions, which points to evidence of coherent photoproduction of J/$psi$ in violent hadro nic interactions. Theoretically, the photoproduction of J$/psi$ in hadronic collisions raises questions about how spectator and non-spectator nucleons participate in the coherent reaction. For the first time, we argue that the strong interactions in the overlapping region of incoming nuclei may disturb the coherent production, leaving room for different coupling assumptions. Furthermore, first considerations of the destructive interference between photoproduction on ions moving in opposite directions in hadronic heavy-ion collisions are included. This letter presents calculations of J$/psi$ production from coherent photon-nucleus ($gamma + A rightarrow text{J}/psi + A$) interactions in hadronic A+A collisions at RHIC and LHC energies with both nucleus and spectator coupling hypotheses. The coherent J/$psi$ yield as a function of centrality and differential distributions as a function of transverse momentum, azimuthal angle and rapidity in different centrality bins are shown and found to be significantly different for different coupling scenarios, calling for future experimental measurements.
Several experimental investigations have observed parity violation in nuclear systems-a consequence of the weak force between quarks. We apply the $1/N_c$ expansion of QCD to the P-violating T-conserving component of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentia l. We show there are two leading-order operators, both of which affect $vec{p}p$ scattering at order $N_c$. We find an additional four operators at $O(N_c^0 sin^2 theta_W)$ and six at $O(1/N_c)$. Pion exchange in the PV NN force is suppressed by $1/N_c$ and $sin^2 theta_W$, providing a quantitative explanation for its non-observation up to this time. The large-$N_c$ hierarchy of other PV NN force mechanisms is consistent with estimates of the couplings in phenomenological models. The PV observed in $vec{p}p$ scattering data is compatible with natural values for the strong and weak coupling constants: there is no evidence of fine tuning.
