By a well known result the treewidth of k-outerplanar graphs is at most 3k-1. This paper gives, besides a rigorous proof of this fact, an algorithmic implementation of the proof, i.e. it is shown that, given a k-outerplanar graph G, a tree decomposition of G of width at most 3k-1 can be found in O(kn) time and space. Similarly, a branch decomposition of a k-outerplanar graph of width at most 2k+1 can be also obtained in O(kn) time, the algorithm for which is also analyzed.

A natural way of increasing our understanding of NP-complete graph problems is to restrict the input to a special graph class. Classes of $H$-free graphs, that is, graphs that do not contain some graph $H$ as an induced subgraph, have proven to be an ideal testbed for such a complexity study. However, if the forbidden graph $H$ contains a cycle or claw, then these problems often stay NP-complete. A recent complexity study on the $k$-Colouring problem shows that we may still obtain tractable results if we also bound the diameter of the $H$-free input graph. We continue this line of research by initiating a complexity study on the impact of bounding the diameter for a variety of classical vertex partitioning problems restricted to $H$-free graphs. We prove that bounding the diameter does not help for Independent Set, but leads to new tractable cases for problems closely related to 3-Colouring. That is, we show that Near-Bipartiteness, Independent Feedback Vertex Set, Independent Odd Cycle Transversal, Acyclic 3-Colouring and Star 3-Colouring are all polynomial-time solvable for chair-free graphs of bounded diameter. To obtain these results we exploit a new structural property of 3-colourable chair-free graphs.
We initiate the study of a new parameterization of graph problems. In a multiple interval representation of a graph, each vertex is associated to at least one interval of the real line, with an edge between two vertices if and only if an interval ass ociated to one vertex has a nonempty intersection with an interval associated to the other vertex. A graph on n vertices is a k-gap interval graph if it has a multiple interval representation with at most n+k intervals in total. In order to scale up the nice algorithmic properties of interval graphs (where k=0), we parameterize graph problems by k, and find FPT algorithms for several problems, including Feedback Vertex Set, Dominating Set, Independent Set, Clique, Clique Cover, and Multiple Interval Transversal. The Coloring problem turns out to be W[1]-hard and we design an XP algorithm for the recognition problem.

k-means is a widely used clustering algorithm, but for $k$ clusters and a dataset size of $N$, each iteration of Lloyds algorithm costs $O(kN)$ time. Although there are existing techniques to accelerate single Lloyd iterations, none of these are tail ored to the case of large $k$, which is increasingly common as dataset sizes grow. We propose a dual-tree algorithm that gives the exact same results as standard $k$-means; when using cover trees, we use adaptive analysis techniques to, under some assumptions, bound the single-iteration runtime of the algorithm as $O(N + k log k)$. To our knowledge these are the first sub-$O(kN)$ bounds for exact Lloyd iterations. We then show that this theoretically favorable algorithm performs competitively in practice, especially for large $N$ and $k$ in low dimensions. Further, the algorithm is tree-independent, so any type of tree may be used.
A bipartite graph $G=(A,B,E)$ is ${cal H}$-convex, for some family of graphs ${cal H}$, if there exists a graph $Hin {cal H}$ with $V(H)=A$ such that the set of neighbours in $A$ of each $bin B$ induces a connected subgraph of $H$. Many $mathsf{NP}$- complete problems, including problems such as Dominating Set, Feedback Vertex Set, Induced Matching and List $k$-Colouring, become polynomial-time solvable for ${mathcal H}$-convex graphs when ${mathcal H}$ is the set of paths. In this case, the class of ${mathcal H}$-convex graphs is known as the class of convex graphs. The underlying reason is that the class of convex graphs has bounded mim-width. We extend the latter result to families of ${mathcal H}$-convex graphs where (i) ${mathcal H}$ is the set of cycles, or (ii) ${mathcal H}$ is the set of trees with bounded maximum degree and a bounded number of vertices of degree at least $3$. As a consequence, we can re-prove and strengthen a large number of results on generalized convex graphs known in the literature. To complement result (ii), we show that the mim-width of ${mathcal H}$-convex graphs is unbounded if ${mathcal H}$ is the set of trees with arbitrarily large maximum degree or an arbitrarily large number of vertices of degree at least $3$. In this way we are able to determine complexity dichotomies for the aforementioned graph problems. Afterwards we perform a more refined width-parameter analysis, which shows even more clearly which width parameters are bounded for classes of ${cal H}$-convex graphs.
Computing cohesive subgraphs is a central problem in graph theory. While many formulations of cohesive subgraphs lead to NP-hard problems, finding a densest subgraph can be done in polynomial time. As such, the densest subgraph model has emerged as t he most popular notion of cohesiveness. Recently, the data mining community has started looking into the problem of computing k densest subgraphs in a given graph, rather than one, with various restrictions on the possible overlap between the subgraphs. However, there seems to be very little known on this important and natural generalization from a theoretical perspective. In this paper we hope to remedy this situation by analyzing three natural variants of the k densest subgraphs problem. Each variant differs depending on the amount of overlap that is allowed between the subgraphs. In one extreme, when no overlap is allowed, we prove that the problem is NP-hard for k >= 3. On the other extreme, when overlap is allowed without any restrictions and the solution subgraphs only have to be distinct, we show that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to k, and admits a PTAS for constant k. Finally, when a limited of overlap is allowed between the subgraphs, we prove that the problem is NP-hard for k = 2.
