We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements on polycrystalline LaFePO and Sr2ScO3FeP, two members of the iron phosphide families of superconductors. No evidence is found for any magnetic fluctuations in the spectrum of either material in the energy and wavevector ranges probed. Special attention is paid to the wavevector at which spin-density-wave-like fluctuations are seen in other iron-based superconductors. We estimate that the magnetic signal, if present, is at least a factor of four (Sr2ScO3FeP) or seven (LaFePO) smaller than in the related iron arsenide and chalcogenide superconductors. These results suggest that magnetic fluctuations are not as influential on the electronic properties of the iron phosphide systems as they are in other iron-based superconductors.

We consider the behaviour of the fluctuating specific heat and conductivity in the vicinity of the upper critical field line for a two-band superconductor. Multiple-band effects are pronounced when the bands have very different coherence lengths. The transition to superconductive state is mainly determined by the properties of the rigid condensate of the strong band, while the weak band with a large coherence length of the Cooper pairs causes the nonlocality in fluctuation behaviour and break down of the simple Ginzburg-Landau picture. As expected, the multiple-band electronic structure does not change the functional forms of dominating divergencies of the fluctuating corrections when the magnetic field approaches the upper critical field. The temperature dependence of the coefficients, however, is modified. The large in-plane coherence length sets the field scale at which the upper critical field has upward curvature. The amplitude of fluctuations and fluctuation width enhances at this field scale due to reduction of the effective z-axis coherence length. We also observe that the apparent transport transition displaces to lower temperatures with respect to the thermodynamic transition. Even though this effect exists already in a single-band case at sufficiently high fields, it may be strongly enhanced in multiband materials.

Multiband systems, which possess a wide parameter space, allow to explore a variety of competing ground states. Bright examples are the Fe-based pnictides and chalcogenides, which demonstrate metallic, superconducting, and various magnetic phases. He re I discuss only one of the many interesting topics, namely, spin fluctuations in metallic multiband systems. I show how to calculate the effect of itinerant spin excitations on the electronic properties and formulate a theory of spin fluctuation-induced superconductivity. The superconducting state is unconventional and thus the system demonstrates unusual spin response with the spin resonance feature. I discuss its origin, consequences, and relation to experimental observations. Role of the spin-orbit coupling is specifically emphasized.

We examine the relevance of several major material-dependent parameters to the magnetic softness in iron-base superconductors by first-principles electronic structure analysis of their parent compounds. The results are explained in the spin-fermion m odel where localized spins and orbitally degenerate itinerant electrons coexist and are coupled by Hunds rule coupling. We found that the difference in the strength of the Hunds rule coupling term is the major material-dependent microscopic parameter for determining the ground-state spin pattern. The magnetic softness in iron-based superconductors is essentially driven by the competition between the double-exchange ferromagnetism and the superexchange antiferromagnetism.
In the iron pnictide superconductors, theoretical calculations have consistently shown enhancements of the static magnetic susceptibility at both the stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) and in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) wavevectors. However, the possib le existence of FM fluctuations has not yet been examined from a microscopic point of view. Here, using $^{75}$As NMR data, we provide clear evidence for the existence of FM spin correlations in both the hole- and electron-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ families of iron-pnictide superconductors. These FM fluctuations appear to compete with superconductivity and are thus a crucial ingredient to understanding the variability of $T_{rm c}$ and the shape of the superconducting dome in these and other iron-pnictide families.

Based on an effective two-band model and using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approach, we explore spin fluctuations and unconventional superconducting pairing in Fe-based layer superconductors. It is elaborated that one type of interband antiferrom agnetic (AF) spin fluctuation stems from the interband Coulomb repulsion, while the other type of intraband AF spin fluctuation originates from the intraband Coulomb repulsion. Due to the Fermi-surface topology, a spin-singlet extended s-wave superconducting state is more favorable than the nodal $d_{XY}$-wave state if the interband AF spin fluctuation is more significant than the intraband one, otherwise vice versa. It is also revealed that the effective interband coupling plays an important role in the intraband pairings, which is a distinct feature of the present two-band system.
