We demonstrate experimentally multi-bound-soliton solutions of the Nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) in the context of surface gravity waves. In particular, the Satsuma-Yajima N-soliton solution with N=2,3,4 is investigated in detail. Such solutions, also known as breathers on zero background, lead to periodic self-focussing in the wave group dynamics, and the consequent generation of a steep localized carrier wave underneath the group envelope. Our experimental results are compared with predictions from the NLS for low steepness initial conditions where wave-breaking does not occur, with very good agreement. We also show the first detailed experimental study of irreversible massive spectral broadening of the water wave spectrum, which we refer to by analogy with optics as the first controlled observation of hydrodynamic supercontinuum a process which is shown to be associated with the fission of the initial multi-soliton bound state into individual fundamental solitons similar to what has been observe in optics.

We describe a tensorial generalization of the Navier slip boundary condition and illustrate its use in solving for flows around anisotropic textured surfaces. Tensorial slip can be derived from molecular or microstructural theories or simply postulat ed as an constitutive relation, subject to certain general constraints on the interfacial mobility. The power of the tensor formalism is to capture complicated effects of surface anisotropy, while preserving a simple fluid domain. This is demonstrated by exact solutions for laminar shear flow and pressure-driven flow between parallel plates of arbitrary and different textures. From such solutions, the effects of rotating a texture follow from simple matrix algebra. Our results may be useful to extracting local slip tensors from global measurements, such as the permeability of a textured channel or the force required to move a patterned surface, in experiments or simulations.

The modulation instability (MI) is a universal mechanism that is responsible for the disintegration of weakly nonlinear narrow-banded wave fields and the emergence of localized extreme events in dispersive media. The instability dynamics is naturally triggered, when unstable energy side-bands located around the main energy peak are excited and then follow an exponential growth law. As a consequence of four wave mixing effect, these primary side-bands generate an infinite number of additional side-bands, forming a triangular side-band cascade. After saturation, it is expected that the system experiences a return to initial conditions followed by a spectral recurrence dynamics. Much complex nonlinear wave field motion is expected, when the secondary or successive side-band pair that are created are also located in the finite instability gain range around the main carrier frequency peak. This latter process is referred to as higher-order MI. We report a numerical and experimental study that confirm observation of higher-order MI dynamics in water waves. Furthermore, we show that the presence of weak dissipation may counter-intuitively enhance wave focusing in the second recurrent cycle of wave amplification. The interdisciplinary weakly nonlinear approach in addressing the evolution of unstable nonlinear waves dynamics may find significant resonance in other nonlinear dispersive media in physics, such as optics, solids, superfluids and plasma.
We report on an experimental realization of a bi-directional soliton gas in a 34~m-long wave flume in shallow water regime. We take advantage of the fission of a sinusoidal wave to inject continuously solitons that propagate along the tank, back and forth. Despite the unavoidable damping, solitons retain adiabatically their profile, while decaying. The outcome is the formation of a stationary state characterized by a dense soliton gas whose statistical properties are well described by a pure integrable dynamics. The basic ingredient in the gas, i.e. the two-soliton interaction, is studied in details and compared favourably with the analytical solutions of the Kaup-Boussinesq integrable equation. High resolution space-time measurements of the surface elevation in the wave flume provide a unique tool for studying experimentally the whole spectrum of excitations.
The journey of mammalian spermatozoa in nature is well-known to be reliant on their individual motility. Often swimming in crowded microenvironments, the progress of any single swimmer is likely dependent on their interactions with other nearby swimm ers. Whilst the complex dynamics of lone spermatozoa have been well-studied, the detailed effects of hydrodynamic interactions between neighbors remain unclear, with inherent nonlinearity in the governing hydrodynamics and potential dependence on the details of swimmer morphology. In this study we will attempt to elucidate the pairwise swimming behaviors of virtual spermatozoa, forming a computational representation of an unbound swimming pair and evaluating the details of their interactions via a high-accuracy boundary element method. We have explored extensive regions of parameter space to determine the pairwise interactions of synchronized spermatozoa, with synchronized swimmers often being noted in experimental observations, and have found that two-dimensional reduced autonomous dynamical systems capture the anisotropic nature of the swimming speed and stability arising from near-field hydrodynamic interactions. Focusing on two configurations of spermatozoa, namely those with swimmers located side-by-side or above and below one another, we have found that side-by-side cells attract each other, and the trajectories in the phase plane are well captured by a recently-proposed coarse-graining method of microswimmer dynamics via superposed regularised Stokeslets. In contrast, the above-below pair exhibit a remarkable stable pairwise swimming behavior, corresponding to a stable configuration of the plane autonomous system with swimmers lying approximately parallel to one another....
We report on a new class of electromagnetically-driven fluid interface instability. Using the optical radiation pressure of a cw laser to bend a very soft near-critical liquid-liquid interface, we show that it becomes unstable for sufficiently large beam power P, leading to the formation of a stationary beam-centered liquid micro-jet. We explore the behavior of the instability onset by tuning the interface softness with temperature and varying the size of the exciting beam. The instability mechanism is experimentally demonstrated. It simply relies on total reflection of light at the deformed interface whose condition provides the universal scaling relation for the onset Ps of the instability.
