Cosmography provides a direct method to map the expansion history of the Universe in a model-independent way. Recently, different kinds of observations have been used in cosmographic analyses, such as SNe Ia and gamma ray bursts measurements, weak and strong lensing, cosmic microwave background anisotropies, etc. In this work we examine the prospects for constraining cosmographic parameters from current and future measurements of galaxy clusters distances based on their Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) and X-ray observations. By assuming the current observational error distribution, we perform Monte Carlo simulations based on a well-behaved parameterization for the deceleration parameter to generate samples with different characteristics and study the improvement on the determination of the cosmographic parameters from upcoming data. The influence of galaxy clusters (GC) morphologies on the $H_0- q_0$ plane is also investigated.

Galaxy clusters, the most massive collapsed structures, have been routinely used to determine cosmological parameters. When using clusters for cosmology, the crucial assumption is that they are relaxed. However, subarcminute resolution Sunyaev-Zeldov ich (SZ) effect images compared with high resolution X-ray images of some clusters show significant offsets between the two peaks. We have carried out self-consistent N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of merging galaxy clusters using FLASH to study these offsets quantitatively. We have found that significant displacements result between the SZ and X-ray peaks for large relative velocities for all masses used in our simulations as long as the impact parameters were about 100-250 kpc. Our results suggest that the SZ peak coincides with the peak in the pressure times the line-of-sight characteristic length and not the pressure maximum (as it would for clusters in equilibrium). The peak in the X-ray emission, as expected, coincides with the density maximum of the main cluster. As a consequence, the morphology of the SZ signal and therefore the offset between the SZ and X-ray peaks change with viewing angle. As an application, we compare the morphologies of our simulated images to observed SZ and X-ray images and mass surface densities derived from weak lensing observations of the merging galaxy cluster CL0152-1357. We find that a large relative velocity of 4800 km/s is necessary to explain these observations. We conclude that an analysis of the morphologies of multi-frequency observations of merging clusters can be used to put meaningful constraints on the initial parameters of the progenitors.
We use numerical simulations to predict the soft X-ray ([0.4-0.6] keV) and Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal (at 150 GHz) from the large scale structure in the Universe and then compute 2-point statistics to study the spatial distribution and time evolution o f the signals. The average X-ray signal predicted for the WHIM is in good agreement with observational constraints that set it at about 10% of the total Diffuse X-ray Background. The characteristic angle computed with the Autocorrelation Function is of the order of some arcminutes and becomes smaller at higher redshift. The power spectrum peak of the SZ due to the WHIM is at l~10000 and has amplitude of ~0.2 muK^2, about one order of magnitude below the signal measured with telescopes like Planck, ACT, and SPT. Even if the high-redshift WHIM signal is too weak to be detected using X-rays only, the small-scale correlation between X-ray and SZ maps is dominated by the high-redshift WHIM. This makes the analysis of the SZ signal in support of X-rays a promising tool to study the early time WHIM.
We present a new measurement of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (kSZ) using Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) and Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) data. Using the `LowZ North/South galaxy catalogue from BOSS DR12, and the gr oup catalogue from BOSS DR13, we evaluate the mean pairwise kSZ temperature associated with BOSS galaxies. We construct a `Central Galaxies Catalogue (CGC) which consists of isolated galaxies from the original BOSS data set, and apply the aperture photometry (AP) filter to suppress the primary CMB contribution. By constructing a halo model to fit the pairwise kSZ function, we constrain the mean optical depth to be $bar{tau}=(0.53pm0.32)times10^{-4}(1.65,sigma)$ for `LowZ North CGC, $bar{tau}=(0.30pm0.57)times10^{-4}(0.53,sigma)$ for `LowZ South CGC, and $bar{tau}=(0.43pm0.28)times10^{-4}(1.53,sigma)$ for `DR13 Group. In addition, we vary the radius of the AP filter and find that the AP size of $7,{rm arcmin}$ gives the maximum detection for $bar{tau}$. We also investigate the dependence of the signal with halo mass and find $bar{tau}=(0.32pm0.36)times10^{-4}(0.8,sigma)$ and $bar{tau}=(0.67pm0.46)times10^{-4}(1.4,sigma)$ for `DR13 Group with halo mass restricted to, respectively, less and greater than its median halo mass, $10^{12}, h^{-1}{rm M}_{odot}$. For the `LowZ North CGC sample restricted to $M_{rm h} gtrsim 10^{14}, h^{-1}{rm M}_odot$ there is no detection of the kSZ signal because these high mass halos are associated with the high-redshift galaxies of the LowZ North catalogue, which have limited contribution to the pairwise kSZ signals.
X-ray emission and the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich distortion to the Cosmic Microwave Background are two important handles on the gas content of the Universe. The cross-correlation between these effects eliminates noise bias and reduces observational s ystematic effects. Using analytic models for the cluster profile, we develop a halo model formalism to study this cross-correlation and apply it to forecast the signal-to-noise of upcoming measurements from eROSITA and the Simons Observatory. In the soft X-ray band (0.5--2 keV), we forecast a signal-to-noise of 174 for the cross-power spectrum. Over a wide range of the scales, the X-rays will be signal-dominated, and so sample variance is important. In particular, non-Gaussian (4-point) contributions to the errors highlight the utility of masking massive clusters. Masking clusters down to $10^{14} M_odot$ increases the signal-to-noise of the cross-spectrum to 201. We perform a Fisher Analysis on the fitting coefficients of the Battaglia et al. gas profiles and on cosmological parameters. We find that the cross spectrum is most sensitive to the overall scale of the profiles of pressure and electron density, as well as cosmological parameters $sigma_8$ and $H_0$, but that the large number of parameters form a degenerate set, which makes extracting the information more challenging. Our modeling framework is flexible, and in the future, we can easily extend it to forecast the spatial cross-correlations of surveys of X-ray lines available to high-energy-resolution microcalorimetry, to studies of the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium, and other effects.
Studying galaxy clusters through their Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) imprint on the Cosmic Microwave Background has many important advantages. The total SZ signal is an accurate and precise tracer of the total pressure in the intra-cluster medium and of clu ster mass, the key observable for using clusters as cosmological probes. Band 5 observations with SKA-MID towards cluster surveys from the next generation of X-ray telescopes such as e-ROSITA and from Euclid will provide the robust mass estimates required to exploit these samples. This will be especially important for high redshift systems, arising from the SZs unique independence to redshift. In addition, galaxy clusters are very interesting astrophysical systems in their own right, and the SKAs excellent surface brightness sensitivity down to small angular scales will allow us to explore the detailed gas physics of the intra-cluster medium.
